The guy on the right makes dance music now. DJ Mighty Mi is his name. I worked on a few things for him (mixing/mastering), but we are huge creative mismatches, so it doesn't appear there will be more work coming.

I didn't know that's who he was until after I had done some work for him. B-Boy Document '99 is a classic hip hop song for me. None of his stuff even sounds remotely like that anymore.

Yeah I know who they are. Was just posting some Philly stuff.

That's not the version of B-Boy on the CD btw. Different intro.

My old roommates and I used to love this stuff back in the day. Hell, I still like jammin' it now sometimes.

Can you post the stuff you worked on with Mighty Mi?

The version of B-Boy Document '99 I liked was the one that was on Soundbombing. I couldn't find that version anywhere, when I did a search. The mix is right in the one I posted, though. The one you posted is definitely the right version, but that compression sounds like crap, which is why I didn't use it.

I worked on 4 things for him, but I'm really unclear about whether he used most of my work (communication was a major issue and one of my pet peeves). Two were just straight mastering, one was mixing vocals with a pre-mixed track and mastering, and one was an apparent aborted attempt at us doing a mix together (he basically wanted the mix to sound exactly like the rough, and that's not really what I do when I mix, so who knows what happened with that one?). As I said, we have totally different brains stylistically, so I don't think we'll be working together again. The only one I am about 100 percent certain is my mix/mastering is this, and I don't know how much I like it...lol:

The mastering on the other two sounds significantly lower than what I delivered, so I doubt it's mine, but it's possible someone turned it down or something. The funny thing is that he wants stuff crazy loud, I delivered that pretty decently, and it doesn't appear it's what he wanted (if he didn't go with my mastering). I don't know, the whole thing was pretty strange. Working with him was a second hand referral from the guy I really enjoy working with, who I am a really good creative partner with, and is like my brother from another mother. I'll post a couple of the things I did for him, if you're interested.

I don't think there's much point in posting the stuff I don't think was my work. I'm a post-production specialist, but I'm starting to expand into music. I'm getting better, but I still have a way to go before I start being consistently happy with what I've done. The hot mastering is really ridiculous in EDM, and I'm not comfortable mastering the way I have to for it. But, it's what they want, so I have to deal with it, to be competitive. I now have a pretty good idea of what to shoot for, without it being too hot or compressed for my taste, but I only get to do that style with one person, right now. I'm a work in progress.

Old producer looking to get back in weekend warrior style, and thought I'd pop my head in.

Recently picked up a NI Maschine last month, and some NS10's mainly because the guy was unloading them cheap locally and I always wanted a pair.

About to build a new production computer, and get a room set up sometime soon and get busy.

Started with classical piano as a 5yo, taught by my mother who has been a performer for many years.
Took up guitar at 12.
Tertiary trained in Jazz and music education
Work as a school teacher and tutor guitar and piano although mainly guitar these days (and play poker).
Have played in numerous unsuccessful garage bands ranging from jazz to metal and everything inbetween usually on guitar, sometimes vocals. Have had some success with session and sideman gigs and playing terrible music for some Australian TV shows. Used to have a semi-decent Youtube following, have taken it all down due to stalker issues a couple of years ago.

Currently trying to figure out if I'm a musician, teacher or poker player.

Howdy musicians. I'm here to join the party.

In my first go around with college I was a music major. I studied voice, piano, composition, and guitar. Unfortunately, I did not have the appropriate background and preliminary training. I advanced quickly in piano and guitar thanks to lessons when I was younger and once in college practicing each instrument three hours a day, and I had no trouble with music theory, but I always struggled in the ear training labs. In the labs, the professor would play an opening chord, then we would have to notate the rest of the song according to what we heard him play. If we were lucky, he would tell us the opening chord and what key he was playing in. I remember this young guy who'd hum solfège under his breath to get the progressions right(this was strictly forbidden, but I don't blame him!).

Even though I switched majors, I kept up playing piano, guitar, and voice for years afterwards. I was determined to continue seriously developing my playing ability so continued practicing three hours on each instrument every day. But this was unsustainable. I was also heavily committed to developing my writing career, and I had to make a choice. At the time, I didn't think it was right to do anything just for fun, so I made the tough choice and quit music completely. I only recently have returned to singing and am having a blast. I haven't touched a piano or guitar now in almost a decade. Lately, though, I think about getting back into piano or guitar. It'd be great to play and practice for fun, without holding myself to such an LOL standard as 6-9 hours of practice a day.

I did a bunch of different things. Worked at cafes, restaurants, credit card customer service, retail management, then went back to school and transitioned into a career in publishing. Now I work with a university and edit books for some small publishers. Hoping to start a Ph.D. program next fall, just waiting for the acceptance letters.

So, yeah, my life basically has nothing to do with music now except for recreation. I like it much more this way.

What about you, RW? What's your music background?

My fingers hurt from playing "Gimme Three Steps" by Skynyrd all week and I can't get the ****ing song out of my head for days.

There's only a few songs that I know all the way through. I usually warm up with "Down South Jukin" then either turn on the distortion and play some Pantera (poorly) or Ozzy (poorly) or whatever random crap pops into my head like .... ooo how bout "Black Sunshine" by White Zombie! **** yeah. It's either that or I go on a Skynyrd kick. My favorites are "I Ain't the One" "Curtis Loewe" "Sweet Home Alababma" "Tuesday's Gone" and the most recent butchering "Gimme Three Steps."
