The historical, and insightful value of music. The historical, and insightful value of music.

I've been writing music since I was around 14 years old, and an early habit I developed was to record everything I came up with, that way I wouldn't forget anything. I cannot think of a much greater tragedy than a great song being lost and forgotten. There's no telling what sort of amazing music we have never been able to hear because it's been lost and forgotten.

Recently, I've been going through a bunch of old stuff I've written and recorded, and it is so interesting to go back and look through stuff I wrote in journals during the time, and songs that are my standards now, I come across little snippets on old pieces of paper that started it all. During a period from around 2002 to 2008 or so, I was severely depressed, and at times, very suicidal. I wrote a suicide note, and a will, in a journal that I wrote in. I was looking through page after page of really tremendous pain, and it greatly reflected in the songs that I wrote during that time. It is very interesting how music can give you an insight into the emotions and experiences that people go through during their lives. It's personally enlightening and rewarding having a historic record of experiences you have had, and emotions you have felt that inspired music you wrote. I think music is an incredible historic record, and it's one that anyone can contribute to, and people should do so, and record it for preservation.
