guitar pups and coil taps

edit: i am confusing coil split / coil tap ITT and using them interchangeably. so oops my b

i have been looking like hell lately for a deluxe tele style guitar that has 2 humbuckers, both with coil split. i don't know if anyone makes this kind of thing stock - i get the impression that adding a coil split is pretty easy, but have never done it myself. i would probably settle for a humbucker + coil split in the neck and a standard tele bridge pup. i would rather a blend pot than a switch.

i own a peavey mystic which is like a couple peavey guitars / basses of the era in that the tone knob functions as a coil tap. tone on 10 = single coil, anything under 7 and it's a humbucker getting progressively darker. this is a pretty cool idea but the pups on the mystic don't sound that great so it's kind of a waste. i bought it because a T-40 has basically the same arrangement on a bass and it sounds ****ing awesome, but was disappointed.

one thing that i have not seen much discussion around is which humbuckers sound best with a coil tap. i really like the super clear, glassy neck pickup sound of a classic tele. i'd like to be able to dial up all the typical tele sounds while also blending in the second coil when needed. anyone have any recs in this area?

so, please enlighten me re:
1. stock guitars that make good use of this feature
2. humbuckers which sound great with a coil tap
3. whether you prefer a switch, pot, or even BOTH?? and what is your ideal setup for making use of a coil tap.

i've also dreamed of a H/S/H strat with two coil taps as well as the fat strat pickup switch added. don't even know if you could route the whole thing on a standard body.

Re: guitar pups and coil taps

As far as strats with coil-splitting goes, you might take a look at the Billy Corgan Signature Stratocaster. It uses 3 humbuckers, positions 1, 3, and 5 utilize one at a time as usual. Positions 2 and 4 use the middle humbucker but split the neck or bridge pickup. Billy didn't necessarily design this guitar to emulate his old sounds, but to be a versatile workingman's setup.

I really like the way it looks too with the very light colored neck and fat 70's headstock. Would love to have a white one and just swap out the black pickguard for a white pearloid.

It's out of production now but it looks like a few stores still have some new stoock to sell through.

Here's a decent demo:

I wish I could give a good answer but I don't coil tap anything. When I need variety I just build a new guitar.

Re: guitar pups and coil taps

i just learned that the new epi les paul standard comes with a double coil split. never been an LP guy but i might check one out.

the G&L has a single coil split / master volume, which is weird, and not what i want. LOL at the guy in the corgan video at 2:55 saying "and here's a modern mid-rangey gain that you can only get on this guitar!" and proceeds to play a riff that sounds like muddy dog ****. the other pickups sound pretty good though, but i can't see spending that much on a guitar right now.

i'm thinking i will probably buy one of the blacktop teles or a frankentele when i get a chance and have somebody drop in a coil split, with our without a new set of pups... also considering getting a set of these

and dropping them into one of my cheap strats to see what happens.
