Question about the spades scene in rounders Question about the spades scene in rounders

One thing I've always wondered about is the scene in the beginning where they're playing spades (I assume it's spades) in the jail and the guy gets furious at worm for playing the queen of spades.

What's so special about the queen of spades in that game? If you're going to trump somebody wouldn't you trump them with the ace?

And how does it help worm if someone else shoots the moon? Doesn't he get 26 points or whatever it is just like everyone else who didn't shoot it?

When I first started college my buddies and I played a game that I *thought* was called spades where you could throw away cards in the beginning but couldn't throw away spades that represented points. Is that a different variation?

Hearts. The game is hearts and the Queen of spades counts for 13 points so it is to be avoided unless you are shooting the moon (going for all points). If you have a big enough lead letting someone else to shoot the moon can cause you to win.

Also it's Worm who shot the moon, it wasn't one of the other guys.

Dude is bitching saying it's the 3rd time Worm has given him the Queen of Spades (which you very much do not want unless you're shooting the moon,) and Worm argues back pointing out last hand (there are many hands played in a single match of Hearts,) another one of the guys was left with the Queen and the hand before that he(Worm,) was left with it.

Dude bitching about getting it three times then says to Worm, 'Yeah, but you shot the moon on that hand so it(Queen of Spades,) ended up helping you out,'

So it was Worm shooting the moon not someone else, although as Mr. Baseball pointed out it is possible to be benefited by another player shooting the moon when you are far enough ahead every one else in points.

I just re-watched it and it *was* hearts - I was misremembering. I thought the guy who says "pow" was playing the jack of spades, which got trumped by the queen of spades.

It's actually just a poorly-shot scene. A diamond is led, Worm plays the 10 of hearts and imitates a buzzer sound, then the guy says "pow" and plays a high diamond (not a high spade), then worm plays the queen of spades on him. But what they failed to show was anyone taking the previous trick - between worm playing the 10 of hearts and playing the queen someone should have taken the trick and cleared the cards from the middle.

But whatever
