I wouldnt say he is my fav musician, but his kit is pretty sick imo...plus, I thought the rule was to post a picture in an OP... so I chose that one
Saw him do a live clinic at a music shop over 10 years ago and he had a similar jungle gym type set up.

I thought the guy was kind of weird and ******ed and he played terrible emo progressive symphonic weird pieces to show off his drumming....like anyone in the crowd owns a freaking kit like that.

Then he did some drumming on a Beck album I really dug and he regained some respect as I learned more about him.

Obviously the guy is a sick talented drum hero, but was just really kind of a weird clinic/performance and guy.

So bizarre to me how little most people know about percussion. And kinda sickens me how gullible most people that watched "Drumline" were

We need to get this OP itt!

I agree with your assessment of him. I should probably have a mod take that picture out of the op and replace it with a different one.

Suggestions anyone?

I was recently reminded of this video. Until I saw this video i believed that rudimental snare drumming represented the epitome of rhythmic complexity and speed. I had failed to consider what people are capable of when utilizing ten striking implements.

That video is crazy. I never considered the thought of using all ten like that.

The thing about this video that is amazing to me is the amount of clarity in his rhythms, despite the crazy fast speed. He is getting a very consistent sound quality and volume out of every finger strike during those rolls.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post it here or not, but I run a drumming website and am currently being pretty active with producing educational drumming YouTube videos. PM me if you are interested in checking them out.

Do you need any help creating/producing them? I obv know the website (from our PM convo), and would love to get involved. I feel like I have pretty good hands, and I have access to HEEEEAPS of instruments as well as video/audio equipment.

Studying with Tim Adams definitely has its perks. He basically tells the school of music "hey I wanna buy this and this and this" and they write a blank check.

I checked out some of your videos the other day and thought they were really well done.

Sorry, I forgot to PM you back.

These are great videos and well worth sharing with others.

So my kid wants to start playing drums. I am a guitar guy but would also like to learn a little.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Gretch Catalina Maple or Birch shell packs?

Would this be a good starter kit?

I can get a 6 piece for around $800, no cymbals.

Ideally I would like something with a little resale value if it blows up, so I want something solidly in the mid-price range and not a beginner kit. Same advice I would offer starting guitar players also. Beginner crap is throw away garbage.

The Gretch Catalina kits are pretty nice for the price.

Well worth the money imo.

You will prob end up spending a good amount on cymbals also so keep that in mind when budgeting.

Another good drumset in that price range would be the Yamaha stage custom.

I would play on either one of those and be happy.

Good choice skipping the beginner stufff!

Also, get him into lesson

Edit: Shell pack means drums only. Obv no cymbals but also no hardware (Stands, pedal, throne). Hardware will cost you some money also seeing as tho you need it.

Thanks, yea he is going to go in for lessons. Then he can teach me.

I found the Catalina Maple kit with a Gibraltar 5600 hardware pack and throne for $999. I think I'll get that, then look for some used Zildjian A Custom hats and ride.

Are any of the cymbal packs worth getting?

I always hear that you need the best quality cymbals, which is why I'm leery about going with the Zildjian ZBT or Sabian B8 packs. I don't really want a collection of crap cymbals laying around that I can't sell.

You won't have any trouble getting rid of B8's or ZBT's after your kid is done with them. TONS of student model kits have these cymabals, so you could easily sell them to a school or music store, if not privately via CL or eBay
