The Craigslist Thread

As musicians, I'd imagine many of us spend a great deal of time in the "Musical Instruments" section of CraigsList and are familiar with the scams, deals, and outright hilarity that is found there.

Post your hilarious findings here.

Here's one I found today. I'm looking in LirvA's general direction here:

Re: The Craigslist Thread

My buddy got a 23" Meinl Byzance Ride Cymbal for $150. Retails for over $400 new, and it was literally in pristine condition. I was really sad when we moved out and I couldn't play it every day.

Re: The Craigslist Thread

Cymbals hardly ever hold their value when it comes to resale. Which is funny cuz who cares if a cymbals is used?

Nice find by your friend tho!

Re: The Craigslist Thread

Craigslist can be very frustrating I've found. I've sold several items through there, and you pretty much always have to put up with 5-10:1 scam/legit inquiries. You'll also likely have to do some driving to meet someone half way, or take your item all the way to them.

I love craigslist. I have bought tons of gear from there with very few problems.

Yea, but have you ever traded a stoner a Marshall 1/2 stack to start your grow house?

Re: The Craigslist Thread

i have done a ton of craigslist transactions, the key is not to get sucked into meeting / haggling with lunatics who aren't serious or lonely old dudes who just want to talk gear for an hour.

overall i think the best strategy is to skim frequently and look for the good deals up front - low or reasonable asking prices for nice gear - rather than constantly trying to talk down the 80% of sellers who are in la-la land with their asking prices. it's just not worth your time.

don't go to a meet or a house hoping to move somebody far off whatever price was discussed in the email. again, great way to waste a lot of time for little reward.

also, if you are semi serious about music or gear, be ready to buy something at a great price even if it's not what you're looking for right that minute. you can always flip it, and you will learn something in the process.

one of the first amps i bought off CL was a 68 bassman that i got for $125 circa 2006 or so. that was a great deal, still have that amp and love it.

you can also occasionally get some great deals on trades, but you have to wade through more insane bull**** to do it. i once turned a couple of crappy solid-state practice amps into a really nice MIJ jag bass with some patient trading and speculating.

I'd love for a tutorial about fake Les Paul's to go into this thread, but I'm not qualified.
