hhah..I was watching a Zappa interview @ youtube and he said somethin' like,"some scientists say that the major building-block of the universe is hydrogen because it's the most plentiful element, but my theory is that the universe is made out of stupidity because it is more plentiful than hydrogen."

pretty lol

I can attest to the fact that when my friends and I saw Zappa live in 1966, we weren't "posers". We felt more alive than than I've ever felt sense then.

OP, what's better: action movies or dramas? spicy food or non-spicy food? pet dogs or pet cats? whiskey or tequila? PLO or NLHE?

In accordance to your original question each of these must have a 'correct' answer (although logic would dictate that everyone might just have their own personal preferences...)

I posted that video was a response to the original post re which is better. Wasn't sure of the words I wanted to say so just put the video up for now.

What I'm getting at is that original comparison, is an interesting one, although unfair, as it's mroe about songwriting than musicianship.

Obviously Yngwie is super-talented, but personally I'm not a fan. His technical ability is something to be admired, but there's no soul and his music and playing make me feel nothing. It's all flex, and no cool.

Brown-eyed girl is a classic, it's joyously nostalgic but simple. Any beginner guitarist would be able to pick it up before too long, but does that detract from it as a song? No.

The John Butler video I posted I thinks shows what's capable when all of those things come together.

For those who haven't watched it's just a 12 minute instrumental on an acoustic guitar.

However, it shows incredible songwriting, techniqie and soul. While there are moments of flex and jawdropping technique, some of the greatest sections are incredibly simple. Getting to the whole "what you don't play" idea.

On a side-note, that song is obv very long and heavily improvised. I've heard it performed live and recorded a number of times and it's different every time. Sometimes a little angrier, sometimes very peacefully. I think John has admitted he's never played it twice the same, as it's far too heavy improv.

There needs to be a moratorium on this whole technical-ability-vs-feel argument, say for like 100 years. The arguments are all accounted for, it's been covered.

That dude ^ busted his humps as a busker in Western Australia for years before he had his success.

One of Australia's all time greats. I know that's a short list, but he's on top!

I get asked to do covers of John Butler all the time and I simply say he's just too good.

Is that a movement that worships white doves of peace or something similar?
