Jabonator

That's a lovely song, I got a feel of JS Bach from the part just before the minor chording came in (which itself was rather fine), and the latter part I could definitely feel the Mozart influence.

Please take these as compliments, I hold Bach as the absolute best

Definitely complements. Bach is the greatest when it comes to flowing melody. I believe my teacher told me to think about Bach at one point as we felt I should write one part where the left hand takes command. And just how I tried to create some of the harmonies between the hands were heavily influenced by bachs inventions.

Re: *** The Composing Thread***

Here's a couple of midi sequences I did when I was 15/16 years old.

(I just chose the first random picture to upload them with, so disregard that.)

I have a few more lying around, but it's late and uploading takes a while, so I'll start with two and maybe post more if anyone's interested.

Normally, my stuff is piano-based, so maybe I'll record something or whatever.

Nice work TTI. Would love to hear an actual live recording of the second song.

Some nice stuff ITT. Here's an idea I've been wanting to develop that I ended up forgetting about until just now when I visited my soundcloud for the first time in a few months: http://snd.sc/HvZ7sL

Unfortunately my familiarity with this type of music is probably on par with the software I used for the sounds, which is not great, so I don't really know where to go from here.

very pretty. the counterpoint in the voicings are really pretty. i think it could use a bass line of some sort to round out the sound. really slow legato strokes.

Thanks for the compliment and the suggestion. Found the track and threw together a bass line for it. My ears are tired so the levels might be off but the notes seemed to work: http://snd.sc/IlYBvk

About to start arranging some Steppenwolf for marching band. Will post updates as I go along.

How many itt have Finale/Sibelius? I would just post ****s files or something if enough people had them.

Re: *** The Composing Thread***

I just gave a couple of senior recitals for my music degree so I can finally graduate college(!). I thought I'd throw up an original tune from my group recital for you guys to check out.

I play piano on the track:

I liked it

It was really nice when the horns kicked in.

Congrats on finishing college

Re: *** The Composing Thread***

Any of you guys/gals happen to be Finale wizards? Here's my dilemma.

Writing a piece in 5/8 and have a measure that is all 16th notes. Finale is grouping the beams in groups of 2 (so that there's 5 groupings of 2 16th notes). What I want to achieve is one grouping of four 16ths and one grouping of six 16ths.

Thanks mucho to whoever can help!

Personally I can't even read music, let alone use that type of software. I just deal with midi when I write songs.

Nice work.

I sort of disagree with the guy above regarding the part where the brass kicks in though. It feels like the guitar doesn't have quite enough time in the spotlight before that part, which makes the transition a bit strange to me. Not sure whether it's mostly recording/mixing or songwriting/arrangement, but it also feels like things get a little muddy with the guitar and the piano around 1:10-1:20.

Speaking of the guitar, I obviously don't know what type of constraints you guys had when writing the song but the biggest negative for me is that the guitar doesn't get enough time in the spotlight in the early/middle parts. Having it take the leading role in the part that starts at 2:16 would break things up nicely for example.
