My band was recently recording an EP and had to do a pretty serious edit that might not even work in the song. No problem. Lets see how it sounds. So our engineer just whipped out a razor and some tape and joined it together and low and behold, sounded awesome. Was weird from a computer persons point of view.

There's some of my music lying on the floor!

Editing on tape is nowhere near as hard as both of you think it is. It's just like editing on a workstation, you just have to learn where the "cursor" is (ever used a scrub function? if so that's just mimicking twisting the reels). If a person owns an analog tape machine, it would be extremely bad if they didn't know how to edit tape, because it is impossible for that need to not arise.

Would I want to go back and edit on tape again? No. It's time consuming, and inefficient, but it really isn't that hard, and is much like any other acquired skill.

That is my 57 Reissue. Great girl.

Everything is set up in the studio and completely functional. The board, tape machine, and effects all seem to work. I've been able to get noise through the entire chain and back out again. I am certain there are easier ways for me to accomplish what I am doing. For example, I have no clue of how to use the Patch Bay. But I did lay down some test tracks and play them back. Haven't tried any dubbing, punching, bouncing, nor mixing down. Still plenty to learn.

The reel of tape that came with my equipment was bad. It suffers from what the Analog guys call "Sticky Shed". The tape disintegrates as it passes through the machine, shedding its coatings and leaving a sticky residue on the heads, guides, and rollers.

I ordered about 3 miles of fresh tape that just arrived. I know what I'm doing this weekend!

Re: The Analog Studio

Feel free to post some questions about the patch bay if you'd like. I may be able to help you out. Or PM if you prefer. Pics/model info of the patch bay would obv be useful as well.

Yeah. I'm so ignorant at this point that I don't even know the questions. I know there is such a thing as a Patch Bay - mostly because I own one. But I have no idea how to use it. I think it simplifies switching between devices, but have zero idea of how it is done.

I'll grab some info about what I have and post it.

Re: The Analog Studio

Is the manual you were searching for the one for the tascam M-2516 mixer?
I got one on the first try, seems complete, but only 48 pages long. If thatīs the one Iīll send it to you, PM

Re: The Analog Studio

At it's simplest definition, a patchbay is used to interconnect multiple device's ins and outs. So everything runs to the patchbay, than you can use patch cables to do your routing from there. There's all sorts of different kinds with different connector types.

Re: The Analog Studio

What kind of patch bay? TT? Or TRS?

I hope it's TRS, cause TT's are evil. They're the best when they're hooked up, but when you're the one who has to hook them up, they're horrible.

Re: The Analog Studio

The new tape made all of the difference. No sticky rollers. Was able to do multiple tracks and dubs. Had a minor glitch that I had to debug. Bad wiring connection. Also didn't realize exactly how the Monitor loop worked. Got that figured out now too now. Still so much to learn about how to shape the sound.

Re: The Analog Studio

Hey POR, I read an article that remind me of your analog studio shenaningans. I donīt know anything about analog, so i found the introductory part (the description of analog inserts and effects) fascinating.

http://www****sic-tech.com/headlines...._from=&ucat=1&

maybe in the chain knowledge this is like mega basics, but still i tought it was very "cleanly" explained

Really good stuff. Much appreciated. I'll need to read it a few times to really understand it.

I'm still learning the Mega Basics about how to use the gear. My initial recordings are still pretty poor at this point (my terrible playing doesn't help).

Haven't even started looking at how to get it mixed down to digital.
