I am planning to take a shot at 40/80 mix in bellagio during wsop. Please share your insight/experiences/player pool info about those mixed games which seem to run daily.

Not a regular but I'm in this room and these games a couple of times a year including WSOP. When I've seen 40 mix go it's been because the 80-160 didn't have enough players to start and some of those players got people waiting for Holdem seats to play mix with them. Didn't seem to run on its own like the stud game does. The 80-160 and higher mixes are more likely to go.

The 40 mix seemed to be a more old school mix with HORSE (Razz sometimes swapped with super Razzdugi or some equally stupid variant) plus some of the triple draw games (Badugi, Deuce, A-5, Badacey, Badeucey). The 80 mix had more super stud variants (super stud 8, super hi-lo regular) and some capped big-bet games (Big O, PLO).

The player pool for the 80 has both tougher regulars and some very gambly recreational players from my experience and identifying who is which, and which games each player makes mistakes in is probably the key skill in a mixed environment.

Thanks for the insight. Looks the games get made up based on players request.

There is a good chance you can start 20/40 or 30/60 mix at the Rio and have more of a choice of the games in the mix. That might be more of an ideal size for you based on your post. The bellagio regs are pretty obstinate about their mix

Yeah 20/40 mix at the Rio runs frequently during the WSOP. And while you can kind of choose the games if you're there for the start of the game opening, it's going to be almost always a very similar mix. All the regs choose between these same 8-10 games. And even if you managed to get a game in at the start, for example Limit Hold 'em, when other regs arrive, they'll always be like - "Wtf is this doing in the mix? Let's take it out."

I think RolldUpTrips would be most insightful for the Bellagio as he's a reg there.

I'm never at the Bell during WSOP and my understanding is that it's a fair amount different from the rest of the year, so I don't really have anything to add. Sorry :-(

The 80 or 1/2 mix ive played during wsop never had big bet and limit holdem was included a couple times, though I think they do have NLSD and Big O/PLO8 for regular game during rest of year which I've never played. Pretty sure the 40 didn't have big bet iirc. Grumpy older local reg will ensure that stud hi lo regular is in the mix lol

Not a regular either, but I think the 40 mix has a completely different player pool than the 80. The 40 is more of a conventional mix that goes in the daytime, while the 80 can be more adventurous and usually goes overnight. When I've seen the 80 go earlier, it's been started by bigger plo players waiting for their game.

This info is at least a year old, so may be completely bogus.

This. It can be difficult to believe that a player so solid in one game can be so helpless in another.

But at Rio, be prepared for poor mix dealers. Lots of misdeals, rules confusion, etc.

Yes this! It will get better towards the end but in the beginning it's a ***** show.

They're pretty bad about playing stud hi/lo no qualifier, too. Most people don't know the game so it sticks around.

I haven't played it in 2 years, but for several summers prior, I found the 40/80 mix at B to be surprisingly soft. I posted good results in that game, and--depending on the day of the week/time of day--I frequently found that the 40 mix at B was softer than the 20 mix at Rio. The mix regs at B are, on the whole, wildly uneven in terms of ability. Meanwhile, the 20 mix at Rio was always stocked with at least a few solid grinders who didn't have too many leaks or exploitable weaknesses.

Granted, the super stud variants were still new-ish to a lot of players then, and I'd be surprised if people haven't gotten at least a little better at those games over the last couple of years... GL

Very small sample size here, but I haven't seen much (any?) progress, especially among players who are fairly competent in other formats.

Word.

Actually, a friend whose judgment I trust and who just played the game texted me his same impression. He and I met playing stud at the Taj, Trop, Sands, and Bally's AC almost 20 years ago, and I'd take him as a favorite in just about any stud-variant-ring-game. So I def believe y'all.

I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised to learn that they're not improving all that much. The 3rd St play was a joke when I played it last. I remember a hand in which I capped on 3rd St, obv revealing that I had rolled up kings. I hit quads on 5th St and was 3-bet-raised. When the reraiser put in the 3-bet, he said, "I think you may have four of a kind, but I have a really good hand, so I have to get value from it." He showed the table his "bad beat" by unnecessarily turning up an A-high flush at showdown. The other player in the hand was FURIOUS because he got unnecessarily squeezed with queens-full: the flusher raised 6th AND 7th which allowed me to get in 3 big bets per St. The feeling reminded me what it was like to play 80/160 LHE at the Borg back in The Day, when no one knew how to play and life was good!

I find East Coast players to be far superior in the stud variants, generally, and West Coast players to have something of an edge in the draw games (although not as much in badacey for some reason). If I perceive a player to be a formidable opponent, I will often ask something like, "How come we've never played together before? Where are you from?" If merited, I'll adjust my play in certain games based on the answer.
