Word.
Actually, a friend whose judgment I trust and who just played the game texted me his same impression. He and I met playing stud at the Taj, Trop, Sands, and Bally's AC almost 20 years ago, and I'd take him as a favorite in just about any stud-variant-ring-game. So I def believe y'all.
I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised to learn that they're not improving all that much. The 3rd St play was a joke when I played it last. I remember a hand in which I capped on 3rd St, obv revealing that I had rolled up kings. I hit quads on 5th St and was 3-bet-raised. When the reraiser put in the 3-bet, he said, "I think you may have four of a kind, but I have a really good hand, so I have to get value from it." He showed the table his "bad beat" by unnecessarily turning up an A-high flush at showdown. The other player in the hand was FURIOUS because he got unnecessarily squeezed with queens-full: the flusher raised 6th AND 7th which allowed me to get in 3 big bets per St. The feeling reminded me what it was like to play 80/160 LHE at the Borg back in The Day, when no one knew how to play and life was good!
I find East Coast players to be far superior in the stud variants, generally, and West Coast players to have something of an edge in the draw games (although not as much in badacey for some reason). If I perceive a player to be a formidable opponent, I will often ask something like, "How come we've never played together before? Where are you from?" If merited, I'll adjust my play in certain games based on the answer.
