Mr. Perfect had a seriously ****ed up back and that whole match certainly makes the list of top 10 gutsiest wrestling performances that I know about. He doesn't ever really let it on during the match, but I'm sure by that point he wanted out quickly. (They didn't use tapouts to signal submissions back then FWIW, it was always just the wrestler verbally giving up...otherwise Bret definitely tapped plain as day to Owen's sharpshooter in the WM X opener.)

Perfect had actually stopped wrestling for a couple of months preceding SummerSlam and just rested up to put Bret over as well as he could in that match. He was in no shape to be working, according to all accounts, but he certainly delivered.

It really does bear saying that as brilliant as Heenan's commentary was, it's Monsoon's eruptions at him that really bring it to the next level. Heenan was funny with Vince but not nearly as much as he was with Gorilla.

Agree, phenomenal match.

Watched Legends of Wrestling last night, and the discussion centered on children of wrestling stars who could never break through (e.g. David Sammartino). He wasn't mentioned, but Curtis Axel certainly comes to mind.

It's amazing that Monsoon kept Kayfabe (mostly) to Heenan's one liners.

Did they mention David Flair?

Edit: Someone make a Heenan appreciation thread.

Ted DiBiase, Jr. Harry Smith. Doesn't feel like there's any shortage of those.

I would mention David Flair, but he got to date Stacy Keibler for a time, so I can't in good conscience call his wrestling career a total bust.

Jim Ross had an interesting observation that children of other sports stars who wash out rarely get the same kind of criticism as do the children of wrestlers.

There are metrics giving a heads up to people up front that the legendary basketball/football/baseball player's son isn't probably going to be that great; they put up underwhelming stats in college or the minors or wherever and then by the time people know about them even existing, they already know that they're probably not going to be what their fathers were.

It makes sense to me that second-generation wrestlers who crap out are more of a disappointment, because there's already an attachment to their fathers and because some second-generation stars pan out beautifully (and there's no such scouting that rates them as a lower-round pick or whatever).

Also, hard to watch Lonely Virgil's objectively decent match with the MDM without thinking about, as Paul Harvey says, the rest of the story.

That Virgil-DiBiase match is good. But I mean much of it being good is the underlying angle/story being good (which leads to it having a hot crowd), and much of that being good is DiBiase being an awesome heat magnet, so Virgil only needed to be competent.

I think this makes sense. It's totally unfair of me, but it's hard to watch Curtis Axel when I somehow keep expecting him to perform with the same skill and charisma as his dad.

Watching Nasty Boys v. Legion of Doom. I'd mark out if they brought back the old tag team belts.

Bringing back the old IC belt unfortunately came and went with no actual worthwhile impact.

being IC champ means you're on the top of the exclusive list that gets to enter the andre battle royal, don't see how that's not a worthwhile impact. win the andre trophy and you're automatically considered to be a nominee for the first annual vincent mcmahon award for outstanding achievement in the field of excellence.

He didn't make it in WWE but he is amazing in NJPW and everybody appreciates him and he's making much more than he ever would in WWE. Definitely no shortage of talent there.

An underrated match with some lol commentary was the 6 man tag at Wrestlemania 4, Heenan and the Islanders vs the Bulldogs and Koko

Jesse " Well it looks like Heenan is saving himself dont you think Gorilla?"

Monsoon " For the senior prom maybe"

Brought a legit lol

Earlier in the thread someone gave instructions on how non-Americans can get the network. That can hopefully get it for you.
