HHH/CM Punk/Kevin Nash Feud

CM Punk was the hottest wrestler since Stone Cold Steve Austin. He had just cut "the shoot" which got him and the WWE mainstream coverage. WWE followed up Punk's amazing promo with their first 5 star match in years when Punk beat Cena at Money in the Bank. Ideally, after winning, Punk would have stayed away from WWE for longer, but business is business, and SummerSlam was the next month. Punk comes back and faces Cena in the main event of SummerSlam. The two are having an amazing match like they always do, when the unthinkable happens:

Yes in 2011, Kevin Nash makes a run-in during the main event of the second biggest PPV of the year. As if that wasn't bad enough, this proceeds to happen:

So Del Rio wins, and the belt is taken off of the most over wrestler in years, to sell a few extra tickets for the tour in Mexico. Naturally, Punk begins to feud with Kevin Nash (in 2011.) Punk believed that Nash was a goon for HHH. Nash sorta confirmed this by saying that HHH told him to "stick the winner" of the main event of SummerSlam. HHH denied the whole time that he has anything to do with it. Punk cuts a bunch of good promos, Nash does not, and a match is set up between the two for Night of Champions. In real life Nash was not able to pass a physical, so on Raw, HHH changes the match to where he faces Punk himself. On the next week of Raw it is revealed that Nash texted himself to "stick the winner." So HHH and Punk face at Night of Champions, and guess what happens?

HHH wins because he always wins, and Punk is never the same. Punk goes on the have a nice championship reign, but never reaches the level of mainstream success he had before. I will argue with anyone that HHH going over Punk at Night of Champions is the worst booking decision WWE has made in the last 10 years. Oh and what happened to HHH and Nash?

Sledgehammer on a pole match...

Doing that whole writeup without referring to Nash "making wrestling fun again" is a pretty big oversight.

Also for some reason I had thought the post-MITB Punk stuff had been selected earlier, but if not, strong pick here.

we took HHH and friends and referred to all this stuff as part of it; judgement call as to whether it's OK.

Oh yeah, that's right. Meh, pick stands. Not too intent on being nitty about invalidating picks since this (even more than most drafts IMO) is about the writeup journey more than the destination.

Idk how I forgot about that. I also forgot to mention how often he brought up getting the biggest "pop" at the Royal Rumble.

Okay, I'm making this one my last pick. I've got a few other minor things on my board, but this seems like a good way to end it.

Spoiler:
Berzerker throws Jameson off the roof

Spoiler:
Prior to Monday Night Raw, there was a show called Prime Time Wrestling. For most of its run, the primary hosts were Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon. The format was pretty cool for its time, Gorilla and Heenan sat at a desk, introducing matches and whatnot.

Anyway, one of the characters that existed on this show and pretty much nowhere else in the WWF, was an extreme nerd called Jameson. He pretty much only existed to be a target of ridicule from The Brain.

OK, onto the moment. On this episode of Prime Time, the Berzerker was a guest. If you don't remember him, he was a crazy viking wrestler played by John Nord. He actually had kind of a cool gimmick. He won all his matches by countout because it seemed he didn't understand the rules of wrestling to know there were other ways to win.

For some reason, Berzerker didn't like Jameson, so he tied him to a wooden pole and set kindling around him as if he planned to set him on fire. Then for some reason he changed his plans, and did this instead:

I remember watching this live, in utter disbelief. The look on Vince's face is priceless. Unlike the Hogan/Giant moment (which was clearly inspired by this) they felt the need to explain how Jameson survived. He landed in a dumpster which broke his fall.

Final Team:

Spoiler:
Katie Vick
Death of Mr. McMahon
Winter Roofies Angelina Love
Undertaker Murders Paul Bearer
Fake Diesel and Razor
Three Minute Warning Destroy HLA
Jenna Morasca vs. Sharmell
The Reviving Elbow
The White Castle of Fear
No Holds Barred: The Match
Glacier, Mortis, and Wrath
Undertaker Sacrifices Dennis Knight
Berzerker Throws Jameson off the roof

I select…

Spoiler:

I'm not selecting the Invasion angle in general…I know that's long gone.

Spoiler:
Your name is Hugh Morrus. What? Your name is Hugh Morrus. What? Is that funny? Is that humorous? Are you here to make me laugh? What?

The above-pictured moment is actually a good promo segment, all in all. And when Austin first started saying "what?" - which started with this segment - it was actually amusing. Was it worth the long-term cost? Absolutely ****ing not. In fact, this promo was the beginning of a cause of significant damage to the watchability of the product for over 10 ****ing years straight. It led to crowds everywhere hijacking promo segments constantly with this inanity, making the product significantly more annoying.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Even though Austin's original impulse to start using this as a character wrinkle in his promos was an entertaining one, we have to judge the long-term results. And the long-term results here are absolutely atrocious.

I select Steve Austin starts saying "what?"

A lot of the picks in this draft have been stupid or just in poor taste; comparatively few of them have been so obviously dangerous. But hey, at least these are highly trained athletes who are capable of handling these stunts.

Spoiler:
The Jim Cornette Scaffold Match

The setting: Starrcade 1986. The Road Warriors (with manager Paul Ellering) met the Midnight Express (with manager Jim Cornette) in a scaffold match to blow off a feud. Now, they had attempted a few scaffold matches in the past, with the scaffold being perhaps 10-12 feet above the floor. Dangerous, sure, but not obviously absurd.

Well, for Starrcade they had the bright idea to have the scaffold up about 20 feet high or so above the ring surface (+/ 25 feet from the floor).

The point of a scaffold match is supposed to be to knock your opponents off the scaffold into the ring below. The Road Warriors won by knocking the Midnight Express off, which is dumb enough. But then they chased noted stuntman extraordinaire Jim Cornette up the scaffold. Plan A, according to Cornette, was for him to drop and roll like a parachutist from an airplane. The minor detail, of course, is that HE DIDN'T HAVE A DAMN PARACHUTE, and the scaffold was 20+ feet high, and he'd probably die. Plan B was for Big Bubba Rogers to catch Cornette -- never minding the detail that catching a human being falling from about 15 feet above your head is not a good idea. Also, apparenty, Bubba had some depth perception issues.

Did I mention Cornette is afraid of heights?

The result of this flagrant violation of the laws of physics was predictable:

Multiple torn knee ligaments, and large medical bills which nearly exhausted his $10,000 Starrcade payday.

The shoot interview is well worth the listen, even if you think this is a bad pick:

That's a very good pick that I had largely forgotten about.

Also it's comforting to see Ray Traylor resurface after being out for a few rounds.

That's a little odd, I know for sure I heard him say on an interview (a while ago) that he wished he could take the What stuff back.

I've heard this too fwiw.

There's a pick out there that should be a top two rounder and possibly top 10 pick. I'm sure nobody will pick it and I'm looking forward to going over it again
