What if? What if?

Wouldn't have worked nearly as well. Sting has never embraced being a heel.

I wasn't a fan at the time, but doesn't the NWO being a big thing basically hinge on the idea that it was a Hogan Heel turn?

Exactly. So how do the monday night wars turn out? And what happens to hogan? His career was fading

What if Sting ends up being the 3rd guy in the NWO?
Who feuds with them then? Hogan? And if so perhaps Hogan is booed even more than he already was. NWO vs WCW had a northern wrestling vs southern wrestling element, and some people even really thought Nash and Hall were sent to destroy WCW by Vince.

Certainly Sting being a minion sent by McMahon to destroy WCW and the legacy of southern wrestling would have seemed outlandish. He was the biggest face in WCW/NWA over the last decade.

Maybe Hogan turns heel another way; almost certainly much less effectively. Maybe he goes back to the WWF.

But perhaps WCW survives because of this. Hogan, Nash, and Hall would end up with far less influence backstage. Maybe Jericho, Rey, Benoit, Eddy, etc. get pushed far earlier instead of being wasted. But as long as the ownership of WCW did not understand wrestling, it would face difficulties like the ones that piled up.

Edit: And if WCW never gets huge like they did because of the NWO, maybe Vince McMahon doesn't see a need to change the product, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Attitude Era, Russo, etc. never happen.

The consequences of one thing like this being different could be truly drastic.

Originally, it was supposed to be Luger, but anything other than Hogan would have been worse because face Hogan would have ended up coming out on top like he always did back then and killed the group, unless he eventually turned anyway.

What if either Hall or Nash, just one or both, never left WWE?

What if Bret Hart never left and there was no WCW screwjob, how does that affect Austin?

What if HBK never hurts his back, what does that mean for DX?

What if Austin never broke his neck?

Per Kevin Nash on Legends of Wrestling, Hogan was skittish about it and the next idea was Sting. The Luger rumor was strong in dirt sheets, but seeing Nash say it was Sting as the backup firsthand is stronger. Although he also said that Sting didn't want to do it.

What if Stephanie would have agreed to let Vince run the incest angle during her first pregnancy (Vince or Shane as the father)

I don't know that it affects Austin much, he still wins the title at WM14, although possibly against Bret instead of HBK. It affects the company in a huge way, though, as the screwjob was the launching pad for the Mr. McMahon character. Without it, Austin doesn't have the definitive feud upon becoming champion, and the company maybe doesn't turn things around as far as the war with WCW went.

I think more is made of that moment than it was (the announcement, that is).

I think it cost Nitro the night as far as ratings go, but the tide had already significantly turned WWE's way and we ultimately get the same result in the war (possibly slightly slower, possibly just about the same).

What if Melina and Alicia Fox never had the greatest match of all time?

What if Katie Vick had lived?

Huh. I always sort of figured that was just a dirtsheet thing. That WWE just openly advertised it as true in one of their own DVDs is crazy. Vince is even more touched in the head than I've given him credit for.

There's a very good chance that without Threadzilla first being posted I'd never have gotten back into wrestling. I wasn't watching at all when that thread first went up. And without good posters to continue to banter with I'd certainly have quit again since.

This is likely the only reason I'm sticking around too. It's much more fun around here when the product is good though.
