Thanks dude. Sorry to hear about your loss.

What are your thoughts on letting cats outside to roam around? After doing some research it appears most people recommend not to, but she spends most of her time outside and it seems a bit cruel and unnatural to keep them in imo. Our other cat doesn't go out yet but we were planning on letting him in a few weeks when he has had all his jabs.

The main problem with allowing cats outside is the ease at which they spread and get diseases. i don't know if there is information on why this is so, but feline leukemia rates are way higher for outdoor cats, and feline transmittable aids is almost unheard of in indoor cats. Plus traffic deaths are always a possibility with outdoor cats

We let our two cats in the backyard. And they lived to 18 and 19 years each. So I'm not sure if them getting sick at the end had any more with going outside than just old age.

First legitimate mention of AIDS on this forum. Well played master.

I read that to mean Khali has in ring AIDS.
Which is true, of course.

Obv this is an issue but I plan on taking them to the vets fairly regularly. In fact we took them the past weekend and the one that goes out had nothing wrong with her except one flea. As far as tragic death, there is a big field and woods near my house which is where she plays; it's not as if she's running around roads or anything.

Yeah 18 and 19 is really old for cats, that's obv not because you let them outside. Plus I was more talking about letting them go out whenever and wherever they want, rather than just the backyard. We did this with our cat when I was a kid and it lived until 16.

Just seems a strange concept to me to keep a cat indoors for it's entire life. I didn't even know people did this until last night when I found out it's standard.

Mountain lions are cats, so they are awesome.

(or was this an anti-Mac statement?)

I understand, and this is great, but aside from heartworms and fleas, there isnt a whole lot of preventative medicine for cats. There isn't any type of drug they can be given to prevent the lukemias and aids unfortunately.

Hamsters and the like are decent pets for kids.

Cats are clearly the greatest pets. Not hating on dogs or anything but they're way way way much more work. All you have to do with cats is feed them and occasionally take them to the vets (although they're a bit more work when they're kittens obv). Plus it's more rewarding when your cat comes and sits with you and starts purring (and yes, they do do this at times other than when they want feeding). I would get annoyed with a dog hanging around me all the time.

Edit - This is working under the assumption that you let your cat go out whenever. If not, you'd have to do the whole litter tray thing too.

I think fish are the worst common American pets because they are the least relatable. I have multiple friends with fishtanks, and I just don't in a million years understand the appeal.

Yeah I'm not quite sure what purpose having fish as pets serves. I guess some people just like watching then swim about.

i don't begrudge ppl for having cats. i'd hate having a dog too. far be it for me to take my hatred of the animal kingdom and force others to share it. i believe ppl should be allowed to believe whatever they want! i'm just that nice of a guy

but seriously, i ****ing hate cats

Lol, cats won't bite you unless you're trying to pet them when they don't want it. Not in my experience anyway. I only give my cats attention if they approach me first.

I agree with you on the each to their own thing though, so your hatred of cats is fine with me!
