Basically, the difference between Collinsworth and Simms is this:

When Collinsworth says something you think is really dumb, you stop for at least a brief moment to consider that he might be right and you might be wrong.

Yeah, that's well said.

Simms often just speaks incoherently or nonsensically. His announcing career is roughly equivalent to Art Donovan being hired as a full time wrestling announcer for two decades and never improving on his King of the Ring performance.

Is he really that bad? Hasn't he been an announcer pretty much since he retired 20+ years ago?

Yes. Simms started the same year Donovan did KOTR actually. Simms might be the most universally disliked performer on TV; I don't recall ever seeing a comment praising him, and he is incessantly ridiculed. The one thing that unites humanity is we all think Simms is bad.

I'll say that Donovan sounded totally lost in a way that Simms doesn't. Simms is really more damaging, because he has a strong habit of saying totally incorrect things with the utmost of confidence.

I also don't really know what casual fans feel about Simms. You would certainly expect that hardcore fans are going to hate him more, because they're going to notice more of his constant stream of bull**** over the course of every game. I guess I assume that he must do okay with the masses, or he would have at least been downgraded from being CBS's top color commentator at some point. Then again, I don't really assume that the masses are fine with Michael Cole, so my logic might be bad. Admittedly, nobody is actually turning off the NFL over the bad announcing.

Some casual fans likely assume Simms is good simply because he was a Super Bowl MVP QB. And the NFL is very often watched at a bar or at some kind of social gathering, so many fans don't pay attention to the announcers at all.

That said, Simms has the habit of saying things that are just flagrantly wrong to anyone with eyeballs; that a player was covered when he wasn't, that the pass was overthrown when it wasn't, that a team will certainly try something on the next play that they don't do, etc. Even a first time viewer would scratch their heads at some of the stuff Simms says.

You all realize Simms is a legit idiot, right? I mean a tested and proven idiot.

He scored a 10 on the Wonderlic test. A 10!

To put that in perspective, Eli Manning scored a 39 and Vince Young scored a 6.

Here's a shameless plug for my Academic Discussion of Wrestling Thread. Despite the thread's heretofore Shockmaster-like debut, I will submit that there's been some really (at least what I think) fantastic stuff coming out, such as "On the Phenomenology of AJ Styles and the Mysteries of They Don't Want None"

Give the thread a try, or it may have to go the way of Bastion Booger themed WWF ice cream bars.

I'm a lurker over at PoG, and occasionally I'll enter a sheep or guesstimania, but I really think my favorite is reading the reveals for Walrus games. I actually entered one once and failed horribly. Apparently I have to wait for a Yacht Rock Walrus game to start up and I'll dominate.

Anyway my favorite part of the walrus reveal is how offended people get when their selection ranks low. There is one currently on the front page from 2 years ago with a couple guys from this forum, that is just beautiful. Anyway just thought I'd share in case someone is looking for some entertaining reading

I wish.

It's more to inform everyone about all the awesome places to visit that are too numerous to fit into a lifetime.

(and also to make fun of everyone else's picks)

LKJ, how insufferable are UW fans right now?

Well I don't live in Washington these days and I definitely won't open Twitter at a time like this, so I'm pretty well-insulated.

Mariners hanging around with outside playoff hopes, so I've mostly been ignoring that awful college football result and pretending that it's still baseball season.

Lol, you have no idea. Picked up dinner to go from a local pub type place. Packed with these people. insufferable is an understatement.

It's only going to get worse, but I am still scared about playing Oregon next week.

My Cougs are 1-2, have generally not looked good, and are giving up less than a field goal in the spread against Oregon tonight, actually temporarily being favored at one point. I haven't had a chance to watch Oregon yet this year really, but I get the sense that they're not that good, and that for once it won't be straight delusion when UW expects to beat them.

I'm expecting WSU to lose to them tonight, but here's hoping.

Confirmed no real reason for UW to fear Oregon. Despite the fact that I'll be rooting for Oregon in that game, I'm pleased to report that Oregon appears to be in pretty bad shape.
