Not me. I was only bothered that he lost via tap out instead of pin.

Looking back at it, yes. It would have been nice to see him win and get the Kane "lose the belt back the next night" title run just to say he did in fact win it.

I was at MITB when he faced Cena right after this and was genuinely bummed when he didn't go over. I'd have been thrilled for MH to get transitional title run in recognition of his contributions and tenure.

I was just listening to the LAW RAW report podcast because I was bored beyond belief when I heard that Mick needs a hip replacement. However, he doesn't have health insurance and the surgery costs $60k. I'm sorry, what? He works for the WWE. Mick ****ing Foley can't get them to pay for his medical bills so he can travel in comfort and go show-to-show with the carnival? Such a joke. This guy made HHH, Rock, and to an extent he even made Austin. He made Vince millions of dollars over the years. The WWE is a billion dollar company. Is it just me or is there something wrong here? I do believe I've lost any respect I ever had for Vince and Co..

I do know that Jesse tried to create a union and one big reason was health insurance. So I did know that wrestlers do not have health insurance. But to let someone under their employee suffer is horrible. Especially when they're suffering because of sacrifices they made to make your company what it is today. Despicable.

To me, Mark Henry basically got the career that he deserved. He was horrible and lazy for years and years and occupied screentime that he had no business occupying during that period. I'm glad that he became great for a time, and I'm sure I would have been happy for him if he'd gotten the quick transitional title reign, but I'm fine with the fact that he didn't since it seemed like he only ever justified years of wasted guaranteed salary with a handful of really good/great years at the end.

He'll very likely get into the Hall of Fame. That's good enough.

I do agree with iso on that post above, assuming that the info about Foley and his medical bills is accurate of course.

Not that I'm defending WWE not providing health insurance (and also resisting the temptation to make a political point about tying health insurance to employment), but does Mick Foley seriously not have $60k?

I would have thought he would have been making $500k/year at an absolute minimum for those years he was near the top of the pecking order. Plus there's all the other stuff he's done (book deals, etc.). If he's not a multi-millionaire, then either he's absolutely horrible with money management (which would be extremely surprising to me) or wrestler pay is several fold less than I had assumed, even for big name guys.

It crossed my mind that he should have the money. But I'm just going to go off what I'm reading and not make judgments there. I think it's ludicrous.

It'd surprise me too. Especially after reading his books. But he's married with kids so lol

My point was more what he's done for the company in the past. I couldn't care less about the politics behind that garbage.

For me, it really boils down to the fact that I hate seeing people in pain. I've had 3 herniated discs in my neck for over 4 years now and dealt with a portion of that without health care. Leaving people to suffer is the worst thing people can do imo

No argument from me. Sorry about your neck troubles. Hopefully it's better now?

Sorry, but Mick not having health insurance is absurd. Someone of his stature knows the risks with not having it; and has known for his entire career that WWE doesn't provide it. Time to spend some of that cash.

Mick has a Facebook post up where he explains this in more detail.

Cliffs: He let his health insurance lapse after missing a payment, and is on a handshake deal with WWE right now and so isn't an employee. More of a "lol USA#1 health insurance system" than anything.

Don't know if this is sarcasm (i.e. this surgery is gonna be so fun ) or serious (i.e. actually looking forward to it because you have hope that it will alleviate your problems.

Either way, best of luck.

The one thing I really hate with WWE is the "independent contractor" status its workers have. I understand that's how it has to be for smaller, indy promotions that have shoestring budgets, but FFS open up your wallets and buy your workers some health insurance.

The "independent contractor" thing also has ****ty tax implications, as wrestlers have to file in every state in which they perform. I know the folks on the main roster make decent money (esp. when Merch sales, etc, are factored in) but lead by example and do some basic things to take care of your people.

Makes me think of this article I read. Really well done piece done by Vice on the inner workings of WWE and how Vince operates. Take some time to read it

Rating a match 6 stars is really, really stupid. I haven’t watched the match yet, but even if it was the greatest match in wrestling history, that isn’t any reason to completely overhaul a rating system in use for 35 years.

It would be like a high school English teacher reading the best essay he’d ever seen and saying “Well, A+ isn’t really appropriate because I’ve given other A+ grades in the past. I’ll give it a Ж.” So dumb.

+1 to the 6-star hate, though it doesn't surprise me from Meltzer.

Jim Cornette and a co-author used to do a newsletter before Meltzer and gave star ratings on a four star system, like with movies (which is where Cornette got the idea to rate matches from). Until one Funk vs Lawler match they saw was so good that they gave it five instead.

I know in the moment watching it, I was like, "this is the sort of match dreams are made of!" However, I really think giving it six stars is really going overboard and who knows if the match will age well in the future. Recent bias does influence a rating, especially if the match was a first-time one-on-one and takes place at a promotion's biggest show of the year in front of thousands and thousands of people.

It's long, 46 minutes long (it didn't feel that long watching it though), both guys took some pretty hellacious bumps, and Meltzer really rates matches highly at the Tokyo Dome if they are great.

Personally, I didn't care much to give it a rating. I loved that match as much as I loved the three matches prior to that and those are the matches wrestling fans should be looking at to see why NJPW is such a great promotion and why January 4th Tokyo Dome shows are a thrill to see.
