Yep. I watched the 1994 WWF timeline with Waltman a few days ago and thought he came off as insanely nice.

His rep in the 90s and his political associations at the time (particularly HBK) make me think that he was probably a jackass in the past, but people do grow up. Modern-day Nash seems awesome.

He seems to have a lot more self-awareness than, say, Hogan ever did. Which I appreciate immensely.

That is an insanely low bar to clear. Even jaded old Bret Hart circles laps around Hogan in the self-awareness department, which is saying something. But in any case I agree.

Fair enough, it's mostly lazy posting on my part. I asked myself "which wrestler has a low level of self-awareness?" and my brain insta-returned Hogan, making for perhaps an over-obvious comparison on my part.

The old Hit Man example is on point though--it's nice to see him be a little less of a mark for himself as the years go by.

Modern day nash does seem pretty great.

reigns and nash have a lot in common. Both were awesome in their silent badass gimmick (diesel as Shawn bodyguard), both are unbearable during their undeserved face runs, and both are (or in reigns case. Expected to be) natural heels who excel when they can be themselves on screen.

Nwo Nash was pretty awesome imo

They should never be mentioned like that ever again.

Nash is great on the mic and has a ton of charisma.

Face diesel was really bad though. Maybe not reigns bad, but a significant downgrade from the more modern nash we know and love

Nash was significantly worse than Reigns in the ring. Significantly. He had no mobility and didn't have a single cool move in his arsenal. Reigns has already had more good matches than Nash ever had.

It's true that Nash was better on the mic, and had more charisma, which I guess is left inarguable on an objective level due to just how popular he is and having it all be owing to look/personality/talking, despite the fact that all of his mic work consisted of him saying unfunny things and then smirking at how ****ing clever he was and then a bunch of young people regarding him as super cool despite the fact that he was a goddamn 40-year-old who spent most of his career acting like he was 18 and just got accepted into the most cliche frat house on campus.

But in Nash's defense, he might be the only wrestler in the big two to ever pin someone without being anywhere near touching them.

As I write that I'm not sure I regard Reigns as having any cool moves either, but the part about already beating Nash's life-long match resume certainly holds true.

Took me a second but I laughed after figuring it out.

I liked a couple of Nash's moves. Particularly the Jackknife and his elbows in the corner. The Jackknife is a great finisher for someone as tall as him.

My favorite Nash spot would have been his sidewalk slam. That's the closest thing in his move set to something I liked, since it looked believably strong.

I agree that a powerbomb is good for a super tall guy in theory, but the problem for me was that he did it while all of these WCW cruisers starting doing their really high-impact powerbombs, and it looked soft to me that Nash was just dropping dudes (even from way high) while the likes of Benoit/Guerrero/etc. were absolutely planting them with authority.

Nash made friends with the booker and other people with power throughout his whole career. He made friends so effectively with Bischoff that Bischoff made him the booker. He relentlessly pursued his own interest, but he doesn't pretend that he didn't, which is better than the people who pretend that they took the high road, or those who are so deluded that they think they did when they didn't.

Nash during his wrestling career was a good foil for serious characters and that was his best role in wrestling outside of the times somebody legitimately got him upset like Piper. If neither guy/side in a feud takes wrestling seriously, then it just becomes a comedy segment without passion in the subsequent matches and feud, but against somebody like the Horsemen or Goldberg or Bret Hart, it becomes a clash of philosophies and personalities.

Random question: Would you guys have been happy to see HHH attack SCSA in the cage the night after WM X-7? It seems like the crowd (and subsequently the IWC) thought that HHH was going to turn face by saving The Rock from SCSA.

HHH just beat the **** out of the beloved Austin for 40 minutes at No Way Out. Prior to that he feuded and lost to Angle at the Rumble and after that he feuded and lost to Taker. I can see that he really accomplished all that he could as a heel at this point, however, it seems ridiculous that he would save The Rock just to feud with a guy who he just beat in the blowoff match 5 weeks prior. Did fans really want HHH to turn face? I think they did but if it happened, they would've ultimately disappointed and begging for him to turn heel shortly thereafter.

This is a transcript from Bret's podcast about the only time he was scared to take the Bonzai Drop. Not safe for life warning.

Spoiler:
Quote:
”Not most of the time. One time when we were in India and everybody had gotten really sick. I remember they told me Yoko was so sick he couldn’t wrestle but they didn’t have any replacements. It was in Delhi or something like that. It was in India and it might have been 80-90,000 people watching at a big soccer stadium. It was a huge crowd and they insisted that he had to go out and wrestle me. I remember Yoko got up and, like I said, he was sick all day. Not feeling well but he sucked it up like you do in wrestling or did back then. He went out and had the match with me and I remember him climbing up on to the second rope and I remember looking at the back of his ass and he had completely sh*t his trunks. There was sh*t everywhere. It was like he sat in a big puddle of pea soup. I remember thinking as I was lying there, “Oh my God!” He bravely jumped backwards and did his Banzai Drop and I moved out of the way and it reminded me of a stamp pad. Like there was a big brown stamp right in the middle of the ring where he landed and bounced. I felt bad for old Yoko because he was sicker than a dog. Nobody should have made him wrestle but he went in there and wrestled. After about five minutes he must have just let it rip. That was the only time I was ever scared of a Banzai Drop (laughs).”

I just went and read the JR AMA on moorobot's recommendation. I totally disagree with him and think it's one of the weakest AMAs I've read through.

Dude doesn't answer most of the questions. "Who has lots of potential?" "A lot of people." "Who do you think is the most underused talent?" "That's subjective. I could say lots of names." "Who was the biggest causer of drama backstage?" "I don't keep negative memories."
