i may be naive but I have a feeling the last few months have been a slow build to Cena turning. From the time Rock came back to cut a promo on him to now CM Punk. The groundwork is there leading to a Cena heel turn.

It may easily be the case that they took measures to test the waters for it and were going to decide based on whether the crowd began turning on him or not.
