Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

That is a legendary promo from the Briscoes. How that didn't land them in WWE by itself I have no idea. Also, R.I.P. Kronus.

ROH is definitely better overall in-ring than anyone else but their booking is still a little weird sometimes. I understand wanting to have dramatic matches with more power moves and less of the WWE style build-up, but 200 finishers and 199 near falls in a single match gets to be old after about near fall number 50 IMO.

The fact that this guy is not in the WWE is a joke. Imagine Ziggler selling these moves.

Totally agree with this. That's my biggest criticism with Roh with their 200 "wrestlemania finishes" in every match. Like you said it really loses it's impact after near fall number 50. It's gotten better than it has been in the past but still ridiculous.

Thumbs up Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

Somebody asked me to suggest 5 matches of puro and indy and i came up with this because I'm perhaps to into wrestling. he suggested posting it so here it is....

AJPW:
Kobashi/Misawa vs Kawada/Taue on 6/9/95. Any puro match list you see will either have this or Kawada vs Misawa (6/3/94 (linked in best matches thread)) as #1. read this through atmosphere then stop so you don't get spoilers.

Jumbo vs Tenryu on 6/5/89: The crowd ranks up there with any of the hottest american crowds ever and the performances are incredible.

Tenryu vs Kawada on 10/28/00: A forgotten classic because it didn't receive 5* and is after the NOAH/AJPW split when AJPW lost Misawa/Kobashi/Akiyama.

Jumbo vs Kawada on 10/24/91. Kawada's first big match and one of Jumbo's last. The smaller Kawada employs a different strategy than usual against his bigger foe and what comes of this is a 5* match imo (****3/4 from Meltzer, f him).

Kobashi/Misawa vs Kawada/Taue on 12/3/93. Finals of the World Tag League. 6 months after Taue/Kawada form their team they try to take down Kawada's former partner and his new protege.

NJPW:
Tanahashi vs Goto on 11/11/07. My absolute favorite NJPW match. It's a face vs face match but you'd never know it.

Hashimoto vs Tenryu from 98 G-1 tourney. ****3/4 match imo and a helluva battle.

Sasuke vs Liger on 7/8/94. The absolute greatest junior match without question.

Liger vs Ohtani on 2/9/97. Could watch this match for days.

El Samurai vs Kanemoto final of 97 Best of the Super Juniors.

Indy (hard to find videos, so some d/l links):
Claudio vs El Generico from Kurt Russell Reunion 2: I'm not a big fan of PWG so it took many months of hearing about this for me to get around to this. Watched it a week or two ago with the year coming to an end and imo this is the best match of the year.

KENTA vs Bryan Danielson from Glory By Honor V Night 2: Incredible war. KENTA is undefeated in ROH after 6+ months and Danielson has a legit arm injury...KENTA tries to kick it off.

Bryan Danielson vs Nigel McGuinness from Unified: This match has it all...expert mat work, brawling, violence, and lots and lots of drama.

KENTA vs Nigel McGuinness from 7th Anniversary Show: Another masterpiece involving a legit hurt arm (both arms are hurt here) and KENTA being a merciless sob. If you don't know Nigel's character or sig. moves watch the Unified or Rising Above match first and this match will be much better for you.

Nigel McGuinness vs Austin Aries from Rising Above: i gave this one five stars for the incredible drama throughout the match. Nigel suffers a concussion in the first few minutes and it only adds to what would've been an already great dramatic match.

extras since 5 is impossible:
Samoa Joe vs Kenta Kobashi: The ace in Japan for the past 5 years vs the ace in the american indys = *****

Danielson vs Morishima: Manhattan Mayhem II

other stuff:
5* match list thread. Want to find the best of the best? Check this thread out.

From my youtube channel:
All 90s AJPW matches rated ****1/2+
Every 5* match in puro

if a mod has a problem with listing d/l links plz get rid of them. idk if it's accepted. if it's a huge deal i'll up the matches on youtube and repost but that's a pita.

ROH World Tag Team Championship
Jay & Mark Briscoe defend against the Young Bucks

ROH World Television Championship

i know that the edwards/cole vs davey/o'rilley match is gonna be amazing, but i am very disappointed that there will not be a world title defense at the 10th anniversary show.

and i hope steen curb stomps jimmy on his way to the world championship at the next NYC show.

ill post my live trip report in this thread.

Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

Tag title match should be interesting other than that looks very meh. Wish they'd just hand the belt to Steen on this show and get rid of their ridic MMA style main events. Supposedly NOAH stars are supposed to show up this year in ROH so I'm hopeful to see some fresh stuff in ROH soon. Seeing a title vs title match between Steen and Morishima would be the nuts.

In Puro news, Tanahashi finally got dethroned after 13 months as the IWGP champ by Okada who is a relative nobody (one singles match (that was about 3 minutes) in NJPW in before getting this title shot). Tanahashi's reign had definitely served it's purpose and he doesn't need the belt to draw but to give it to Okada instead of Naito, Nagata, Nakamura, Goto, or even MiSu ffs is ridic..

Okada has his first defense on 3/4 vs Tetsuya Naito and it will probably be the first legit MOTY (****1/2+) in any promotion. Naito won't win but he looked fantastic in defeat last year vs Tanahashi for the belt and vs Nakamura in the G-1 finals.

Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

Can you sum up how these big feuds came together, esp what is going on in that main event cos that is odd. Ive not paid any attention to ROH since the back end of last year with the last ppv i saw in full was probably Best in the World but i should start paying more attention to them now the WWE is pretty aidsy overall.

How did Steen end up back in the company?

Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

agree with getting rid of the mma-inspired main events. but that is what davey wants, and as long as he is in roh, that is what we are gonna get.(please note, i am huge davey fan, and thing he is the best in ring indy wrestler out there today.) but how is there no world title defence at this show? its a pretty big deal.

i hope that after the steen/jacobs match, they set up steen to finally get his hands on davey at the next NYC show, and then have another steen/generico match at final battle, this time for the world title.

he won a match at final battle 2011 against steve corino. if corino won, steen would be banned forever. if steen won, steen would be reinstated in to roh.

the booking has been kinda hit and miss since best in the world(first major show under the sinclair company). im still holding out hope for the booking to catch up to the in ring product, because it is still the best in the us by far.

davey likes to think he is a ufc fighter lately. he has his "team" of guys. at the last iPPV, the main event was davey vs eddie edwards. eddie had dan "the beast" severn in his corner. it is feeling like mma, over pro wrestling. once steen gets his shot, the pro wrestling feel will return.

Check out Mohammed Akbar

He reprises a Sheik type Middle Eastern heel, and in this (smart and quite entertaining, imo) promo, he assaults a veteran with a prosthetic leg.

The fun irony here is that Akbar is irl a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran, now living the dream as an Indy wrestler.

I'm pretty sure this is a fan made video of the Misawa vs Jumbo music video but this is on par with any of the best WWE promos and any wrestling fan would enjoy it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcK_pww96ao

First match in the Jumbo/Misawa trilogy which holds up as one of the greatest matches ever in one of the hottest atmospheres ever.

Angry Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

Didn't realize till a few hours before it happened but NJPW had a PPV earlier today. It really didn't look that promising which is sad because NJPW has so much talent but they have too much talent to the point where their PPV only had one singles match. Can't wait to d/l the show and see Okada vs Naito since it'll probably be MOTY until Rock/Cena happens.

Sadly ROH's 10th Anniversary show will be better than the NJPW show. Looking forward to the Bucks vs Briscoes, Maria, and will probably watch (ie: try to get through) the main event. Maybe the motivated Homicide will show up vs Bennett and make that decent. Jacobs vs Steen will probably be ok to though I've only seen one singles match from Jacobs so not sure what to expect.

spoiler on Steen/Jacobs match:

Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

As expected Okada vs Naito was the ****. Review from another forum:

Quote:
after seeing people praise the ROH 10th Anniversary ME, I'm just going to throw this out there.

Okada vs Naito. NJPW 40th Anniversary. ****1/2 - When you compare the two matches, it's like you can see exactly why NJPW is better than ROH right now in terms of match quality.

Okada vs Naito had long term consistent selling. Not so much in Davey/Kyle vs Adam/Eddie. Like, when Okada got his leg hurt badly (do did a move that damaged it), he actually buckled down and sold it, sometimes falling over. Both guys sold their injuries after the match too even. No need to look "uber badass".

Okada vs Naito had move build up and very clear psychology, with some pretty cool spots and moves sprinkled in. ROH's ME... Had a lot of moves, practically no build up, and the psychology was REALLY loose, at best.

Okada vs Naito had control segments. Okada vs Naito had the crowds attention, etc.

Big flaw though: the beginning was very slow until Naito started picking up the offense.

Still, great match.
the above is not my review. all the stars i've seen thrown at it so far have it averaging ****1/2 which I can get behind because it was awesome.

Kazuchika Okada (c) vs Tetsuya Naito

Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

Found this news on 411mania.com as per usual.

Quote:
- According to prowrestling.net, ROH World Heavyweight Champion Kevin Steen attacked two men at ringside at the conclusion of the ROH Boiling Point iPPV. Zack Zimmerman, who was sitting two rows behind the men hit, stated the following about the incident…

"Kevin Steen assaulted two fans who mixed words with him post match. Steen grabbed one and made out with him. The man shoved Steen and Steen swung and hit the man in the face and then hit the fan next to him who spat. If these men were plants, they were interacting with us all night and were very convincing as fans. One man bled from the lip. The men were two rows in front of me and Steen POTATOED both."

What happened to Chargers in 09?

We need a just over half way 2012 matches of the year so far from him. If anyone thinks they can step up to the challenge and give one feel free. I'm too busy to keep up.

Bothy Indy and Puro.

I believe that Chargers is isolated; he's still posting matches in the "what matches are you watching" thread.

But yeah, a Chargers/Isolated matches of 2012 so far would be good.

Re: ***Official Indy/Puro Thread***

I really can't make a complete list because I just haven't watched a ton of wrestling this year, and hardly any independent stuff but these I think are worth checking out:

NJPW: The New Beginning

Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xoo...i-c-njpw_sport

Tanahashi has grown on me as I've watched him more; he puts on consistently very good performances although I don't think he's on the same level of the well-known Japanese greats. This was the first match I'd ever seen of Okada's and came away very impressed.

Masato Tanaka vs Hirooki Goto - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xom...oto-njpw_sport

For what it's worth, the NJPW The New Beginning PPV I found to be a good watch from start to end. I think Tanaka looks better now than he ever did, and that's as someone that was a huge fan of the feud with Mike Awesome. He and Goto have a fun little hardcore match here with some pretty good spots along the way.

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom VI

Prince Devitt & Ryusuke Taguchi vs Davey Richards & Rocky Romero - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrz...o-1-4-12_sport

Didn't really think I'd get into this match, as I've struggled to get into Davey Richards, but I liked it a lot. Both teams seemed to work well together, and it never quite got to ROH-ish levels of cartoonishness wrestling.

Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) vs Minoru Suzuki - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xnq...uki-njpw_sport

The other match with Tanahashi is against Suzuki, which I would say is probably the less important and less impressive match, but I've always liked Suzuki and think he has just enough of a different style to make most of his matches interesting to watch.

AJPW Rise Up Tour Final - Kenny Omega vs. Kai - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrl...05-27-12_sport

AJPW just isn't very good right now, in my opinion, but these two have been a rare bright spot. Pretty hot feud and the match was a worthy culmination to it.

ZERO1 11th Anniversary Show - Shinjiro Otani & Daichi Hashimoto vs Kensuke Sasaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima - http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xp7...ma-zero1_sport

I just kind of stumbled into this match somehow. A bit of nostalgia was involved as Sasuke and Otani had a pretty decent feud in the early 2000's in NJPW that was in and out of the world of wrestling. Daichi is the son of the late Shinya Hashimoto, and looks to be on the road to continuing that legacy.
