I'm unsure which match you're talking about and if you want an NJPW link or YT lol so...

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...7pI/edit#gid=0

I think you'll like that link if you have NJPW World

Yeah I had that link open for like 3 weeks straight when I had World.

I watched the Elgin/Naito match and enjoyed it but never thought it would be 5 stars. It seems a bit high although I'm not the biggest Elgin fan. Did Kenny/Naito get 5 stars?

Also yeah Naito is pretty awesome, he looks like he's right out of a Yakuza game. I think it's in NJPW's best interests to push him more than anyone else this year.

Yeah, Kenny/Naito got that as well.

I'm glad you thought that way because he, along with Tanahashi, Okada, Yano, and TenCozy, made appearances and they were in fights in Yakuza 6.

Thoughts on the match* if you've watched, Dar0? I remember watching the Shinsuke vs Naito match be having my jaw on the floor as this was only a couple of weeks into my viewing of NJPW. I've watched a few more times and as recent as < 6 months ago and still love that match. The Naito vs Okada match is even better and I remember being astonished during the match at how good it was. I could tell that something mind blowing was going down. I have 80+ 5* matches but this'd be in my top 20 matches of all time for sure, perhaps top 10.

*I assume you meant the Okada/Naito match is the one you were going to view.

I started watching it last night then fell asleep because i was super tired. I will def get back to it either tonight or tomorrow.

For the little i did watch, a major thing that stood out to me was Naito then and Naito now are like 2 completely different guys with the way they carry themselves in the ring.

Definitely. They started pushing Goto and Naito to the top of the card at the same time and did the same thing with them. afaik Goto got his first shot at the IWGP strap on 11/11/2007 in another very recommended match (also 5* from this guy) but they weren't attempting to have him as a main stay at the top of the card until spring 2011 and when he got his second IWGP title shot on 6/18/11. Both shots against Tanahashi, ironically enough and also 5* from this guy.

Naito turned face by breaking up with then partner Yujiro Takahashi (guy in BC now). He immediately got pushed as a main eventer as well. Made it to the finals of the 2011 G-1 and got that first title shot on 10/10/11. Neither guy was given any kind of gimmick, unless you think Goto wearing baggy pants is a gimmick. Both super white meat babyfaces destined to fail. The only reason Naito changed was because he got a couple of injuries. There was the long awaited rematch between Shinsuke and Naito in November or December of 2012 but Naito messed his elbow up badly prior to the match. He worked through it and had surgery immediately afterward. He came back months later and a few months later ripped his knee to shreds and he was never the same athlete. I think that NJPW sending him to Mexico was his saving grace in NJPW because he needed that extra something to overcome his new limitations and that extra something has propelled him into stardom and the NJPW gold.

Goto finally last year showed some personality with joining Chaos and just doing anything that wasn't straight up coming to the ring > wrestle > leave. But he seems to be in the same spot he was 6 years ago. A tool for the champion to use on his way to bigger challenges.

Yes, go watch New Beginning in Osaka. Don't just watch the main event though. Shibata/Ospreay was pretty good and Hiromu Takahashi/Dragon Lee was really good (and those guys have been wrestling each other a lot in the last few years and those matches have received great acclaim.)

Ibushi is not facing Okada on the 45th anniversary show. Tiger Mask W is facing Okada though.

I just watched it tonight. Dar0 and I don't see eye to eye sometimes but he nailed this one, Okada doing his dropkicks and top rope moves with what's supposed to be a mangled knee killed this match for me too.

Beyond that, the way the match was laid out, Okada has to tap to the kneebar (or have the towel thrown in, that would have been great) at about the 30-35-minute mark. Okada surviving that and going on to win is over the top unrealistic. It was too massive an attack on the knee for that, the offense needed to be more even in distribution. Meh.
