And don't forget that guy lost to Jeremy Horn three times.

Search on Youtube for Gracie Breakdown.

Example of their videos:

Then test it on your brothers/friends.

Watch the first 4 UFC tournaments, it's impossible not to be hooked afterwards. Don't look up spoilers first. They can all be found online. PM me for details.

first 4 tournaments have little to nothing to do with todays mma tho. It's like completely different sports.

It's cool to go back and appreciate where it came from, but i probably would not try to sell the sport to someone by showing them that abortion.

notsureifserious

the first tournaments showed how Ju Jitsu is the single most important thing for any MMA fighter, that still stands today.

watching the first tournaments isn't about wanting to see brutal beatings, it's about seeing both the evolution and the way that the most skilled martial artist figures out a way to win, which is inspiring, and again is evident today.

a guy new to mma can't appreciate the skill involved with positions against the cage and on the ground which is therefore boring to watch. if you see how important it is vs guys who don't know it automatically makes that part more interesting.

I am serious.
As i said it's a good place to guy to understand the history of the sport (and then also go and see vale tudo etc), but if someone told me "hey i just saw this ufc thing on tv and it's quite cool, where should i start digging?" i probably wouldn't send them off to the early ufc days. Same thing if i were to try and sell the sport to a friend.

I kinda agree with kingofcool. There was an innocence to the early days of MMA that is lost today. Back then the sport was based on can a wrestler beat a boxer? etc. etc. Now that we know how the sport has evolved that element is gone.
Royce Gracie was the one fighter that really got me hooked on mma. I legitamately thought back then he was the baddest man alive LOL seeing this little guy beat up 3 guys in one night.

You can go back for history to see how the sport has evolved but if someone was asking me where to start to get interested in mma, I wouldn't reccommend the early days either.

this exactly. you can't not be inspired by him in those early days, and you just want to see more. it makes the 'boring' bits of mma interesting.

if you just show two guys beating the crap out of each other, that will cause interest at first but it won't last because when that doesn't happen every fight it will be a disappointment.

i would start by watching highlight videos of

jon jones
rampage jackson
anderson silva
frankie edgar
jose aldo

once you see some of the more exciting guy's highlights you can probably start to watch some of their fights

I would stay away from gsp fights because even though he is a great fighter and very technical his fights tend to be longer and more boring. If you don't know what's going on they could be a turn off to the uneducated fan.

His highlight reels contain most of his older stuff though, back when he was pretty exciting so wouldn't hurt to watch those.

Okay, so I stayed up until 5am to watch Lesnar/Overeem and was massively disappointed. Was I the only one?

I gather there's another UFC PPV soon, I guess I'll pay more attention to the undercard on that one.

It wasn't great, but Overeem's Liver kick was awesome. 142 is on the 14th and the ME is a title bout, plus Vitor and Palhares are fighting.

Honestly, he probably wouldn't hurt himself to watch Liddell highlights either. Tito Ortiz would be good as well.

That's the problem with any sport, even the biggest fights/matches can disappoint. If you only watched the main event though you missed out on two exciting knockouts, and both Hettes and Diaz putting on a masterclass in grappling and boxing respectively. One of the great things about the UFC is that they always put on a quality undercard and you're missing out if you only watch the main.

they have been showing ufc unleashed on fox sports now dono if europeans have access to that, would assume so

Last edited by pageh656; 01-02-2012 at 05:13 PM. Reason: best way to enjoy/learn mma imo besides googling a ton of fighters names and watching all their fights

it was the FOTN imo, but cerrone looked like **** the whole way, and the 3rd round was sloppy.

It's hard to look good when you get hit in the face 220 times.

Lets you build love/hate for a bunch of fighters to get you started. Then just watch a lot of shows, starting either with pride or ufc 50-60~ or even later if you don't care about the older stuff.
+1
it also helps understanding wtf they are doing, if you are not familiar with all the techniques. I have competed in kickboxing myself and was absolutely clueless wtf was going on in MMA once it got to the ground. it just looked funny but I didn't really understand who was doing what and who was trying to get into what position to do what. After having watched the 1st season I had a better understanding and could actually enjoy watching fights even more.

Another tip is whenever you read that "This UFC PPV is a weak/boring card" make sure you watch it because those are the ones that always deliver.
