i saw you put him above Kawada earlier and didn't want to say anything because to each their own. Just in Japan there are at least 10 people that are so much better than Mutoh that i can name in a few seconds (the Funks, Hansen, Jumbo, Kawada, Misawa, Taue, Kobashi, Akiyama, Tenryu, Hashimoto, Baba, and the list goes on i'm sure) <--- 12 people...even Tanahashi now.
Like you said, to each their own. Mutoh is personally my favorite wrestler of all-time, but objectively speaking, I don't know what more any one person could accomplish than he has.
I'm not saying from a purely wrestling ability standpoint he's on the same level as any of the people you mentioned, because he's not, but pro wrestling is more than just about great wrestling. Mutoh is just plain entertaining when he's in a wrestling arena, whether it's from a wrestling standpoint, or ring psychology aspects, or the non-sensical antics, or the theatrical entrances, or the spectacle of his various costumes through the Muta years.
Even if you were to isolate his puro career and didn't account for his worldwide impact and legacy, I still think he's only behind Tsuruta, Misawa, Tenryu, and maybe Kobashi as far as puro greatness goes.
Also, being popular with casual fans is a good thing.
