The Day I Influenced a WWF Match and TV The Day I Influenced a WWF Match and TV

In 1994, my interest in wrestling was fading. But, the WWF was doing its TV taping at the Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA where I lived. I had been to many events there, including TV tapings for the WWF (in their slow early '90s) as well as International Championship Wrestling (ICW) in 1985 and 1986. It was easy and relatively cheap to get really good seats- often front row.

My friend Ed and his brother wanted to go so he picked up tickets for the three of us. He made a point of getting tickets close to where the wrestlers came out from the locker rooms. It's a good location when the first few rows are sold out (and I think Ed was a bit late in buying the tickets).

Ed was a fan of the tag team champions, the Quebecers, Jacques Rougeau and Pierre (Carl Ouellet). I found their goofy mountie-inspired gimmick funny and appreciated a unique ring style by Ouellet.

Ed had acquired a couple of small Canadian flags and we brought them to the arena to show our support. The intention was to simply wave them around and have a silly fun time. Instead, a moment of inspiration took hold of me.

When the Quebecers were announced and came down the aisle, my friend was waving his flag in support. However, I decided to hold mine out as far as I could and repeatedly said "Take this flag. Take this flag." Just as Pierre passed by, he stepped back and grabbed my flag. Then, he took the other from my friend and brought both flags to the ring with him.

The two Canadian flags then made constant appearances before, during, and after the match. Every few years, I search for the match on You Tube and finally found it last night.

After seeing the match on the weekly syndicated Superstars of Wrestling, I thought the Quebecers my continue to use little flags as a prop going forward.

Unfortunately, I never saw them do it again and it may be my fault. As the Quebecers returned to the locker room (not seen on TV), I asked for the flags back and got them.

Awesome story. Quebecers are one of my favorite tag teams of all-time and certainly my favorite of that period. Their one of the first teams/wrestlers where I realized I was supposed to root against them because they were "bad guys" but I loved all the moved they were doing - which was so much more than most teams at the time - and I just found myself rooting for them week after week.

Cool story.

Funny enough, The Quebecers were in one of my favorite angles. When The Headshrinkers organically turned face because the crowd saw how awesome they were and The Quebecers kept dodging them and getting countout or dq losses. An angle that culminated on RAW in a match where it was something like "if they get counted out or dq'ed they lose the belts". Headshrinkers won in a great match. Such a simple story line but my 12 year old mind loved it and I still love it.

Liked the story and I've always liked Mr. Rougeau.

Fav. Rougeau story (@ around 8:30, but the whole thing is good for context):

Jacques Rougeau is one of the more underrated wrestlers of the modern era. He was really, really good. I remember absolutely loving all of his comedy stuff after losing to Boss Man in a "loser goes to jail" match. He also could work, and was legit tough.

Agree with all of this except for the legit tough. He openly admits his brother is the tough one in the family, and goes into detail about how nervous and uneasy he was leading up to the Dynamite Kid incident

Yep just watched this period on the network, it was so well done

Then they lost the tag belts to Shawn and Deisel the day before SummerSlam for some BS reason, then Samu disappeared and was replaced by the Barbarian and they just weren't the same
