Here's a cool tribute to Hennig just released today, Scott Hall talking about his time tagging with Hennig and then about his WWE and WCW runs as well.

It is absolutely stunning to see how much Hall has recovered just in the way he speaks. He's completely lucid and intelligible now. Incredible improvement

Awesome. Loved the part where the fan said he needed to get a new partner because Curt was holding him down.

Looking high and low, I simply could not find this title win anywhere on video…but on January 18, 1986, about seven weeks after the non-title win that Curt and Scott scored over Garvin & Regal, they got a rematch with the titles on the line and won the belts.

This is a phantom match. It never actually happened.

Regal left the AWA suddenly (as often happened with AWA wrestlers) and the belts were simply given to Hennig and Hall.

The Match: Sorry to disappoint, but this Steve Regal isn't the same man who wrestled as Steven Regal in WCW and then William Regal in WWE. He's some other guy. This is the Jimmy Garvin of Freebirds fame though.

Hennig quickly falls into face-in-peril mode. As Garvin works him over, Regal undoes the turnbuckle pad in his corner from the apron. I'm supposing that will come into play later, but in the meantime Hennig gets busted open by Garvin. I couldn't see an obvious blading spot so it could have been hard way.

Curt finally makes the hot tag to Hall. Hall fights back and forth with Regal, but at a point when the referee gets distracted, Garvin takes some sort of signature spray bottle from Precious and goes to spray it in Hall's eyes. Hall escapes and Regal gets blinded by it instead. Hall delivers a running bulldog and gets the 1-2-3 for a big pop.

Result: Curt Hennig & Scott Hall via pinfall when Hall pins Regal (9:30)

Rating: Not a technical classic, but not too bad. The crowd was certainly into it and it was a good way to test run Hennig & Hall as future champions. 2 stars out of 5.

It may interest you to watch this match another way- with Scott hall commentating decades later. Hall is a big fan of Hennig.

Considering his problems with alcohol, "Last Call With Scott Hall" seems like a title in poor taste

For me Curt's best run by some distance was in the AWA circa 87-8. He won the belt and turned heel and worked as "Cool Curt" and it's definitely the best stretch of his career. The best match is his hour draw against Nick Bockwinkel shortly before that heel turn. Bona-fide five-star effort and easily the best match in AWA history.

The problem when he moved to WWF is that, for some reason, Hennig loses all his offense. I quite dig the insane cannonball bumping style he developed, which a lot of people think is ridiculous, but it's the feather-lite offense that gets me.

I mean literally he does a knee lift, a flying mare, a drop kick and that's about it. Kind of weird to have a heel who has nothing to do in his heat sequences. He also doesn't have many good matches in his WWF run.

I think LKJ somewhat overrated that Bret match which gets talked about. I'd have it around 3.5. I mean it's good, but nowhere near the nigh-classic status some people talk about it. I quite like some of the babyface stuff in 93, but it's short lived. Then he's kinda crap for years in WCW.

Some people are very high on babyface Hennig in AWA 82-6. I much prefer the heel persona and style of work from 87-8, but I'd likely take babyface Curt over the Mr. Perfect run. Just a lot more substance there. Pretty good match with Stan Hansen too.
