Yes. I mean it's a weird comparison because Piper-Adonis is carried more by things like great atmosphere and storytelling (though the action in it is good too IMO) and this tag match's quality was almost purely in its action, but...yes.

i'm really just having a hard time thinking of better WWE tag matches. there's obviously a small handful that are right up there (the ones i mentioned and the one you just mentioned) but i don't think calling it a top 10 WWE tag match of all time is crazy. but i think you must given your rating.
Like I didn't find it to be particularly up to the level of the 6-man tags between the Shield and the Wyatts, for instance. I realize that you're not trying to compare it to 6-man stuff, but I would think that THAT elite of a tag team match would easily be at least as good as those if not better.

Five stars is something that should be a super rare rating IMO. Not sure how many matches I give it to all-time, but it has to be a low number, since I actively look for reasons not to give that rating out.

As far as what would constitute a top 10 all-time tag match, not really sure. I'd have to give that more thought. When I think of best WWE tag matches my first thought that comes to mind is the Austin/HHH vs. Benoit/Jericho match I named above, and again I don't think that this one was anywhere particularly close to that one.

I have yet to see a better American tag match than Canadians vs. TMPT. Just watched last week. The crowd is amazing. On their feet for nearly the entire match. Attitude era rocked.

I have over 70 with the majority being AJPW and then pretty equal between ROH/PWG/NJPW/WWE. Here's my WWE list:

Steamboat vs Savage - WM III
Bret vs Perfect - SummerSlam 1991
Owen vs Bret - WM X
HBK vs Razor - WM X
Bret vs Austin - WM 13
Edge/Rey vs Angle/Benoit - No Mercy 2002
Punk vs Cena - MitB 2011
Angle vs Austin - SummerSlam 2001
HBK vs Undertaker - WM 25
TLC II
TLC III
HBK vs Benoit vs HHH - WM 20
Austin/HHH vs Benoit/Jericho - 5/21/01

13 5-star matches spanning nearly 30 years is pretty reasonable IMO, especially since almost 20 of the years have featured monthly PPVs.

Not sure I could find 13, but I'd have to give that more thought.

I think I somehow haven't seen two of your five-star matches. Really need to remedy that.

angle austin ending always bothered me because he was so near the ropes he had to consciously avoid touching them as he tapped out. match was obviously excellent though

Shot in the dark:

1. Austin/Angle
2. TLC III

that match happened at the ppv after SummerSlam. SummerSlam ending makes the match or breaks it for most people. Wouldn't be surprised if you or LKJ didn't like it.

I remember loving Austin/Angle but it's been a really long time. I can't rate it off the top of my head as I'm not sure I've seen it more than once.

TLC III was correct, the No Mercy tag match was the other that I don't believe I've seen.

I immediately know I'd throw on a couple of matches that you don't like as well as I do, the Canadian Stampede 10-man tag and HBK-Angle from WM XXI. But we have a fair bit of overlap.

unfortunately I realized where our Rollins/Ambrose fantasy booking would quickly end up:

Rollins walks into Subway, where of course WWE's good friend Jared is. After a few disparaging remarks to Jared, Rollins tries to order something only to be told they're out of Italian bread. He flips out and asks for the manager, who is of course Ambrose, who beats him senseless and then sits down at a corner table with Santino (with twelve subs, all on Italian bread) and Jared.

I somehow left Rock/Austin from WM X-7 off my list. Perhaps it warrants a rewatch but that is incredible. From the promo to going off the air is epic.

Go watch that No Mercy tag, you'll be happy you did

I like the Canadian Stampede match. Just not all that high on it for ratings. It's a fun watch though. Loathe that Michaels/Angle match as you know.

Great sell by Cena to have his head up during the pin, eyes wide open and making sure the Kane-save was on its way after getting superman-punched and speared...

Meltzer ratings, disko was wondering about these earlier.

Quote:
1. Adam Rose vs Fandango - DUD
2. Cameron vs Naomi - DUD
3. Usos vs Wyatts (2 out of 3 falls) - ****
4. AJ Lee vs Paige - 1/2*
5. Rusev vs Jack Swagger - *1/2
6. Chris Jericho vs Bray Wyatt - **1/2
7. The Battle Royal - **3/4
8. John Cena vs Roman Reigns vs Randy Orton vs Kane - ***1/4
Don't know how he found that high of a rating for the main event, but the rest looks reasonable to me even though I'd differ slightly here and there.

I'd switch the Rusev/Swagger and Byatt/Jericho ratings. Otherwise, I'm fine with it. Main event was fine enough for a 4-way that nobody really cared about.

Yeah that Rusev/Swagger rating seems low given what the match needed to do and accomplished. Also, Rusev sells so well. When is that last time a guy carried an injury from the match into the post-match?

I'd maybe bump Rusev/Swagger up a little too, though I do remember that the thread was digging that match a bit more than I was. Still, it did the job well enough that I'm hoping on a sequel at SummerSlam.

I'd also probably give a full three stars to the battle royal just because the Ziggler/Sheamus stuff was great.

I actually thought Rusev and Swagger did a pretty decent job considering neither guy compliments the other. I don't mind the other scores apart from the main event.
