Re: 'Nevada Sets Stage for Online Poker' - WSJ

I'm not quite sure simply posting a link even meets NVG's standards, let alone Poker Headlines.

As a thread saver, I suspect that firms like Caesars are willing to have a NV only website as a loss leader simply to get the experience of running a site in the US. I agree that 25k people aren't nearly enough to support one poker site, let alone a couple of sites.

Not to derail the thread, but I'm wondering if having a modified skin system might overcome the federal law. For example, Caesars could set up a skins that covers NV, CA, DC and NJ individually including the transactions in and out of the state site. If capitalized adequately, imbalances in overall state results could be absorbed for a significant amount of time without transferring funds across state. At the same time, players could play against someone from another state. That would allow for a website to have sufficient depth, and allow a state to control who and how people people add money while taxing individually.

Obviously, Caesars would be counting on a Balkanized system lasting for a limited amount of time.

The Nevada Gaming Commission approved the nation’s first regulations for Internet poker play today, opening the door to the licensing of companies to offer online play within the state.

(d) That the individual has been informed and has acknowledged that, as an authorized player, they are prohibited from engaging in interactive gaming from a state or foreign jurisdiction in which interactive gaming is illegal and that the operator is prohibited from allowing such interactive gaming;

Do I understand that correctly, that if you derivate the ide a little, you can see that if it will be regulated statewide, there will be no blocks for foreign players?

While the "only intrastate" regulations are in place, I wonder about the viability of "ipoker terminals" within the casino, using space previously occupied by slots/video poker. There'd be some logistical issues to deal with, since your screen couldn't be visible to passerby, but I can see this working out great--set up little booths near big poker rooms like Aria, and people can play online while they wait for their seat in a live game. Then the casino controls the interface, so no HUDs, no bots (probably), and they can set the max tables at 4 or whatever if they wish to.

And on the logistics tip, a Rush-poker format would be just about perfect, since it wouldn't matter much if your cards were visible to onlookers. Yeah...this is a potential monster for casinos.
