After a seven-year trial, Amsterdam's court dismissed charges against three men accused of violating the national gambling law with a verdict that finds poker to be "first and foremost a game of skill, not of chance".

The decision has been based on research conducted by a group of independent experts and, although it is still too early to understand how this will change the poker industry’s future in the Netherlands, is a significant step towards the legalization of the game, according to Amsterdam-based lawyer Peter Plasman.

Right after the verdict was made public, PokerNews contacted Mr. Plasman and discussed with him the ruling and its possible consequences for Dutch poker players.

Something that takes most thinking people a mere moment to figure out, takes the court system 7 years....

At least they didn't end up saying that poker is not a game of skill after a 7 year debate, that would have been comical.

I really hope it stays the same as it is now. Don't wanna have the rake very high for tax purposes or a seperate pokerstars.nl.

I think that poker in its current state is a skillgame. When u 'studied' it for 3 months you have an edge on a lot of 2nl players. But when all recreational player would be taken out of the player pools, the skill aspect would be very marginal. I think poker is more an idiot dependent game. If no idiots, the only winners are the online 'casino's'..

The whole prosecution took 7 years because it did not have priority at the Dutch prosecutor. Which might make some sense because their are more severe cases to be looked after. There was not a seven year debate.

Believe me: (Dutch) courts aren't populated by non thinking people.

Really 7 years?!!!??

Here is something that is backwords. In the United States betting on Horse Races like the Kentucky Derby is legal and even promoted. There is absolutely no skill in guessing which horse out of 20 will win a race.

Yet in poker every situation has a calculated mathematical outcome which smart people and players assess in order to determine which action to pursue. This requires countless hours of practicing, continuous learning, and many other critical thinking decisions that go into a game of skill.... But it is still illegal in the States because the people in Washington need to be able to tax this to get a slice of the pie.

Excerpt:
The government of VVD (conservative liberal) en PvdA (social democrats) came to an agreement: in 2015 online gambling will be legal, at sites that are authorized. The goal is to have 80% of the 800.000 online Dutch gamblers on these legal sites. In negotiations the big issue was the tax rate. In the state owned casino this was 29%. The rate for online gambling is now set to 20%. This will prevent people from choosing illegal sites. The organization of online gambling companies would still rather want the rate to be set at 10%.

By legalizing gambling addiction can be battled better, the government hopes.

The state owned Casino, which had been losing money for year, will be privatized.

Did they study plo also, rake included? Nlh has passed the test of time on every limit and game type, except maybe tournament that should still be considered gambling, and nlh cash wont get any tougher, and still skill dominates, meaning green grass. But plo should still be considered gambling, like the terrible stud horse was in the past till proved or argued to be a game of skill like draw poker. Plo is soon getting tougher and already at zoom, at tight plo, the green grass is smoked rather than feeding the hungry.
