Why do pro poker players coach ?

I've always wondered why do pro poker players make videos, books or coach for money ? they earn so much yet they need an "extra job" ?

Re: Why do pro poker players coach ?

-variance-free money
-coaching improves your own game
-some do it for pleasure
-some want to give back to the poker community

training/coaching has hurt the game tremendously.

Not exactly. This has always been around/available in some form.

What has hurt the game is smart college kids crushing the game, inspiring other smart kids to crush the game and in turn get motivated determined average/dumb people to crush the game. If you know it's possible, it makes it easier to accomplish. Certainly no one would call nano's 5 million hands a run of good luck.

These are the big 4 reasons I think.

I think variance free money is the biggest.

Also, some are liars and aren't that good.

What else can poker players do to make money? I've seen quite a few guys that work out at my gym become personal trainers. It's an easy transition if they're interested in that field and there is a market for it.

Teaching is also a method of learning.

Those who can - do. Those who can't - teach.

Re: Why do pro poker players coach ?

Obviously, the answer to OP's question is "variance free money".

But I would caution people not to assume that all this "coaching" really improves the player pool that much. First of all, it's simply really really hard to learn how to play poker really well. It takes a lot more than some coaching-- it takes real study and a lot of practice.

Second, my bet is that at least some coaches are providing bad advice.

WHAT?! LOL

There is no "giving back" to "the poker community." I guess, that's what we'd call dumping and losing streaks? We're a subculture, not a community. The whole idea is to take as much you can from "the community."

Your first three points are dead on, though.

This made me laugh. How do you know how much they earn?
