What is meant by an Asian? Asia is the entire land mass east of Europe and includes the Arab Middle East, India, Russia, and the Far East, plus Indonesia.

I am aware of the recent ridiculous phenomena wherein people of many races, regions and colors seek to shed long accepted terminology and redefine themselves.

This type of nonsense ought to be roundly rejected; but political correctness, and cultural sensitivities born from the guilt of slave trading and ownership precludes it for now.

Asian can mean almost anything. Therefore, it means almost nothing.

I suspect you mean Oriental, or Far Eastern to those pseudo-intellectual revisionist nits who unilaterally decided Oriental was derogatory.

The best button tell I ever saw was a blatant one from a Swedish internet semi-pro trying to make it big at live. If he was going to play his cards he'd freeze but if he was going to fold he'd tap his cards with his index finger every time. Very nice as I was on his right. Double button tables for the win!

I have never beaten or seen someone beat a person who raised and stated "If you got me, you got me..."

Also I was watching Antonio Esfandiari brain dump on WSOP live streaming coverage. Guy gets up out of his seat after going all-in. Antonio says "that always means he has a big hand or the nuts. He has so much nervous energy he just can't sit still". So its half a year later and I am in a tourney and I have a huge hand but not the nuts and the other guy goes all-in and gets up out of his chair. And I remember seeing Antonio Esfandiari talk about this but for the life of me I can't remember whether it means he is super strong or super weak. Which I say out loud to the guy next to me and it reminds me that the guy is super strong, so I fold, and villain turns over the absolute nuts.
This goes both ways. I have actually done this twice. Both times was a stone cold bluff for a huge pot and I was all-in. I clearly remember the first time. After I pushed with absolutely nothing (don't ask why, I don't know) I was trying to set still and not give anything off. I actually thought I was going to throw up. I finally had to get up and get away before I exploded. The other dude folded. I pissed myself.

Re: What tells do you notice about other players?

This is a really great thread. I know it has been implied elsewhere but more important than looking for "tells" in each and every instance, it is important to pay really close attention to the table to just get a good feel for how people play and their patterns etc. Sometimes you will pick up very subtle feels for what players are doing in a hand and you will be able to use this information later.

I am really good at remembering faces and remembering players that I play with for the next time I see them. Something that I have been experimenting lately with is this: when I am playing with a player who I have never played with before, and I am in a situation that it would be really helpful if I had some more information or some more reads, I try to think about other players that this random player reminds me of and try to think of what their doppelganger would do in that situation. Some of my buddies think this is crazy but in situations where I can call or fold 50/50 without a read or whatever the case may be I have been trying to play the doppelganger game to choose. There is a limited sample size but so far it actually seems like it is a profitable strategy (anybody else ever do this?).

I think that there is a lot to be said about stereotyping and intuition about peoples' appearance at a poker table. I guess its something that is politically incorrect but there is often value in it. Maybe just figure it out for yourself and don't really say anything about it. Obviously, for every general rule there is an exception that could very well cost you your stack.

Not the same quote, but the same meaning, except he did lose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XunAlp2azhA

Re: What tells do you notice about other players?

Tells are usually not that important in low stakes casino games where you only see players for a short time and likely not ever or rarely play them again! They are more important at tables where you have the same players more or less each time. Home games, underground card rooms and higher stakes casino tables! It's easier to verify tells if you get to see them repeated enough times. In the other games only the most outrageous tells are worth considering, most of the times. There are always exceptions once in a while.

The hands shaking. It's the first tell you hear about and it's easily the most prevalent at low stakes. Mind you it doesn't work on experienced players. Also, the villain has to actually have hands, which isn't always the case.

The best tell that I know of is when someone is in the process of dying right in front of me. It means they will have great trouble calling my bet.

poker tells are hard- i think sometimes you can tell on certain people but its definately a challenge with some people with hoodies and glasses.

For the hoodies and glasses crowd, try gauging how interested they are in a hand.

Last session I had someone who was probably a decent online player to my right. He was being a bit of a jerk, always trying to see people's cards when they wanted to muck, playing chicken at showdown, like he was some kind of poker genius and he was going to analyze every card shown and put every other player on precise ranges every hand.

This same player would play games on his cell phone during the hand unless he had the nuts (Took me about two hands to spot that one.)

Bit of an extreme example but there you have it. As is often the case at LLSNL, your opponents have the tools (hoodie + sunglasses), but no clue how to use it (TO HIDE YOUR FREAKIN' TELLS)
