Most intelligent poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

One time when I was playing 1/3 NLHE at an Indian casino and a man was discussing parallel universes and black holes. I thought he was crazy, but once he actually started to state and write down equations and make incredible metaphors I realized he was a genius! This thinking was the furthest away from absurd!

Listened to a guy making Nietzche jokes for about half an hour. Was pretty glad when I busted out of the tourney.

A guy was explaining to me why the US will not go into a hyper-inflationary state in the near future , and in fact how yields will go down to record lows. This was when I was still awash in Fannie mae and indymac/countrywide short money. wish i listened to him.

Re: Most intelligent poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

True story - Around late 2005-early 2006 I was sitting next to a guy who started talking about the real-estate boom. He said it was definitely a bubble and we were close to the top. He said a crash was coming because the paper backing all the eazy-mortgages was worthless. He used a few terms I had never heard and said a few things I didn't understand at the time.

He told me he had just sold his house because he was going to rent for a couple of years, wait for the bust, then buy another house for 50% off. I thought he was bat-**** crazy.

Re: Most intelligent poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

I took a seat on a 1/2nl at the MGM vegas about 3 years ago. The topics of conversation went from apple software developments to its share prices to quantum physics to political gains and how certain politicians were doing and there histories and foreign government history ect ect... Everyone at the table just seemed super insightful on every studious subject under the sun, and everyone was joining in. It was like sitting with a bunch of harvard professors im not exaggerating !

It made me feel quite inadequate cus anytime anyone asked me a question I spewed out a dumb uninformed answer and I knew it lol. I found it very tilting. I sat there for a couple of orbits or so and lost most of my 150bb buyin before I finally got my table change. The next table was the polar opposite ! I have never been so glad to see a bunch of dumb effers in my life.

I actually ended up having a monster session that night, but oh boy I have never sat at a table like that or even close to it before or since.

I had that same discussion with a 30yo LV poker regular who was a retired currency trader from some major bank. He said he'd sold all his property and moved all his assets into Asian banks because the US real estate market was about to collapse and when it did collapse it had every possibility of taking the economies of all the western countries down with it. He believed every major bank was going to go under and it'd be worse than the Great Depression.

Obviously he was crazy! What loon would predict something that insane.

I haven't seen him around in a few years. Perhaps he was just passing the time in Vegas playing poker while he waited for the apocalypse and when it came and went without the world exploding he headed back out into the real world. Wish I'd heeded his advice, though.

But it is to try and hijack a thread for political "I told you so's." While I can appreciate the support for Paul, this isn't the place to trot it out.

Re: Most intelligent poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Somehow I thought this thread was gonna be about intelligent poker thinking that had been overheard at the table. My initial response was gonna be that it isn't intelligent to discuss intelligent poker at the table so I'm only mildly dissapointed in the discussion itt.

That could have been me.. I was on that spiel from time to time in 06-07. stupid ex sold the house i bought for cash , then bought a BIGGER one , even though i kept advising her not to. she basically lost the 200k she put down on the joint and then some.

A few live players were discussing how they play KK different on Stars the other day because the A always flops... seems solid
