Really enjoyable. Thanks for giving us a peek into the life. Sent this thread to a few friends, and they really liked it as well.

I've only ever had one customer that blew up on me..

$5 bj table (3 spots are playing) and this guy is losing about $5k.

"Hey, I see you're not wearing a name tag. So I can call you whatever I want, right?"

"Sure, why not?"

"Then I'm gonna call you Fred Flintstone because you look like him."

"Fair enough."

Now this guy goes on a massive heater. Wins all his money back.

"That's right Fred, pay me!"

The guy is a total stiff.

As I'm being relieved by the next dealer, this other player says "thank you _____ , you're a great dealer." obviously a reg that knew me.

I tap the tip on the rack and say "Thank you sir. That shows some class."

Now the jerk says "**** you Fred! I know you're talking about me, you fat prick!"

I tell the guy "My name is ____ and I was talking to this gentleman, not you. Please watch your mouth. There's a lady at this table and ladies next door."

Now comes the pit manager (ex college football player walking with a crutch - this guy's old school and pretty tough)..

"What's going on here!?"

"Man, **** him! Your dealer made a ****ing comment about me not tipping him! You want some of me, punk!?"

"You need to tell this guy to watch his mouth.. Before I go shut it for him!"

"Yeah, well I'd break that up real fast. Now wait for me at the end of the pit for me so I can talk to you."

"Yeah! Get the **** outta here!"

My final line "If I wanted to take you out, him and the crutch ain't gonna stop me *******) I'll still beat your ass!" and I leave.

My boss "What the **** is wrong with you?"

Me "You should have told the guy to watch his mouth and had me apologize before it got out of hand. I almost went over the table on that guy."

My boss "He's a friend of mine. You're lucky you didn't do that. Then I'd had to jump in."

Me "Like I said.. How are you gonna stop me? With your crutch!?"

My boss (laughs) "You're lucky I have this bum knee or I'd beat your ass right here and now!"

Me "I am lucky. Can I go on break now?"

"Yeah, you'll be on the wheel when you come back."

Shift manager gave me a lol one day suspension the next day.
This was awesome. You can get away with ****-talking back your boss like this once in a while if you're a valuable employee so you must have been a pretty damn good dealer.

Re: Liberation! What? Ask me q's about being a dealer..

I just answered a PM about a fairly common question.

Tips on becoming a casino dealer
(I'm obviously generous with the "tips" )

My 1st suggestion is that you get some practice dealing somewhere 1st. Do they have any casinos close to you? If not, you might have to pay for dealing school. You need to get the hang of pitching cards, dealing from a shoe, cutting chips and paying blackjacks (1.5 to 1 in most places, 6 to 5 in others). It's not hard to learn, but it does take some practice.

You can probably find some instructional type vids on YouTube (or one of those do-it-yourself websites).

And yeah, starting off at a lower paying casino is standard. And yeah, they don't make as much in tips (so yearly, $20k-ish is about right).

But once you get experience under your belt, getting a pay raise just means finding an opening in a better casino. That can obviously take time (and lots of persistence). They don't just "hire anyone".

So.. what are they looking for??

Upbeat personality #1
Experience
Friendliness
"Team players"
GREAT customer service

^ these things will get you further than anything else

What will help you keep your job??

Be on time
LEARN OTHER GAMES*
Don't get into it with your customers (EVER!)
Let your bosses be right (even when they're not)

*Which games are the most important??

Blackjack - like knowing Hold'em.. VERY STANDARD
Craps - THE game (a craps dealer can be taught any other game in minutes.. a regular dealer would need MONTHS to learn to deal craps)
Baccarat (Full, Midi and Mini-baccarat) - this could be a job saver (it's the biggest "action" in most casinos, so not every dealer can handle the pressure)
***
Roulette - next to craps, this game has the hardest math. Can't say it's a job saver, but it's a great game to know.. because..
After PaiGow poker, everything else can be taught in 5 minutes!
EVERY OTHER GAME A HUNGRY CHIMP COULD DEAL IF YOU GAVE HIM A BANANA

The casinos are looking for young, super friendly dealers that deal all of the games. The closer you are to that profile, the better your chances of landing that $60k+ /yr. dealing job.

If you have any other questions, or I missed something, PM me or hit me up in this thread.

S+S

*** I forgot PaiGow Tiles. Hard game to learn (the tiles and names for each tile are in Chinese). It's not a very popular game, but if you can learn it, it looks great on your game resume).

also how to create atmosphere at a table? tips on small talk?

Yup haha.
That guy was probably ace tracking.
If he was a legit AP no way he would be playing a single deck only getting dealt three rounds without other advantages.

I learned to play tiles over the last few years, and there's a few things I "enjoy" seeing when I go to Vegas.

  • I like watching the only two PGT dealers in the casino take turns swapping in and out because nobody else in the casino can deal the game.
  • Everyone once in a while, as a rare treat, I get a non-Asian dealer at that game. One guy was from Eritrea, a country I had to look up. I actually stopped to ask him if he knew he wasn't an Asian woman.
  • Overt Korean on Chinese racism between dealers and players.
Some dealers are TOO good at their job: "NO NO! You have wong, high seven, push!" before I can blink.

Learning to deal PGT if you're non Asian descent is like learning a total different language at first... Game is very hard.
