Anyways, I've had a bit of trouble moving down in stakes, as I often get bored too quickly. I just got a Kindle for the holidays, and was considering bringing it the tables to read while I play (it's allowed as long as I'm not involved in the hand). Is this ridiculously -EV, considering I won't really be paying much attention to the game? I figure 1/2 is mostly a game of nut-peddling anyways... perhaps reading a book will prevent me from limping KTo and other garbage.

thoughts?
I don't think I've ever seen a player reading a book/nook/kindle/magazine etc.
that didn't fail to lose their whole stack.
So if you are at same table as me please read.

Anyone who reads your posts through the Android app sees the above.

And they don't see that it says: [Therefore, I can say a Kindle at the table is +EV] for your villains.

If you want to be a winning player, leave it at home and learn how to play live.

I don't know whether that's supposed to be a joke? But in case anyone was wondering what your post said there it is.

Re: Is a Kindle -EV?

Overall I think this is -EV

Although the argument can be made that the kindle-reading tight image can be used to your advantage, in my experience when you do finally raise light, your tightness goes unnoticed and you're still left w/ 4-5 callers. Doesnt work if they dont fold, right?

But hey, I could be wrong

Sure its -EV. But for me personally I would rather not be bored and catch up on some things on the internet than sit there and wait forever to get a playable hand

Kindles are -EV. Amazon's ability to nuke your books remotely is a big minus.

Get a Nook instead.

This post for me.

Paying attention is an absolute necessity at the table, as others have said. Every single hand brings something new to the table and to your game, regardless of whether you're in it or not. If you do not find learning how to take money from your opponents by watching them play, you may wish to consider finding a new hobby.

Maybe you can also bring name tags to label the players so you can focus on your book without having to keep track of who is who. You can hand out labels like 'tag', 'nit', 'drunk', 'erick lindgren', etc.

Re: Is a Kindle -EV?

I would bet most of these guys saying leave the Kindle don't read books anyway!!!

If you are a winning player, the Kindle is not going to affect your bottom line, provided you are also paying attention to the flow of the game.

If you can multi-table online while also surfing the web, you can read during your session. You are going to "appear" tighter, but in the end the only ones paying attention will notice if you are tight whether you are reading or not!

Some people enjoy music to distract them, others read. I have the Kindle App on my phone and have read poker books during sessions...lol.

Re: Is a Kindle -EV?

I don't even like to change songs on my ipod while i'm grinding live... IMO you should be paying attention to every little thing at the table until you feel somewhat drained, then you take a break, get some food, take a walk. Maybe even cash out and take an hour break until you can get back into your grinding zone. The more you practice this, the longer you can maintain A game sessions. There is no way you can pick up on tells, betting habits, etc while reading a book.

I'm also glad to see people's opinion about sunglasses, hope people think this of me when i have the hood up and glasses on at the table . When you wear them your opponents aren't aware that you are observing closely!

Re: Is a Kindle -EV?

TBH I think both Kindle and IPod are -EV. I have them both and allways leave them at home when I go grinding live. That's because such items make you appear too serious about the game (or douchy), and make fish play better against you. When playing live you definitely want to pay attention when not in the hand and socialize with other players.
