Interestingly, until relatively recently, this would be acceptable. You could even go back to your stack multiple times, provided your intent to raise was made clear. Your bet was finished when you came to rest.

I know of one poker room that still operates this way. This is the California Grand in Pacheco, California, which has been the site of poker games since being a stagecoach stop in the last half of the 19th century.

I agree it makes sense logically, but that's not how it runs in practice. The vast majority of the time people say "raise ##" (even without a pause), they mean total, not more.

Here's an extreme example, happened just a few days ago. Dealing a tournament, blinds are 75/150. SB doesn't have change, so he puts out a single black (100) chip. Action limps around to him, he says "raise 450" (no pause) and adds a 500 chip, for 600 total in front of him. I stop and ask what his TOTAL bet is. He says "450". I kick back the 100, make appropriate change for the 500 once action is complete, and he's satisfied with the result.

Pictures beat TLDRS. Well done.

Lol @ people actually thinking this piece of **** promotion of shady behavior should actually get serious responses.

Why are you sending this crap here Panini? Many of us know that this promotion of questionable behavior would't fly in any forum on 2+2.

With your record of strict moding, at what point would you deem this promotion of shady behavior **** acceptable? AT NO POINT.

Why send it here then? Whats your plan?

What are you saying about this forum when sending this ****?

Are you saying, or trying to foster an opinion, that this forum is a "zoo-like" version of B&M?

It seems to me that is the case.

Because the question, no matter how misguided, sparked a reasonable discussion with good information.

Seriously though, if you want to discuss moderation, there's a sticky and I'll gladly talk it to death -- just ask around.

[And a quick note, in moderation-orange(tm) - if you want to fight with Rapini, I suggest a PM.]

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot

If I chose to speak up in this situation it wouldnt be because of the strength of my hand, but more for clarity so I dont have to worry about some fish ****ing up his bets causing confusion over and over again. It's a simple rule to make a clear bet size, and if someone consistently fails to do that I'm going to have the dealer correct him every time, even if my intention was to fold. No different than string betting, or trying to recall a bet entirely. You're doing it wrong, so do it right.

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot

Is this what we have become? Instead of denouncing angles and angle shooting, we are now devising potential new ones?

Angle shooting is for people that are not able to win legitimately.

Keep reading the forums and you may learn how to actually win. That would be a better way to spend your time.

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot

Wow, on a scale of 1-10 this angle shot is a luke warm meh 2 at best.

Seriously, I could crap a better angle shot.

One of the best angle shots I ever saw was in a 2/5nl game, effective stacks $3K.

V1 was ABC player, V2 was crafty old veteran.

V1 limps UTG, V2 raises to $25, V1 l/rr to $100, V2 calls.

Flop(200) 2 K 3 r
V1 bets 100, V2 raises 200, V1 reraises 400, V2 calls.

Turn(800) A
V1 bets 600, V2 calls

River(2000) K
V1 yells, "All in" for $2K

The old crafty Villain says, "Ha, I finally got you!" and he turns over his hand, AK.
V1 then says, "No good!" and turns over AA

old villain says, "I never said call."

V1 is livid and of course the floor is called, the scenario is explained and the floor rules that Old V never said call so its not a call.

great angle shot.

Lesson to be learned noobs, never table your cards until money is in the pot and calls have been declared using the only binding verbal declaration, "I call"

Accept no substitute

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot

hi OP. i, too, have thought of a good angle shoot that i would like to share. what you do is when you get dealt your cards, you look at them and say "oh my, i have pocket aces!" loud enough for the whole table to hear. then you act embarrassed and go "shoot, i didn't mean to say that out loud. now everyone knows i have pocket aces! darn it!" now for the rest of the hand, your opponents will think you have pocket aces. oh one more thing, if you actually do have pocket aces then say a different hand. best of luck!

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot

I was just thinking of an angle after a recent live 1/2 sesh. You're shuffling some chips, whites/stray reds and a couple greens... greens are key. It's a limped pot and you're dealt AK+... define range as necessary, tigher/looser.. one limp, two limps whatever you toss out a white and green and put on an act as if you just meant to call. Huff, puff, sigh.. whatever - someone's going to come over the top with the most absurd range known to man, and then kick your ass when you pwn him with your monster, or laugh when the deck smacks you in the face.

Obviously a greasy angle and I'd have to have a solid buzz on/right table conditions to try.. but this would work, big time. Could the floor do anything if the pot goes to show down and you have KK+?

There's another one that NOBODY has ever thought of! Guaranteed to work, too, since nobody will have seen it before.

Aside: I saw someone wager $101 a few days ago when intending to limp for $2. It wasn't an angle, he really did goof and grab a black and a blue rather than two blues. He was trying to snatch the black back in mid-air. It did hit the felt but he had it back in his stack within a fraction of a second and began pleading his case. He was allowed to take it back and put $2 in instead.

So sometimes your "huff, puff" will actually be accepted and ruin your oh-so original angle.

It also did have the happy side-effect of showing the table that he had a $100 black chip hidden in his stacks. I had only sat down like three hands prior and had NO idea it was there... it was apparently at the bottom of his blues, behind his reds, thoroughly hidden and camouflaged. I had this ever-so-slight inkling to demand the $101 stand just because it irked me to find out he'd been hiding $100, but no, I did not.

This angle made me sick to my stomach. I like the guy next to the angler. He wanted to rip his head off. I don't promote violence, ever, but I wanted to see that angler judo-chopped.

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot

LOL at all the people criticizing OP in this thread. I'm sure they're just jealous at all the angle-shooters who take their money. I can tell you 100% that if they were good enough at angle-shooting to earn a profit, they'd be shooting angles with the pros.

Angle-shooting is defined as an action that is not against the rules - that means it's fair game, end of story. I'm sick of all the people acting high and mighty over people who are just trying to support themselves. Not everyone has the poker skills of Hellmuth or Ivey, some people need to angle shoot to feed their families. Learn to protect yourself so it doesn't work on you, but don't try to take away the rights of others to do what they need to do to accumulate EV.
