I thought of a good angle shoot
Let's say you want to raise $60
Say verbally "raise $65" then when you're putting out the chips, say "I mean $60"
Then see what your opponent's reaction is. If they demand you put the extra money in then it probably means they're strong.

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot
I'm pretty sure its aimed at judging the strength of your opponents hand, not saving or betting an extra 5 bucks. Also, after you do it like twice everyone is gonna realize what you're doing.
Plus, most players are gonna realize how they sound when they demand you put more money in. If anything, they might do it to just sound stronger.
Crappy angle shoot that is not going to work and just get people pissed at you.

There is no such thing as "a good angle shoot".

Comments like that are going to get you put on double secret probation.
What good players realize over time is that angle shots like you propose work once against a player.
However, this is a truly stupid angle shot. Most of the time, the other player couldn't give a **** whether you're betting 60 or 65. They are folding. If they have a big hand, they'll let it slide because they don't want to spook you. A good dealer will warn you not to do it again. If you do repeatedly, you'll get tossed out for the night.

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot
here's a better version:
villian bets 10, hero declares: "raise 30", dealer says: "30", villian calls 30 while hero says: "I said raise 30, that's 40 total"
personally, i'm tired just thinking it through... play poker, for gods sake!

Do you mean all three at once; or, are we allowed to parse them individually?

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot
That is a HORRIBLE angle shoot. It just sounds stupid. Imagine a player saying, "I raise $65...ohh...I mean $60." WTF?!? It makes you sound like an idiot and I don't think $5 is a big enough difference to get any reaction out of anyone.
A better angle shoot (although all angle shoots are stupid because they are unethical and they slow down the game) is to say raise $60, start putting chips in by groups of $10, $15, or $20 and then judging by your opponents' reactions either put in $60 total or $60 on top of the original bet. Then if that causes confusion, see what reaction you get from your opponents.
Another cool one is to do the string raise on purpose. You count out $60 in front of you in a room that plays the line only and then put it out $20 at a time. The dealer will stop you and say it's a string raise and you will signal the intention of raising without actually putting the money in and without giving your opponents the opportunity to reraise on that particular street. Just make sure the dealer is smart enough to catch it and won't allow you to keep the money in the pot.
The above mentioned angle shoot is excellent for having a flush draw on the flop in position. I've seen more and more players raise doing the raise a flush draw on the flop in position to get a free turn card move. This would be an awesome opportunity to get the free turn card without raising the pot on the flop and risking more money or risking the reraise from your opponent.

hero is right
"raise 30" = "30 more" = "30 on top" etc = 10+30 = 40
"raise to 30" or "raise.... 30" = "30 to go" = 10+20 = 30 total

Oh, even two at a time is totally fine.

Interestingly, until relatively recently, this would be acceptable. You could even go back to your stack multiple times, provided your intent to raise was made clear. Your bet was finished when you came to rest.
I know of one poker room that still operates this way. This is the California Grand in Pacheco, California, which has been the site of poker games since being a stagecoach stop in the last half of the 19th century.

I agree it makes sense logically, but that's not how it runs in practice. The vast majority of the time people say "raise ##" (even without a pause), they mean total, not more.
Here's an extreme example, happened just a few days ago. Dealing a tournament, blinds are 75/150. SB doesn't have change, so he puts out a single black (100) chip. Action limps around to him, he says "raise 450" (no pause) and adds a 500 chip, for 600 total in front of him. I stop and ask what his TOTAL bet is. He says "450". I kick back the 100, make appropriate change for the 500 once action is complete, and he's satisfied with the result.

A better one would be to release your hand and then quickly slam your hand on the cards and say "oh wait, can I take it back?" and take your hand back which at the Borgata is perfectly within the rules to do. Yeah, I've had people do that to me on more than one occasion over the past year. **** rule imo. It's the same premise as extending your arm out with chips in your hand and then pulling them back, i don't understand why there's a distinction between chips and cards.

Re: I thought of a good angle shoot
LOL at the OP. Try that to get a read on your opponent, and before your opponent can blink, at least six players who don't have cards will jump out of their chairs, seizing the opportunity to correct someone, and make them do things "the right way". This happens every single time in this spot, even if the opponent in question only has $20 left in his stack and the distinction between $60 and $65 is totally meaningless.
