I do understand this, but it's counter-productive to having a juicy, sustainable game. People get so excited to finally be able to talk about poker with someone who is also able to talk about it, and I do empathize with that mindset. But they put on blinders and don't realize how much the action is drying up around them. These tables tend to break the soonest. Or they get shorthanded, and these poker wonks start complaining that there aren't any fish. I see it time and time again.

The first rule of poker is that you don't talk about poker.

It's a lonely hobby.

When you complain about there "not being enough money" in the pot and that you are getting "bored playing for such small pots" so you try to get a mandatory straddle going. When I ask why dont we just play 5/10 then, you are bewildered and look at me thoroughly dumbfounded

True story!

But most of the time I just wait until my friend takes a break and we talk strategy away from the table.
And then he fellates you, bro?

I'm sure a lot of these got mentioned but....

*players who ask about the bad beat

*players who joke with each new dealer about dealing the bad beat

*players who get openly giddy about any potential flop or board that would allow for a bad beat.

*players who constantly tip more than 1 dollar

*players who jokingly say "I knew I shouldn't have folded my deuce" on a 222 flop

*players who wait til after the hand to announce that they folded some junk hand preflop that woulda hit a straight or boat

Players that have their poker outfit on complete with ( insert the online poker company) decals all over.

Phil Hellmuth is your favorite player

You ask Phil Hellmuth for strategy advice.

just a thought
This. World's biggest myth is that everyone at the table is going to suddenly become better because two people happen to make conversation for 60 seconds about hand ranges.

Some people enjoy talking about the strategy of the game, especially if they have a friend at the same table who also knows advanced concepts. Considering how utterly miserable table conversation between casual players often ends up being (Star Wars, the economies of Pacific Rim countries, Candy Crush Saga, and the specifics of fixing a damaged septic tank are just a few of the recent gems I've been exposed to), strategy talk can be entertaining and refreshing.

I don't believe this has ever been my claim. This is a strawman.

Its not that they will get better, its the fact that it will turn fish off and they will be less inclined to return nexr time if they are bored listening to poker goobers babble.

You personally, I have no idea, I can't go back and go over all of your posts. It is certainly the claim of many, many other people who have showed up in "strategy talk at the table" threads.

This doesn't really happen. Terrible players do not decide to swear off the game and not show up at a casino the next time around because someone discussed strategy at the table.

They do, however, quiet up, tighten up, and either change tables or leave altogether.

I've seen it time and time again, so you can't tell me that it doesn't happen.

I virtually never see it, so you can't tell me it does. It's a myth pushed by this site that has no basis in reality. Player A does not suddenly flee a table because Players B and C are having a private conversation about pot odds that lasts 45 seconds. Hell, most of the time people aren't even paying attention.

OMG, here we go again. The argument which will not die.

Not everyone.
But if even one occasionally changes his play or decides to do
some homework it makes poker lessons at the table a bad idea.

I spend more time at poker tables than you do, and I see more tables per session than you do. I'm not sure why you insist on discounting my (and others') personal experience. This is not some grand conspiracy being pushed by anybody, this is my own personal observation.

If you want to talk about things that have no basis in reality, let's examine what you keep bringing to the conversation. You're arguing against things that nobody is claiming. I don't understand why you repeatedly insist on doing this. You're arguing against yourself, and putting words in other peoples' mouths.

It's annoying. Please stop it.

Definitely true. I can still remember bluffing someone, and then overhearing two guys walking through my hand on each street and deducing it had to be a bluff (long after the hand is over). Huge wakeup call for me that I was a terrible player.

That was... maybe 10 years ago or so.

The moment players realize they are playing with people much better than they are the game becomes less fun. Players will keep playing if you are getting lucky against them but not if they think you're outsmarting them.

You limp in bb and shove first to act after the flop, sitting on $80 and get insta stacked before reloading for $100
09-13-2013 , 10:41 AM
You fold without any betting on the flop.......I mean seriously, backdoor trips and two pairs are always a possibility.
09-13-2013 , 12:13 PM
I never see it therefor it does not occur..
