How often do you run into pro poker players posing as dealers?

You know the ones that I am talking about. The dealers who know everything about poker. The ones that try to give you poker lessons after a hand is over about bet sizing etc...

Lol these type of dealers tilt me beyond comprehension.

The over/under on how long a poker dealer who comments on how a hand was played after it's over can expect to keep their job is about 5 minutes.

Hmmm...is that right? I suppose that these indian owned casinos make their own rules and let a lot of questionable stuff fly?

I regularly see dealers asking their buddy who is at the table to show him his hand before he folds it. Player shows it and the dealer will make some dumb comment like 'wow! you are playing way too tight tonight Jim Bob!'

Or if I check the river after opponent checks also and then I flip over JJ on a
AAK 10 9 flop, the dealer will say some stupid garbage like 'oh wow man I woulda bet like $75 bucks there'

I just smile and think to myself....'yep. that's why you are still dealing cards instead of playing'

Situation you described in that last post is very, very uncommon but it depends on where you're at. To a lesser extent it's not that uncommon and isn't good. Especially lower stakes or smaller places there are a lot of dealers who talk way too much. Usually in all the wrong spots as well they're the guys who are clueless when they actually should be doing their job.

ETA - At the stakes where they're interjecting about a $75 river bet they're unfortunately better off than all the players though...

I've seen this at Turning Stone, when a player folded the dealer looked at his cards and gave him a weird look. Kind of irked me when I was still in the hand. Still won a $120 pot.

Re: How often do you run into pro poker players posing as dealers?

Played poker in South Korea for three years and never noticed how good I had it.

Dealers never said a damn word unless it was job related whenever a hand was in progress, some would make a tiny bit of small talk while shuffling or dealing if it didn't slow them down, but that was it. Don't think I ever once saw a Korean dealer slow down a game with extra chatter.

Dealers in Canada talk so much, sometimes I wonder if they plan to post and just deal themselves into the hand.

I've never run into even close to the situation OP is describing.

However, I've had talkative dealers that have run the gamut from just a few brief friendly words to ones that significantly slowed down the game.

I think a dealer who can join in a little banter is an asset at the lower stakes, where there are a ton of players who are just there to have a good time, so another person at the table who is contributing to the feel good vibe (albeit in a professional manner) is a positive. But if they can't run the table and talk at the same time without obviously slowing down the action, then for God's sake just shut up and deal.

I haven't played ton of casinos or put in huge hours, but I have never seen this. I have seen some talkers, but generally just "smalltalk" with the regs , and that is simply good business!

I encounter this once per 4-5 months of play. When it happens I tell the floor that his dealer is giving poker lessons at the table and the floor bends down and whispers into the dealer's ear and miraculously it stops.

But yeah, annoys me to no end.

Yeah, it really makes me mad.

Another thing that happens pretty much every single time that I play is when a player leaves the table to goto the bathroom or to eat, someone at the table will usually comment on how much of a donk the player is or how tight they play etc...or they will even go as far as to talk about a certain hand that just happened where the absent player was involved in and they say stuff like 'i can't believe he did that with A 7 offsuit.' And the dealer will usually add his 2 cents to the convo also. I was thinking it was probably against the casino rules but it seems to happen every single time Im there that I just didn't think it was worth the fight if I spoke up about it.

Stay classy.

And LOL @ "Still dealing cards". A lot of dealers I know make bank. Way more than you professional 1/2 grinders.

Re: How often do you run into pro poker players posing as dealers?

There was a card room that I used to play at in Minnesota that was pretty small where all or most of the dealers were local grinders who also played at the card room. There was such a little community there that a lot of the players would have borderline inappropriate conversations about players and hands etc. This was earlier in my poker playing career so I didn't really realize how obnoxious it was. Generally, however, I like a moderately chatty dealer who knows when to talk and when to shut up. The absolutely most annoying dealer chat is hearing their little bad beat stories. The worst.
