Re: How much do you lose live before quitting for the night

Lately I have been seeing some of the local pros acting with very tightly with stop/loss... if they suffer several lost hands and bring down their stacks to say 50%-60% of the initial buy in, they stand up and either switch tables/move to another poker room, or they call it a night. I will usually go the felt myself.

Thoughts on this?

2 BI's. Limit player, so the approach is going to be different.

Half or so of 1 bi doesn't seem like a big deal at first glance, MS. Unless it's one hand. Then maybe go for a walk to deal with potential tilt issues

it seems as though they are reading the trend line of that nights poker session and pulling the plug before the damage can be to big.

Not a limit player if you are using bi as a metric.

Oh, I'd love to hear this explanation...

I guess it is just me and the limit players I associate with me then. Always have used big bets or racks.
Hadn't thought I was in the minority.

They're human, and susceptible to mistakes from fatigue or emotion. That whole idea of keep playing if the game is good is BS, imo. What if three big fish leave for the night, it's 9am now, and three other big fish (retirees) come to play in the morning? If they're grinding for ten hours straight, make a few k, then lose a chunk of their winnings in a pot late into the session (~$800) from some sick beat, it's smart to pick up and call it a night.

+1 as i could buy in for 10k if I wanted in a $2/4 limit game so the thought of a buy in as a metric is a bit pointless. Brown I always think in terms of racks as i buy in for 2 in a 3/6 structure and 3 in a 4/8 structure.

Yeah, I do the same. But to each their own I suppose.

I find that if you have a losing image two things happen.

-You lose Fold Equity.
-Players are more likely to make a move against you.

Also, and perhaps most important of all... Many players will simply play worse when losing.

Re: How much do you lose live before quitting for the night

If the game is good and I am playing my game without tilting and down a few buyins I won't quit because I know it's coming right back to me sooner or later.

Re: How much do you lose live before quitting for the night

You should quit whenever you're not playing your A game. What that means varies from person to person. Some people will tilt if they've taken a bad beat, regardless of how much they're stuck at the moment. Some people will tilt if they're stuck, regardless of how bad their beats were. Some people will tilt if they win a bunch of money and think they're invincible ("rungood tilt").

I'd advise deciding what a good stop-loss number is for yourself, and then not making any more than that available to you. Maybe it's 1 buy-in - you run KK into AA on the first hand, you go home. Maybe it's 3 buyins, then don't bring more than that. Maybe it's 100 buyins, and if you have anything above than in your box or player's bank account, take some out.
