How Many Of You Have Slept in Your Cars? How Many Of You Have Slept in Your Cars?

I have started taking pillow and blanket as well. I will sleep for 3 to 4 or maybe 5 hours and then get up and brush my teeth and do breakfast and all of the other morning stuff. I'll go and play golf or shop, etc. then eat lunch and take a nice little snooze for an hour or two. Then I go and work out and shower at the local gym which just happens to be the same name brand as my gym at home. As long as you have the better membership you can workout at any of their gyms. That is how I manage to save on rooms. I figure I have to play at least one hour before I can break even because of the gas costs. Luckily I get at least one $15 food comp while playing. I guess I need to just move over there until online poker gets going again.

When I was barely 21, back in, uh, a while ago, I recall a trip to Vegas where both my travel-partner and I had both hit the ATM just after midnight, and found ourselves both with money but past our daily limit when it came time to drive home. [I realize now that we could have likely made purchases on the cards, and that the cash limit was a cash limit.] It was Sunday and we were broke and stranded. We both took a good nap.

I have slept in my car in many walmart parking lots whilst driving across the country. I have also once taken a greyhound bus to a casino for a poker series, was robbed the 3rd day I was there(atm/debit cards and all cash), and my ticket for the return trip was 3 days away!
It was an indian casino with a "travel-center style" gas station open 24 hours about a half mile away. It had a nice lounge for truck drivers with a TV and recliners. Needless to say, I disguised myself as a truck driver for those last 3 days. I watched Eddie Murphy marathons and slept just fine

I remember the first time playing live 2-5PLO, ran well and was too tired to drive anywhere far once the room closed. Drove about a mile to the beach and slept there (Florida night in the summer was humid), woke up feeling like I was caked in salt. Proceeded to play the next day all sandy and ****.

It's really ****ing cold.
Absolutely true, even in California. Also while the back seat seems the most logical, the front seat reclined has treated me better-and by better I mean still pretty miserable...and COLD.

Also unrelated to poker lol.

I can't imagine giving up a hot shower just to save a few bucks. At most a hotel is gonna run you $100 and that's basically one bet at some point in a 2/5 game. Get a hotel.
02-28-2013 , 05:40 PM
Nah, there is no way I could do that. I would much rather just pay for a cab or get a cheap room. Bottom line is, I need a shower before I can do anything productive the next day. Sleeping in the car would just make me feel bad about myself.

I love how much input you're getting on this thread. It's one of those things you try for yourself. I'm sure you were smart enough to bring a sleeping bag.

I usually try and play four weekends a month. The weekend rates in my area are really high. Even at $100 that would make it something like $800 a month for hotel fees if I get a room for Friday and Saturday nights. It would be better for me to just rent an apartment or house for that much money and I could stay and play even more at that point. I am thinking about moving close to the casinos so I can play more.

In your case, it would honestly be smarter to move closer to the casinos so you can keep playing the amount that you do. Are there not any low down hotels nearby?

Have slept in my car in AC (at Borg) and outside of Foxwoods/Mohegan Sun multiple times, all on weekends. In winter it gets too goddamn cold to knock out more than 20 minutes at a stretch, but otherwise all you really need is 4 hours plus the odd nap.

The hygiene I have down to a mother****ing science. I keep a shave kit in the car with a hand towel, hand sanitizer, no-rinse shampoo and deodorant. Your basic bum shower involves getting sanitizer on the sweaty parts, lathering up your hair, drying everything off and applying deodorant.

If you want to get fancy, you can pick up field bath wipes from a camping store or use **** like camp soap or baby powder, but the above has you more than covered for basic casino patron hygiene standards. The trick is to change undershirts/boxers/socks/etc. at least daily; first, for comfort especially if you sweat a lot and second because it cuts down on the odor.

You can get away with wearing the same pair of jeans everyday and the same jacket if you're switching out undershirts often enough, especially if the undershirts are varying colors. Cuts down on how much you have to pack and lug around if you end up deciding to get a room somewhere.

I used to do this more often, but now a lot of places have opened closer to where I live that staying overnight in AC isn't my only option anymore and I can usually swing a nap at a rest stop/gas station if driving tired becomes an issue. Plus, in AC I discovered this really ****ty motel near the Trop that runs like $40 a night (varies seasonally, highest I've seen it was $75) if you don't mind sharing a bathroom with whatever junkie uses it to shoot up, or even shell out like a baller and get your own bathroom for another $20-30.

You know you're a degen nit when you're shipping $500+ pots back and forth at 2-5NL/1-2PLO and betting $50-$100 hand for entire baccarat shoes but you won't drop more than $60 on a room, lol

I'd rather have a room but bring this as a backup. Sometimes I go spur of the moment and rooms are sold out...
Yeah, I've slept in car or in casino a number of times it's usually been an issue regarding room availability (check out/in times as often as availability).

As the op is asking, I think he means as a regular/long term thing, no. I'd imagine that would suck. As a short term thing you're usually so tired you don't care once that becomes the preferred option. Guys doing it long term definitely have the and commitment to this game (or something).

Sounds like you have a lot of this stuff down. I myself have to have a shower. A shower just makes me fell so much better. I have a gym membership that lets me work out at any of the places. I took a shower last night at the gym (close to the casino) after working out. Then I went and got a comped meal before playing. Played nine hours and zonked out in my car. It was freezing (literally 32 degrees). Had to crank the car up twice. I went and bought a sleeping bag that is supposed to be comfortable down to 30 degrees. It was 30 bucks but I can use it many times and for more than just sleeping in my car. $30 would not have gotten me much as far as a room last night being a Friday night.

I pretty much go and play on the weekends. Play Friday and Saturday nights. Recover on Sundays and get ready for the long week.

By the way, the $30 Coleman sleeping bag from Wal Mart was a good investment. It got down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 28 degrees last night and I was nice and toasty in the sleeping bag.

Couple of plastic gallon milk jugs filled with water. A third with the top half cut off for a "bucket". Wash rag and towel.

You seriously spent 3 days living at a gas station? Thats insane! You didn't have any friends or family you could call who would come and get you?

On topic: I've slept in my car before after playing ridiculously long sessions and was worried that I wouldn't be able to drive home safely. I imagine if I ever try to do a 2-3 month long road trip that it might not be a bad option some nights just to leave a sleeping bag in the car....

I'm not sure if these belong in this thread or in the "disgusting" thread.

I'm not sure what is disgusting about sleeping in a sleeping bag.

To be fair, I believe his comment is in regards to the "whore bath" process. Using water and "washing up" in a public bathroom is pretty disgusting, but hey, I don't judge.

When I was in college, a few friends and I were broke and underage, but we drove out to Vegas anyway and played pit games all night. I had a minivan, so just slept in there until like noon and then drove home. It wasn't that bad, I don't think we even had pillows/blankets.

Ah, to be young and poor again.
