How Many Of You Have Slept in Your Cars? How Many Of You Have Slept in Your Cars?

Back in the day when the AC casinos were straight packed and you had to be a straight baller to get a weekend room even if you paid for it, there were many a time I had to crash for 3 to 4 hours in the parking deck after a long session.

And to this day I sometimes take a nap in the car after a long session that goes into the early hours.

I'll put it like this, I'm not a cheapskate(I know, I know, this is usually the cliche-ish copout when you are in fact a cheapskate lol), but I'm not going to pay $170 for a room at a place like Sands on a Friday night when I got down there around 9PM, played til 5 or 6AM and then they boot me from the room at 12PM latest.

I play because I enjoy it, but I do use it to supplement my income in a sense and am a small overall winning player, so it isn't so recreational where I'll just throw away large chunks of my profit to crash for 5 or 6 hours and then have the temptation to play Saturday when I have other things and responsibilities I need to attend to.

So I'll take a nap in the car then drive home and shower and eat and get on with my day if I'm falling asleep at the wheel.

If I was younger I would definitely do it if it meant I could play. 3 or 4 hours of broken sleep is better than nothing. I miss live poker so much now, living in Vegas and can't afford even a $33 buy-in at 7pm every night at the Plaza Fremont St & Main with only a $3 rake cause I used all my poker winnings from before to pay bills when I had a bad run in poker and in financial life. I was too stubborn to learn cash games and chose the high variance tournament life thinking I could avoid the emotional turbulence a long cashless streak would bring, damn, if only I could do it all over again.

I have a couple times when I was younger do to circumstances like ending up drunk far from home and not wanting to leave my car. Back then I had a mazda6, I'm not sure how comfortable it was but when you are that drunk, its not really sleeping its more like passing out. I never would for gambling purposes or just to save on a hotel room, especially considering now I drive a corvette and cant imagine it would be good to sleep in even if completely drunk

I have a small SUV that can't fit a regular mattress in the back when I lay the seat flat. So I put a dog bed in there ("large dog" size) and lay diagonally.
Very comfy.
I sleep under a plaid blanket and cover my face with a flannel shirt to block the light.
Usually I have a bunch of laundry and random stuff laying around. Excellent camouflage.
Behind tinted glass nobody notices I'm there.

I recently bought a small SUV and have been wanting to give this a try. I live 1.5 hours from my poker room and the hotels are always either booked or expensive on the weekends.

My backseat folds down to make plenty of room to stretch out. Windows are tinted so snoring might be the only give away. I plan to try it for only one night.

Checklist:

- sleeping bag
- blanket
- air mattress (the cheap kind used in swimming pools)
- jug w/lid to piss in
- large bottle of water
- toiletries
- fresh socks/underwear
- Glock 27

I have slept in a car in the parking lots of: Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods, Borgata, The Commerce, Hollywood Florida Hard Rock and several off strip casinos in vegas for various lengths of time during poker road trips.

The keys to my success:

1) Get a gym membership - I was always able to find a gym that would allow me to join for 2 weeks or a month for less than the cost of one night at a local hotel. I would visit the gym once or twice a day as needed for exercise, relaxing and of course matters of hygiene.

2) Be focused and inspired to play poker and profit, so that you spring into action after 4 or 5 hours of sleep. This only works if you are on a dedicated mission to grind your arse off and keep expenses down. You only sleep when your body needs it, and in shorter than normal intervals. I would average 3, 4-5 hour sleep sessions, every 2 days.

3) Have a vehicle that you can comfortably sleep in for 4-5 hours. I had a Land Rover for my east cost sleep and when I traveled west, I rented an SUV with fold down back seats.

4) Once you crush, treat yourself. I would give myself a goal, for example: when my travel roll is 1k higher than it started, and when I achieved that goal I would book a nice hotel room and sleep and watch movies for 20 hours and then rinse and repeat the grind.

All the above is true. Not necessarily proud, but keeping expenses low allowed me to go from 1/2NL to 5/10NL in less than a year of playing 15 days / month exclusively on the road (I lived in New York and travelled twice a month for a week at a time to grind).

Jealous of the sleeping arrangements shown here. I need to up my car-game because even Muggsy Bogues wouldn't fit to sleep in my Escort

Actually I did sleep in my car once.

I was playing in a home game at a friend's garage in a nearby town (~hour drive away). Game was juicy with a friendly atmosphere, I had a good time, won some money but also had too many beers. When the game broke up at around 4am I left and while walking to the parking lot, I realized I can't walk straight and barely see when I'm going (was drunk, but not 100% wasted). Now what? Can't go home I'll 100% die somewhere on the road if I try to drive!
I felt bad about going back to my friend and asking for a sleepover so I just took a nap in my car, woke up at noon and drove home.

In 2004-07 I was a college kid and had to drive 2 hours to get to Turning Stone. I napped in my car regularly after long sessions. In fact, one particularly bad Winter my car broke down after I got to the Casino. It was during a particularly bad stretch at the tables and I remember not knowing what I'd do if I went broke. I somehow made enough that week to fix my car and go home, but I had to sleep in my car for a while (I was comped a room for two of those days).

When I'd go to AC I'd usually relax in my car and enjoy the sunset from the Borgata/Taj parking lot. I took a long hiatus from poker and got an office job so no more car naps for me. Kind of miss the freedom though.

Slept in my car for 6 seconds last month after one of those 20 hours session:

Since then, I have tried to take a nap in my car on two occasions. Woke up both times in absolute panic with my heart racing, thinking I had fallen asleep while driving. I finally got the message: a 30$ motel is a good investment.

I did many times when I was playing for a living.if I didn't win the money for a room that day I didn't get a room.Protect bankroll at all times even if I could afford it.

I've slept in the car dozens of times on road trips. I am sure in some places there are no-goodniks in rest areas but I have never encountered any, but when I have done this it is usually in the middle of Nebraska or something. Nobody there but truckers and cows and most of them are not looking for trouble. Have also slept in the car because I was drunk and didn't want to drive home, and occasionally because I was too tired after playing in the casino. If you don't have a large SUV or camper pickup to sleep in the back of, it's better to sleep in the front seat and recline it, there's much more room than sideways in the back seat.

Goofiest time I ever slept in the car was when I drove out to a small airport in the middle of nowhere at night to relocate an airplane. When I got there there was freezing fog so I couldn't take off. While trying to keep the wings clear of ice long enough to take off I left the headlights on the car on so I could see. By the time I gave up the battery had run down enough that I couldn't start the car, so I had to sleep in the car parked there out on the airplane ramp, and wait for the airport manager to show up in the morning and jump the car Temperature was about 10 degrees and of course I wasn't expecting it so no sleeping bag or anything. It was cold, but people have slept in colder, at least I was out of the wind.

The key when sleeping in your car is to always wash your Grundel.

a better thread title would be "how many of you have never slept in a car after degening all night?"

Spent two months on a random industrial street near commerce sleeping in my car. Had been living in a local motel to grind and ran bad enough to not be able to afford it anymore. Ended up going broke anyway. A friend bailed me out and let me stay for two months then stayed with an uncle for six months. Started grinding again and now living in an apartment in Vegas. Almost none of this was much fun but looking back I can laugh.
