Been a while since I've been in Vancouver, looking to move somewhere in Canada where I can be a reasonable walk from a reasonable casino / poker room at a decent price, ideally sublet/month-to-month or hotel/motel. Something like [1-4 hours of top possible 1/2 winrate at casino] + <10-15m walk from casino. Is there anything like that here?

If you think that Vancouver rents are reasonable, not only have you not been here in a while, I'd argue you haven't been on Earth in a while. The story of property prices and rents in this town has to be on of the more talked about stories in Canada.

It's prob not inconceivable to get a place near to one of the suburban casinos, but you'll sacrifice a heck of a lot of city life to live on the harbor in Richmond or in a burb like Langley.

Most of the regs itt would also argue that Van is one of the nittier cities to grind 1/3 in. 2/5 not much better. PLO an option if you have a 50K bankroll.

I don't think there's any housing whatsoever a 15 minute walk from either casino. But yes you are going to pay out the ass either way. Hopefully you don't plan on living off 1/3.

Find somewhere close to a Canada Line station, you've got the River Rock at one end and downtown Vancouver at the other. That's as good as it gets.

this sounds like the kind of gripe poker players in every city would say about their own city... or is Vancouver really that much tighter than other big cities?

A fair question, but I would lmao if someone in Florida said playing vs snowbirds or in LA vs easy money is harder than here. There's almost no 2/5 here, grinding 1/3 to $30/hr when facing a 7+1 rake is extremely difficult no matter where you are, cost of living is high here, and most poker rooms have downsized/are in process of downsizing in the next year. And yes, imo, regs are nitty here unless you play overnight games exclusively. Sure they're bad and there's money to be made, but with cost of living, building a BR while living off you winnings will be extremely difficult.

All I can say is, come out here for a 2 week test run. 2 casinos are on Skytrain lines so you can stay wherever and taste 2 of the 5 area rooms. But I also think you could spend 2 weeks in Vegas and make more money, if you get off-season room rates on the Strip.

Re Skytrain:

Edgewater and River Rock are get off and gamble. The casino is right there.

Grand Villa is accessible by skytrain for the most part. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the Brentwood station. You can make it work on a nice day, or take a quick bus ride over with your transit pass. It's right beside a school campus so lots of buses.

Hard Rock... Get off at the Braid station and then it's a 5 minute cab ride from there to the door. Not ideal but possible.

Starlight... The same thing but getting off at a stop in New West and take a cab to the front door.

Cascades... Way out there in Langley and only accessible by car. This casino is at the bottom of my list for recommendations. Overall, it's just a dark and grimy place.

Starlight closed their poker room several years ago. Hard Rock is the worst room of the 5 now.

I like the other 4 rooms, and play them all.

I think Villa is extremely overrated in this thread.

On the 26th Edgewater would have it's monthly 450+50 tourny, that runs the last saturday of every month. I've never played it, I'm a nighttime player.

Edgewater vs. Villa

Edgewater Pros:

The biggest game in town is the Edgewater PLO and it's not even close.

If you're visiting Vancouver, Edgewater has a central location next to nightclubs, stadiums, and the waterfront and it by far makes the most sense to play there.

Edgewater also has a very diverse multicultural mix, whereas Villa is about 75% chinese.

IMO more inspiring atmosphere but that's very subjective. Better lighting, better drink options, more out of town tourists, and some of the waitresses are cute (none are at Villa from my experience)

Villa Pros:

The 1-3 action tends to be slightly better at Villa, and there is 2-5 at Villa (Edgewater basically never runs 2-5)

better TV watching and smoking set ups,

better dealers

Hi fellow Vancouverites 2+2ers.

I'm planning a 2 weeks roadtrip to Vegas mid/end november, to grind small stakes and daily tournaments. Is anyone interested to join and split gas/hotel ?

river rock isn't that far from the airport and that's going to get you the cheap decent hotels.

rents in vancouver have gone way way up in vancouver the last 5 years..... landlords i think are getting much more aggressive in raising rents. like everywhere, the rental vs. monthly cost of owning gap was massive - probably bigger than almost anywhere else... a friend of mine who worked at starbucks was able to secure a 1 bedroom rental in west end 6 or 7 years ago. that sounds absurd to me today.... the competition to rent has become very aggressive too.

Just talked with Grand Villa staff and he told me that the poker room was about to be relocated in a dedicated room, which is currently the staff resting room. And they will add 2 tables, it will be 8 instead of 6.

Ahh so that's what the construction at the far end by the HL baccarat room is for.. that is good to hear, I've notice Villa has to try and up their game a bit because the new Parq casino is coming up which will have all the attention for a few months.

Nice that they are adding more tables, I know when Edgewater becomes Parq they are removing two tables so a total of six.

Really what should be done is they should get rid of poker at the casinos and BCLC should just open their own poker club like with playground in Montreal... but that would make too much sense

So yeah, that is true, the new room opened today. Very bright, should be nice when done. 5 tables for now, but 8 by this weekend according to staff.

How often and what times does the edgewater PLO game go? Details? Number of tables and stakes?

Does PLO run anywhere else??
