Tunica poker gets sadder every time I travel through. Most players still have no idea what they are doing, but that doesn't really help in a game like that.
Almost breaks my heart hearing that. Tunica was the first "poker trip" I ever took 10-12 years ago, and went back 4 or 5 times. Will always have a soft spot for that place but dont ever see a reason to need to go back except maybe during the WSOP Curcuit events. Use to be a poker hub.

I had to re-read your post twice and check your username because I thought you must be one of my poker buddies. We cut our teeth on our home game and our very frequent trips over to Shreveport/Bossier but that's only 1.5 hours away, so it was hardly considered a "trip". Once we made our way out to Tunica, we thought we'd found the land of milk and honey. FREE food, more than you could ever eat, free and dirt cheap rooms and we were nothing more than $4/8 and $1/3 players. The games were great, the poker room staff was super nice and they genuinely wanted you to be there. We couldn't get enough. Then poker started drying up everywhere but Tunica seems to have been hit the hardest. Very sad. It was the real Southern poker destination for a long time.

Yeah growing up in OKC before they had poker, my friends and I would take annual trips to Tunica. The cheap rooms and free food were what the doctor ordered for a bunch of semibustos. Miss those days a ton. I visited Tunica for WSOPC right after the Strike room closed down. We always stayed and played mostly at Strike. Went up and the room was stripped out and empty. Legit cried.

At least Goldstrike is still a very good deal for ~$50/night, even though you can tell that they don't spend too much on maintenance. Our room door was in desperate need of some oil and the bathroom could have used some work, too.

I never visited Tunica during its heyday. Just why of 2 years I've gone to the Horseshoe at least ten times with ranges of 4 to 10 day stays.

I have been the gamut from some of the busiest poker rooms to small stakes home games. Given that, I rate Tunica as a "very good average" poker room. When it gets busy, there's plenty of action, large stakes on 1/3 normally top out on the just over a g range, while the average stack is around 300 or so (just as a guess) . Obviously this can all vary, but they regularly run24 hours games, and if not the game will go till daylight and be back up at 11am...

Yes, it may be slow .... As compared ... To a busy room, but there is consistently action, and money on the table.

Edit: i meant to add that. I think the op of this quote was playing the 2/4 limit game in which the min buyin is 40 dollars... The 1/3 is a min 100 buyin...

I was playing the 1/3 NL game. Min buy-in is $100 but they let players rebuy for $40.

I haven't been to Tunica on a weekend in ages, so it might be possible they don't allow that on busy days. But on non-busy weekdays, they definitely let players rebuy for 13BB.

Moving to memphis in about a month. What's the current scene like in the Tunica area? What are the mins/max of most games? Is smoking allowed in these casinos? Is there any other place besides the Horsehoe worth visiting as that's the one I see on Bravo? Thanks for any info.

Hollywood has a room, not a lot of action they have 3-6 limit mostly. There is a room over at that race track but I never been, I think its electronic tables. Horseshoe is about it there now

Any big difference in the rooms at the Horseshoe and Goldstrike? Thinking of going down for a few days during WSOPC. Thanks.

No big difference. I stay at Goldstrike because I always stay at Goldstrike, but the Horseshoe is perfectly fine too. Super quick walk from the Goldstrike to the Horseshoe poker room.

Wifi is included in the resort fee both at Goldstrike and Horseshoe.

There's free Wifi in the casino at Goldstrike but that doesn't help much since they don't have a poker room.

That’s basically still the case. I prefer the stylings of the rooms at the Horseshoe, as well as the casino in general; it’s just a nicer property IMO.

Goldstrike’s buffet is better than the Shoe but the best in town is Fitzgerald’s.

How is the PLO at the Horseshoe. I see they have games running, but reading this thread I also see that there is a lot of short stacking (NLHE). Just wondering if there is action here or better off going to the JACK in Cincinnati

In my opinion, for plo, go to Jack Cincy or Horseshoe Hammond.... not Tunica!

When did you see PLO running at the Horseshoe?

Maybe a year ago I asked the floor about PLO and he told me they always have a game Friday/Saturday night with the stakes basically depending on what players show up. When we passed Tunica again on the way back the next Friday, I was told there was no PLO because too little people showed up. I was like ‘WTF not even two weeks ago I was told every Friday/Saturday’ but didn’t complain about it because they had 2/5 NL going which is a weekend-only thing, too.
