Yeah, I won't be going back to Tunica after the last Circuit stop there -- a complete train wreck, and nothing to do when the games suck. Which is exactly the way they want it.

I didn't head down there for any circuit events but I can say that the WPO seems to be going very well. I'm not knocking the staff at Harrah's but I've never been treated better than I get treated at the Gold Strike. The horseshoe is pretty awesome as well.

The tournament floor (even though under a lot of pressure with the different tourneys running etc) was very polite and attentive to all my questions and requests. I feel lucky to only be an hour away.

Re: Tunica: current state of affairs....

I've been to Tunica for the WPO in 2007 and may decide to make a short trip for the WPO right now. I was wondering what Harrah's (formerly known as Goldstrike) and Horseshoe is charging as poker rate during the WPO and if weekend rates are the same. Does the limit you play factor in on the poker rate you get?

I had a very positive experience last time I went and the rooms were comped because a friend of ours played a good amount in the pit.

To people that are down there right now...what games are they spreading, in terms of mid/high limit holdem and limit omaha8. All additional pointers and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'm gonna be at the Shoe over Labor Day. You'll find me in the 20 game unless I can get a bigger table going. Feel free to sachez up and introduce yourself or take a seat at the table.

I always look forward to meetin' other members of the flock. Besides, I'll need TR fodder anyways.

Re: Tunica: current state of affairs....

A buddy told me one of the Tunica joints is running a strange tourney. $300 buy-in gets you $300 chips, house adds $2,500 to pot, and get this: you can get up and cash out at anytime (like a cash game). Leaving early means your forfeit any right to the extra $2,500, but if you double up on first hand and wanna go you can.

Anyone have a link to a more detailed 2+2 post on this (or confirm if details are accurate)?

I really Loved the Beau Rivage and the South in general. I dont mind renting a car, I dont drink alcohol so driving to & from memphis isnt a big deal if its worth it. Is the action going to be so sick that I dont care about seeing cheap women with severe daddy issues work a pole? How is the food in Tunica? Any idea about local massages or anything like that?

maybe Legends of poker is a better option but I really wanted to get away earlier. thanks for the addvice guys
Sadly the police finally closed down the old Platinum Plus. A ledgend of strip clubs

I just got back from a 4 night stay, so I'll give you any info I can.....

As was already mentioned, the Gold Strike (MGM owned) is still the Gold Strike and the home of the WPO. The Grand (Harrah's owned) was rebranded as Harrahs.

As for poker room rates, the Horseshoe's rates are $45/65 wk/wk-end and that is where we stayed. The Strike's rates were quoted to me over the phone as $65/every night + $5 "resort fee". These rates were during the WPO but drop down comparable to the Shoe's rates after the WPO.

Personal opinion, the action was crazy at the GS and I'd spend the extra $ to stay and play with them right now.

As for the LHE games being spread, the GS was spreading $10/20 (when they could get it going) and $1-4/4-8 and some $4/8 24 hrs. a day. I did not see a bigger LHE game there, however the Shoe was running $15/30 and $20/40 very regularly. As for limit O8, the GS was running a $4/8 half kill most of the time. Back in the main tournament room the extra tables were used for cash games and I saw several bigger PLO8 games going most (if not all) of the time. $10/25 and $10/25/50. I won't promise that there wasn't bigger LHE and limit O8 games going but I didn't see them.....I can ask one of my buddies to confirm.

The $10/20 at the GS seemed to play for short periods, then break. But over all there were a ton of people there and a ton of cash games going 24/7. The number of people/action at the GS so far out numbered the Shoe it wasn't even funny. I saw very very little spill over at the Shoe from the GS. By midnight on Fri./Sat. the Shoe might only have 6 tables running. It was really surprising to then walk over to the GS and see every table in the main poker room running plus many tables in the main tourney room.

I will say if you are looking for bigger LHE, it did seem the Shoe was able to spread these games regularly where the GS wasn't or didn't try.

Hope that info helps...

Re: Tunica: current state of affairs....

I just got back from two nights in Tunica. My main goal was to play games other than holdem. Thursday night at 11pm I checked on the Stud game at the Horseshoe, but it had just broken up. They had 4/8 Omaha8 at the GoldStrike so I went there just before midnight and played, but the game broke apart between 1am and 2.

Friday morning I got to play Stud with old folks for an hour or two. What surprised me was that there is no ante in the game, just a $1 bring in. I had to check out by 1pm, so I didn't get to play as long as I wanted, but I did leave the game up $8.

At the Horseshoe I asked about a poker room rate and as others have stated it is 45/65 for 5 hours of play. They were booked up on Friday so I didn't get to take advantage of it.

Finally at the Sheraton (where I had stayed), during August from 1 to 4pm on Mon-Thur at the Big Kitchen Buffet it's only $3.99. (i think that's the restrictions on the deal, I just stumbled into it by sleeping late, and it wasn't offered when I checked Friday (7.99 then))

Re: Tunica: current state of affairs....

Just got back from Tunica. I stayed at the Gold Strike on Tue and left Friday. The hotel is much improved since I last stayed there, I guess they re-did the rooms. I never paid for a meal, the poker room always took care of that if you just asked. I booked the room thru the poker room and they were very nice over the phone. I did not have to show my card or anything to get the rate, they just give it to you.

The poker room and the action itself was fine. I was there a few years ago during whatever the event used to be (WPT?) and the action was nuts; it wasn't like that but it was still pretty good. Definitely not Las Vegas good but ....

They had several deep stack tournaments. The one I played in I thought was run really well. (I ended up taking 23rd in a 280-person event with a $340 buy-in; got back $690 for 10 hours of play - lol) Top prize paid $22,000 and came with a seat to the $5,000 "main event".

The cash games were fine. At least 1 big PLO game. I played $2/5 mostly and some $2/5/10. I don't play limit so not sure how big those were.

The main event for $5,000 is on Sunday (8/9). I'll be interested to see how many entrants they get.

I would probably go back, but only during one of those events. As many have said, short of driving to Memphis, not much to do other than play poker. And it doesn't seem to me that the poker would be that great when nothing is going on there.

That said, I am kicking myself given some posts here for not going over to the Shoe. Ah well.

Anyone play in the 5K main event this past Sunday? Was curious about the # of entrants.
