Tunica Tunica

I haven't been to Tunica for a couple years and a few buddies and I are thinking about planning a late summer Tunica limit hold'em trip to donk it up. I've stayed at the Shoe and the Strike before on the poker room rate and I'm curious how things are out there now with the economy and such. I stayed about 10 nights in Tunica in '07 and never bought a single meal, due to the over generous comps. I'm just curious if that has changed any?

Basic questions..

1) Poker room rates / hrs of play required at the Shoe and Strike?

2) Food comps? Still pretty much all you can eat for free with decent play?

3) Current state of low limit HE games?

Thanks for the help guys.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I was wondering if anyone even goes to Tunica anymore? A year ago, a post like this would be 2 pages long very quickly.

I'm not glad to hear that the Gold Strike and other rooms aren't doing great though. The more action the better.

I'm glad to hear the comps are still good. I called the Shoe today and the lady who books the poker rooms was gone for the day but the floor said he thought the rooms were $45/$65 for week nights and weekends respectively and if rooms were available at the time of booking, you could actually stay at the Horseshoe hotel vs. the Veranda. I hope this is the case because I'm not willing to drive from the Veranda since there will be 3-4 guys and only one vehicle. That wouldn't be practical since some guys will want to play all night and other will want to go to the room etc.

I'm going to call and see if I can get more info.

Thanks for the reply. Anyone else with any info?

Just checking the board for some Tunica info myself, found this thread decided to jump in. Due to some family drama I probably won't be able to make the WSOP so I am looking at July & The choices seem to be Legends in LA or the Gold Coast Championship. I think I want to go to Tunica, I was at the BR event last september & had a great 2 days until they evacuated us.....Cuz thats how I run in life.

Can anyone who has spent any time in Tunica chime in please!!! What kind of turnout do you guys think (round number guesses obv)

What kind of nightlife is there for a single guy? Strip Clubs? Massage? Nightclubs?

Do I need to rent a car or will I be spending all my time in Tunica & not visiting Memphis?

What are the buy ins for $5/10 NLHE & PLO? How bout $10/25?

Thnaks in advance for your help

Sorry to say there is nothing - and I mean nothing - to do in Tunica except gamble. That's not a bad thing at all, its just what it is.

Memphis/Beale Street is fun but about a 45 min drive. That's where your bars will be. There's a great minor league baseball park if that's your thing. Not a fun drive back and forth though.

gold strike has a club upstairs by the poker room. thats about the only non-gambling thing there is to do in town.

Unfortunately, things are not quite what they used to be in Tunica for poker. There are still plenty of games at the Shoe though. They always have a 4-8 limit game going, and on the weekend sometimes they have a 20-40 limit game running. Of course, there are tons of no limit games going on anytime at the Shoe. As for the Grand, or Harrah's as it's called now, when I went last month there wasn't even a 4-8 game going. Keep in mind, this was around 3:00 PM on a Saturday afternoon! We played 3 handed for a while, but that quickly broke up. It was around 4:30 PM or so before we got a full game going. Anyway, I would recommend staying and playing at the Horseshoe, as they still have the best food comps in the country, and the poker is still great there. Like someone else said, they even have a $1-5 stud game. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions, I will be more than happy to help you out if I can.

I just wanna add, I still enjoy playing at Harrah's Tunica. The floorman (who is a 2+2er) does a great job on the floor, and also when he is dealing. The atmosphere is fun, and the games for the most part are soft. I just wanted to make that clear.

from the emails i get, the poker rate is 30/50 if you are staying at Harrah's (Grand) or 45/65 at Shoe.

So maybe the Poker open @ Gold Strike might not be the best destination for a guy looking to mix poker with pleasure huh?

I really Loved the Beau Rivage and the South in general. I dont mind renting a car, I dont drink alcohol so driving to & from memphis isnt a big deal if its worth it. Is the action going to be so sick that I dont care about seeing cheap women with severe daddy issues work a pole? How is the food in Tunica? Any idea about local massages or anything like that?

maybe Legends of poker is a better option but I really wanted to get away earlier. thanks for the addvice guys

Beau Rivage >>> Any property in Tunica

Memphis area is economically depressed and it is obvious whenever I go to Tunica. You are looking for great action, Tunica, unfortunately, isn't the best option for you. It hasn't been for the last few years.

Do the poker rooms in Tunica allow smoking? I hope not, but want to know for sure before even thinking of making the trip.

Thanks.

Damn this makes me kind of sad. I was really hoping that it was going to be more like the beau Rivage series in September. The thought of spending 3 weeks in a place where its only gambling gambling gambling kind of depresses me. I like having options away from the felt. maybe Legends of poker is a better option, either that or wait for the Beau Rivage series in September, it just seems so far away.

What? Horseshoe poker room is the best poker room in MS. Also, plenty of nightlife/things to do in Memphis, and the best BBQ in the world (literally). Also, Horseshoe and Harrah's are both NON-smoking poker rooms. BTW, Tunica has AWESOME food, and Better comps than in Vegas. You should definitely go to Tunica to play poker. For the record, I do not work in Tunica, I just play poker there.

This is a level, right? If not...

Sir, you are an online veteran. Leave the B&M cardroom reviews to live veterans. Tunica used to be a great place to play poker years ago but, sadly, there's not much action there anymore. I was even there during the WSOP Circuit events last January. Aside from 20/40 LHE game, the Horseshoe could not get a mid to high stakes games going. Even at the Harrahs, the cash games were the nittiest I've seen at any WSOP-C stop.

As far as food goes, Beau Rivage kills Horseshoe/Harrahs/Gold Strike by a huge margin. Unless by "AWESOME food", you mean greasy junk food.

I was there during the WSOP circuit event, and thought it was the worst run series i've even been to. Harrah's tunica does suck at poker. The Shoe has a deep 2/5 game and the 20/40LHE (both super soft). Action during the event itself was amazingly soft at 5/10nl and the 10/25nl

The action in Tunica is still pretty solid, imo. Obviously some of it has dried up due to the economy and things like that. There are still good action games (limit and nl) at the Strike and the Shoe. I haven't been over to the Grand (Harrahs) in a while though. The room I play at the most is Sam's Town, because I like the action there, and you get the most money for comps in there. Sadly, for those who asked for entertainment one needs to go to Memphis. Tunica is far away from dead, but it isn't thriving like it once was.

I agree Tunica is hurting, but not too bad. I was at the Harrah's (formerl Grand) on Monday night and there were two 1/3 NL games running, as well as one 4/8 limit game. Which for the Harrahs is not bad for a Monday night. I was also there the Friday before, and there were four 1/3 NL tables, two 4/8 limit, and one 2/5 NL games. Overall, the Harrahs is doing the same it has been for years. No need to worry, still plenty of money to be made in there.

Glad to see some replies, I was beginning to think no one, not even 2+2'ers went to Tunica anymore. Well we're booked for the Shoe on the weekend of July 25th, which actually coincides with the World Poker Open, which obviously isn't near as big as it used to be. Actually, considering we were able to book rooms AT the Shoe for that time period shows that the interest level in that tourney is pretty low. And I think someone mentioned it but the room prices at the Shoe are $45/$65.

The guys going with me are mostly $4/8 and $1/2 players so I'm thinking there should be plenty of action for us. The floor at the Shoe also said they should have a $3/6 O8 game going sounds donktastic! Plus who doesn't love some late night $1-$5 Stud with the geriatrics!

One thing I'll also add, is I talked to both the Shoe and GS about poker room rates. The GS was very unfriendly IMO and I was being very nice to the lady and mentioned that I stayed 5 nights with them in '07 and had a blast. I'm sure the lady is over worked but she had a very down to business attitude and acted as if she could care less if 4-5 guys came and stayed with them or not. The Shoe was totally different and was VERY friendly, telling me "not to bring money for food, cause we'll take care of that!" Seriously, they know how to treat poker players.

Hopefully everything will stay on "go" and we'll make the trip. If so, I'll be sure post a TR.
