Well, this is the last weekend for this year of the city's only overground game--the casino at the CNE. I haven't been in a couple of years but I'm thinking I might shrug off the grottiness and the rake rape and go tomorrow evening.

Casino Brantford and Casino Montreal continue to discriminate against men in carrying backpacks and other bags that women's bigger bags are not even inspected for. Even when I finally found a WPT string bag to use as my "man purse," Brantford security still stopped me to inspect and tag it.

See I don't mind them inspecting my bag, all I ever bring with me to a casino is a change of boxers and shirt in the summer (sweating as a big guy can get gross), and a power bank for my phone.

Hey Everyone.

What is the action like in toronto? Is it easy to get yourself into a 1/2 game everyday and are the games soft enough with reasonable rake?

I'm thinking of taking a long vacation somewhere I could mainly play poker for income and have always wanted to visit canada.

Any other advice/considerations etc would be appreciated also.

Highly recommend Montreal as an alternative. There are no casinos that support 1/2 NLH in Toronto besides Woodbine - however these tables are electronic (no dealer) - and fish stay away because they believe the software is rigged.

You'd have to find underground games to play which usually only run late hours and have high rake.

To be fair the weekends have plenty of fish at the 1/2 games. I'm talking mega donkeys and super passive fish but during the week it's many times much tighter than this and not many players period. Woodbine does a terrible job advertising that they have real poker not video terminal poker.

Does the PLO game still go sometimes?

Your best bet would probably be Vancouver. I hear River Rock is good these days.

Toronto is great for many things but poker hasn't been one. However, the stupid, grubby, frustrating, but somehow compelling, limit donkfest called the CNE casino will be opening for another 6-week run at the end of July ...

Here's a link: https://canvas.instructure.com/cours...ments/syllabus

(The tournament is not for those who take such things seriously.)

Thanks for response. Considering Vancouver and Montreal both seem like they have enough action any advice on which city would be best for everything else i.e food/nightlife etc?

Unless things have recently changed (and I don't think they have), Brantford, like Port Perry (and the 6 weeks of the CNE), only deals limit poker. There's sometimes low stakes (either 1/2 or 2/5) but it's mostly 5-10 and 10-20, with 1 or 2 tables of 20-40. On weekends a 50-100 table used to go but I don't know if it still does.

My sense is that both are great for food (Montreal more continental; Vancouver for its seafood), nightlife, and amenities.

Montreal remains very French in its atmosphere--a bit of Europe in North America--and for many visitors that will be its attraction. (Being able to speak both languages is a huge plus.) In the summer it's a city of cafes with inviting terraces and often with wonderful social interaction. In the winter it is cold, and that affects everything: if you're planning a long-term stay you should decide how you feel about that.

Vancouver is less urbane than Montreal, more laid back, very oriented to its waterfront. (A friend of mine who came from there told me that the general attitude is: "If you don't have anything better to do, then why aren't you out on the water?") The people are very friendly (well, at least by Canadian standards!) and it's an easy place to live in. (Both cities, being Canadian, have a very low crime rate. Don't bring your gun!) If you are into weed, it may be more relaxed than other Canadian destinations (but that's increasingly so all over).

I never played poker in Montreal but when I played in Van some years ago I found the games good and the players fun.

Weekends as far as I remember. I haven't played Woodbine poker in a good while though, something around a year.

Anything good casinos near Ottawa?

Lac Leamy has around 9 tables the last time I was there and generally not long waits to get a seat. The Hard Rock will be opening in a couple of years at the local track which is 5 minutes from my place so should be convenient! Playground is less than two hours away and has constant tournaments running as well as lively cash games and great service/food.

Lots of underground clubs and tournaments as well in Ottawa. Safe, clean, lots to do in the area especially if you are into water activities. Hundreds of lakes within a couple hours and hiking/biking in the hills.

**PRETTY SIGNIFIANT Great Blue Heron UPDATE** (I think...)

I'd consider myself someone who frequents the room, but not a daily / weekly reg.

Was there Monday (7/3) for first time in 3 weeks...and they had a 1/2 NLHE game running.

In the past, they're tried to spread a 1/2 NL game, but it had a $100 betting cap, and never really took off.

But yesterday, everyone (including the dealers) talked about GBH having recently been bought and the betting limit for the entire casino being raised to $2,500. So, the 1/2 game yesterday was no-limit...but with a $2,500 betting cap...essentially making it a regular 1/2 game.

I sat down about an hour into the game starting and played for 7 hours. Not only was it fairly soft, but the players kept rolling in and there was a good chunk of $$ on the table when I left.

A bunch of the regs still gravitated to the usual limit games...but I talked to the floor when I left and he said they'll start spreading 1/2NLHE whenever there's interest...they're just not actively promoting it.

Check it out for yourself, and maybe ask if there's a list or game next time you call in to get your name on the list...but it looks like the GBH may actually slowly becoming a NL room, as a closer option to the GTA than Rama or Niagara!

That's pretty cool. Thanks for the update.

With 2,500 cap, maybe they will also spread 2/5 NL.

How do they rake? Is there a BBJ drop?

How deep can you buy in to the 1/2?

No idea if they'll spread 2/5 yet. Probably need to get some traction going on 1/2.

Pretty sure it's $5rake / $1BBJ.

It's only $200max BI @ 1/2. Not ideal...but hopefully they revise. There were a LOT of rebuys while I was there, so effective stacks got to $4-500+ fairly quickly.

Was in area this past weekend so stopped by late Saturday night. only limit running and they said they rarely spread NLH and wouldn't start an interest list.
