Looks like I'll be moving to Reno in the early fall. If any of you guys are interested in moving into a new place with me, or just want to meet up, let me know. I've also started a thread here, in the marketplace: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/17.../#post32461779

Peppermill usually has the largest field size for their Daily Donkaments. The largest of them is at 1pm on Sunday, as it gets up to 60 - 80 players.

However, the 'Mill doesn't have any tourneys on Friday or Saturday nights.

Peppermill is an incredible room and is generally the only choice for high stakes games in Reno. 5/10 nl and 30/60 both run consistently thurs-Sunday and are generally great games. The 5/10 is straddled often and tends to play big and sometimes even gets full-on crazy. We will occasionally get 10/25 going too when the interest is there.

Overall, just an awesome room. Even for lower stakes, it's the clear choice in Reno IMO. I wouldn't even bother going anywhere else.

Going to Tahoe/Reno in 2 weeks. Got some good info from this thread but not sure if some of it was dated or not. I will be there during a weekday... Any 2/5 nl games going? Best weekday 1/2 nl game?

In Reno, Circus Circus and Harrah's have closed their poker rooms. I was there about 3 weeks ago and found the best games to be at Peppermill and El Dorado. Peppermill runs higher limit games, 2/3 running like 2/5. You will find soft 1/2 games at El Dorado, however, none really get going til around noon. Another casino to check out would be Atlantis, word has it their games are good, but I didn't get a chance to try them out.

Depending on where you are staying, El Dorado is the only one close to the main area where Harrah's and most of the other downtown Reno casinos are located. Both Peppermill and Atlantis are accessible by the buses and cabs, but are not within walking distance of downtown.

As far as Tahoe is concerned, can't give you much info there. Hopefully someone else who has been there recently will have more information.

I have not been since my Jan/Feb trip (as described above).

As for Tahoe, it is always the same from my limited experience, and my internet reading. Harveys is the only reliable game in town. I went to Lakeside Casino twice, and noticed the room was completely empty both times (blackjack and craps had favorable odds, though). Mont Blue Poker Room was open for about 3 hours after the evening tournament was over (about 10-11pm), then closed for the night.

Don't go to Tahoe just to gamble or play poker. Harveys does not give any comps for poker players, and the other games give worse odds than usual (all blackjack is 6:5, unless you play >$25/hand). Go for the mountains or the lake (they are awesome), and gamble just to have some drinks and laughs.

Anyone have thoughts about hotel rooms in Reno? I'm staying for two days midweek in January for work and need a place to stay. Would like something on the nicer side, poker and (cheap) gambling a plus.

The Peppermill and the FAR both have really nice rooms and bboth are good poker rooms.

I didn't see it mentioned in the thread but GSR remodeled the casino and built a new poker room with self service drinks. It's still not as nice as the Peppermill but it's better than anywhere else.

Anything amazing this weekend happening? I read on peppermiills website they have a tourney series this weekend, but there is not much info.

That's weird. Usually they post structure sheets. Their tournaments are structured well but ante's kick in later than normal IIRC.

There's also a series coming up at the Atlantis but it's in March. http://www.atlantiscasino.com/allin/index.html

I got this after an inquiry on Peppermills FB Page

Deep Stack Tourney Feb 20-24

I might be there for the LO8 Tourneys

Sounds like that would be the most likely place to find some live LO8 action as well. Any other LO8 action?

Peppemill is great for cash games. Absolutley horrible for their little tournament series. Whoever they bring in to staff them are absolutely clueless.

GSR is the exact opposite. Great for tournaments terrible for cash.

Bumping this for a little insight. I'll be staying at Circus Circus starting on the 14th for about eight nights. What rooms are within walking distance and what do they spread? As far as I can tell El Dorado is the closest. 1/2 or 1/3? What's the buy in cap? Any chance of 2/5? And is there any place close with a micro limit game? Preferably 2/4. Going to be with a fair amount of recreational players who like the idea of sitting down at a game but not the idea of losing more than 50-100.

Your best bet is El Dorado then. They will spread 1/2 usually beginning around noon time and runs late. They also offer stud. Your best bet for higher limit action is Peppermill or Atlantis, however, they are not within walking distance of Circus Circus. Since Harrah's closed their room last year, there really haven't been many options left within the main casino area.

Public transportation is available to both Atlantis and Peppermill, however, the busses run irregularly and have complicated schedules. Cabs are also available, but tend to be on the expensive side unless you are splitting fares. I was there last summer, so some of this information may be outdated, however, I havent heard of many changes in the past few months. Enjoy your trip.

After thoughts. Mikes a good guy, Atlantis is a nice place, but neither can put a dent in the juggernaut that is the PEPPERMILL.

Exercise: write down all these categories and put a P or A for whichever is superior.

Action
Amenities
Poker Room Layout
Amount of hotel rooms
Size of poker room
Game Selection

IMO Atlantis just got P'd on

Although they do run better tournament series, but even then they are the 2nd best in town to GSR.

I'm interested to see the turnout for the Card Player All-In Series. I'll probably donate to the prize pool in the ME.

I'm heading to South Lake Tahoe for the weekend (flight leaves in 5 hours).

In the past, I've always stayed at the Peppermill (which I really love the property) and just drove out to Squaw or Heavenly (or Rose if there's new snow... The Chutes are OMG awesome for such a small resort.)

This trip, we're staying slopeside at Heavenly. So my pokering will likely be curtailed to the SoLaTa casinos.

Looks like there isn't any recent info on specific pokering though.

I'm not planning on writing a proper trip report (unless things really get out of hand), but my goal for this trip is to get a good sense of the current state of poker in SoLaTa, so check this space sometime next week for an update.

And of course, if anyone has any recommendations, please chime in. Sushi, Baller Steaks, Happy Hour, Microbrews all highly prized.

We ended up playing just one night and only at Harvey's, which is adjacent to Harrah's. Harrah's doesn't have their own poker room. We didn't end up going to MontBlue or the other casino (the name escapes me).

Harvey's:

The room was good sized, about 25 tables.

By late in the night on Saturday, there were 5-7 2/3NL tables and 4 or so 3/6HE tables -- so a little less then 1/2 the tables had action going on. Nothing higher.

The opponent break down is as follows:
-- younger players who've read a few poker books and are having a hard time implementing the strategies. Few of these are break-even or +EV players. Maybe some day...
-- middle aged players who have "played poker for years" but are not quite regulars. Some seem to be ok and might be break even. Most have no clue what they're doing.
-- a couple older reg players who are playing tight/nit and complaining when someone opens to 5BB.
-- I'd say 4 or 5 good players, playing TAG, with big stacks (I'm not calling them good because of the big stacks).
-- I did not witness any good LAGs, IMHO. There were many bad LAGs.
-- I noticed only one drunk guy spewing chips everywhere. He was running like god, but eventually got stacked and left.

Generally, I'd say the game is on the soft side. Not nearly as soft at So. Cal, like Commerce or Oceans11, but much softer then Foxwoods.

Stacks were all on the smaller side, most bought in for 67BB or so. The big stacks had 200-400BB, but there were only a couple of these around.

Good luck.

Might drive through Reno. Is there consistent 1/2 and 2/5 action at pepper mill and what is the max buyin?

Is there enough action in Reno and Lake Tahoe to justify staying there for a month specifically to play poker? My bankroll only supports 1/2 NL right now. I don't really want to hang around Oklahoma for a whole month.

I want to start playing near the end of May.

Thanks!
