What are the best/biggest poker rooms in Reno? I've read over the reviews for the Peppermill, and heard a few comments about the Grand Sierra. But most of those comments were not made within the last year.

I'm planning on playing in Reno from around 8pm-2am this week from Friday - Sunday. Which rooms/games would people most recommend? I usually play 5/5 ($500-1000 buyin) in Los Angeles at Commerce, Hustler, and Hollywood Park.

Also, are there ever any decent tournaments in the evening? Wouldn't think so, but just wondering...

Peppermill is the most reliable. Call Ahead to see what is going, but the game you want will probably be going. 775-689-7275

Also, are there ever any decent tournaments in the evening? Wouldn't think so, but just wondering...generally , no.

Given you play 5/5 in L.A., the only room you'll have interest in is Peppermill. IMO, Reno's poker scene has been drying up for awhile and there's really nothing else worth mentioning.

Peppermill.
Weekends will have 1 table 5-10nl, call ahead as it fills quick...1/2 tables 3-5nl then 4/5 tables 1-2nl, couple times a week 20/40 limit.
All NL games are straddle anywhere up to half your stack so you can up the stakes fairly easily, this also makes the games much bigger than they are especially 5/10

So I guess I'm talking to myself on this thread. Judging by the websites, the SL poker room is open and el do's is closed. Anyone play in it yet?

SL was really nice, not too busy tho, they had 3 tables going while I was there, Peppermill was the place where everyone was really at, played at both places, loved that SL was downtown, nice room but going out a few blocks to Peppermill is definitely worth it.

Where is the room in the casino? Is it across from the sports book where that empty space used to be? Or is it where the old electronic tables used to be?

Accidentally posted this in the main Live Casino thread, for those considering heading to Reno with a group. This was at the ElDo but assume SL will be as accommodating.

End of July I will be 4 days in Reno (silver legacy hotel). Do the games run there 24/7?

Looking for 1/2 & 2/5...

Will probably play at the Peppermill when I make my trip in a couple weeks. In the meantime, I like free money, even piddly amounts. My Google fu is failing on finding places that offer free play on player cars sign up. Any locals have info on places that might have such offers?

I will be visiting friends in Tahoe later in year and I was wondering is there any PLO in Tahoe or Reno? Also are there any limit O8 games that are $8/16 or higher?

Do any of you have recommendations/advice as to what a single, 34 year old male poker player should do during a 10-12 day vacation to the Reno/Tahoe area? Should I stay in one of the locations longer than the other due to how much there is to do in each given spot? Is late October/early November a reasonable time to visit? I would be staying at Harrah's Reno and Harvey's Tahoe during the trip. I appreciate any info.

The WSOP Circuit Event will be at Harvey's late October / early November. That should take up a bunch of time.

Late October/November is the start of winter so expect cold temps and possible snow in Tahoe.
I would just plan on playing poker at peppermill reno unless you play the WSOP at Harveys.

Can anyone comment on the action in the new SL room? The old El Do room was full of drunk droolers. Is the new room much the same?

No.

However, I'd say your experiences and mine are different. I spent the last weekend of July at Eldo, and played extensively at SL.
Daytime action seems slower, just a bit. The usual two 3-6 limit games go, and the 1-2 stud will run from 10am to 5pm.
NL is dicier. Evening games were fine on Saturday, up to four tables that started to thin out after 100am. They had one go overnight, like before at E.D.
The day NL games are a bit shorter stacked.

IMO, the location will hinder the walkby chances of your "drunk droolers" and other somewhat desireable tourist/curiosity players. If this fine room were located a bit closer to the sports book, or one of the corner entrances, they would benefit. (like where Eldo used to be)

The daily MTT at 10am has gone up to $40, and I view this as a positive. The 3-6 game is now really 3-6, instead of the old 1-2 blinds, 2-5-8 on the first street like it used to be. So, its being run more like a standard, normal poker room. Bravo helps.

My thought is, they are probably happy right now with operations, since everything is so shiny and new; which helps the staff on the learning curve of a new room, new software, new rules, et al. I'd hope they start, in a few months, to look for different ways to get players into the room. There are only so many locals there to support it; most that go to Peppermill daily are going to keep going there. I don't set foot in GSR, for my own personal reasons, so I have no idea what their locals footprint is. But, SL will need to look at all potential markets to get more tables running on a consistent basis. The room is set up for, and looks to be optimized for 8-12 tables of cash games. I'm not sure what could help them expand usage/customer base, but the former manager of the Eldo room is still the manager of the SL room. (as is most of the day shift, night shift managers) So, I'm not thinking we are going to see any new wave, avant garde operations here. But at the same time, you need to protect what you have, in business.

Remember that Eldo/SL/CC are in the midst of a massive consolidation and rebranding, abd the move to centralize this poker room in the middle of the the "Club One, Eldo resort" is obviously part of an overall campaign and strategy to give downtown a whole new look. They have a lot of overlap right now that I am sure will be dealt with in an economy of scale assessment. Three hotels, three parking structures, three sets of restaurants, three sports books?, three buildings, three hotel lobbys- you can expect much consolidation in the future. It will be slow, there will be mistakes and redos.

So, in light of all this, how do poker players react? Will they play here, go to Peppermill, or bleed off to GSR, even Atlantis. It should be interesting.

Thanks for your detailed response and insights. Are you thinking they are moving towards one mega resort? I am curious what you mean by "consolidation".

Well, the move to the "Club ONE" players card, from the old system of three players cards for three casinos, owned by one company, would indicate that.

Its apparent that their corporate attitude and direction is pointed in that "one, mega-resort" type of marketing. Their new TV ad campaign also points to that culture.

I used to liken Eldo, SL and CC as using the old, Roger Smith-General Motors style of running his massive company with three divisions, all semi-competing against each other for profits, attention, praise, bonuses...you get the idea. That used to work in a lot of businesses. It doesn't work that well anymore. Reasons are ....numerous, subjective, opinionated, and probably all merited on some level.

If you examine the offerings overlap of the three properties, there are things that can easily be jettisoned, consolidated, re-scaled, etc, etc., in order to cut costs, reduce redundancy and increase profitability. Of course, you need to be careful. How many people are miffed that the Eldo now does not take horse race bets? just sports wagers? Am sure there are a couple- I play horses, not sports. But its all OK, as the poker room is also over at SL.

It will be long, interesting, and fun to watch.
