I am a former poker pro who went and got a real job eventually and haven't played in a few years. Was thinking of playing a bit on the weekends. I live in SE Portland, and Claudia's is closest for me, but Aces Full isn't far. It seems most in this thread talk about the bigger clubs, so I wonder if I should go to one of those, or if I'll find good games at Claudia's and/or Aces Full (and if I should prefer one over the other).

I saw Claudia's website talks about $60 max buy-in which seems like a really small game, but Aces Full's site doesn't list the max buy-in for the "shootouts" (which I prefer over tournaments).

Any suggestions?

I think Claudia's current site lists most of their cash games as $20-$40 buyin. That said, people probably bust and rebuy a lot at that level. I think most of their games are 50¢/$1.

Not sure there's a buyin limit at Aces Full (they recently moved the tables to the bar downstairs). I was playing the cash game regularly there last year but it's changed hands since then. I know they try to get 2/5 going, the capon that has to be a bit higher if any.

Any updates from anyone on when/if Aces Full has been running, and what limits? I know a few players who played in the Tuesday/Thursday 2/5 game a few months back when that was running, and I know they're not playing there anymore. I guess I'd be surprised if anything runs consistently.

As to the poster up above, based on what you said you're probably equidistant to Final Table and The Game up on Barbur for cash games. Both will have at least one cash game going throughout the day. If you're only playing at night, Rialto is probably closest to you. They have a game every day, but it doesn't start rolling until 6:00 or so, but once going will go until close (2:00 am) and get much juicier than the .50/1.00 stakes would indicate.

Has anyone been to the new cardroom in Eugene?

How was the action in their Thursday PLOS game?

If a game is different every day then no one can give you accurate info about that kind of thing.

I don't work for them I see the state of poker in this town and am simply reporting about it so the games keep going. The big O is constantly straddled from what I've seen and deep! Much deeper than 1500 as stated earlier

Anyone with a clue knows what I'm asking. How deep do games get aka how much money is on the table.

Probably looking at a 1 hr drive one way + rush hour. If he wants to shill then give good info otherwise it's not worth the time or the hassle.

I've driven multiple times to clubs/venues. The refuse to say how much money is on the table/ how big the game actually is.. instead using the same bs lingo. Wind up taking a risk, driving over and finding a really ****ty, shallow game with no legs.

It's a great way to piss off/ drive away otherwise loyal customers who would actually help out starting games/ playing short etc.

Okay I'll give you the scoop---biggest stack at any time is 60 so probably just stay home

just stay home.

we don't want you here and we'll be just fine without you.
we owe you nothing, so you might as well quit acting like we do.

There is an article about Portland poker in the recent Card Player magazine, with Jason Mercier on the cover.

You wouldn't get this from reading how serious an inquisition you are looking for. Just call the place a few nights in a row and ask about stack sizes jfc.

No, you're right, it isn't serious at all and there would be no reason to treat it as such

The whole thing started because instead of saying "I have a preference for games like xyz" you said "how are these games" and got pissy when you couldn't tell if they matched your preference.

I am going to have to agree with Finetome here. All of the decent cardrooms in my area are about 1-1.5 hours away from where I live and it is extremely frustrating when you drive that far and the game(s) are terrible or worst of all about to break and you would have stayed home having known what they were like. Any time I try to call in to ask how the games are, the floor will always say it's good to try and get someone to come in.

I know it's a tough spot for you guys. So the onus is on you to ask a detailed question so you can weigh your options. Not just "how deep".

How about "Hey I live pretty far away but don't mind coming to town for the right game. The right game for me is one where the stacks are pretty deep, people don't get pissy if I have some drinks and straddle and the atmosphere is generally a fun one. Not a fan of games with a bunch of wannabe pros trying to grind and playing super short. Anyone know a good place/day of the week for a game I described. Big O preferred but will play NLHE too. Thanks"

Contrast that with finetome's first post

"How deep and how often does the big o game run"

FWIW I have no clue how deep the Game typically runs. Consider that anything above 2/5 rarely runs publicly. These games will attract the biggest recs and the stronger big O players. So on Fri Sat you should expect stacks to be on the deeper side. From what I've observed at 1/2 big O games in other rooms the game doesn't play particularly deep.

If I were you I'd stop by on a Friday and see what it's like. Worst case scenario you have to play a juicy NL game if the Big O isn't deep enough
