15/30+ up to 40/80 limit games that are not Hold'em! Stud, Stud/8, FLO/8, 2-7, Razz.
5/5+ PLO/8
5/5+ Kansas City Lowball
5/5+ PLO would be better then nothing.

I'm not interested in playing No Limit Hold'em (unless it's in a mix) or games under 1/2. With my luck I've only been able to find a combination of the two things I'm trying to avoid :/

Really sad because Bovada just removed Stud and Stud/8 and nobody around here seems to play it.

I was told the Rialto has a mixed game that runs on Monday. The website has no information on what games are in the mix or what stakes? I called them and the guy I spoke with said he was not sure because he does not work Monday's. Has anyone played in that game? Do I just need to create a home game?

Respectfully,
Will
You must have Portland confused with Gardenia circa 1987

I'm pretty sure Rialto's "Monday Mix" is a legit dealer's choice, i.e., any game. They might cut it off at wild card games and ****. I think it's officially 1-2, but it plays much bigger and deeper than that. A lot of the guys who play that also play in a couple of higher stakes home games in town. IMO, your best bet is to go the Monday Mix, don't be an ass, make friends, and get an invite.

I appreciate the advice. Thank you.

Rather than give a tempban to everyone who discussed World Tavern Poker or trolled those people, I'm just going to give a final warning and let everyone know that discussion of those games should go in Home Poker. Anyone who discusses it here going forward will be banned.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation. If you have any comments on this decision, please post in the Moderation Discussion Thread.

I just moved to the Portland area and am curious about the local poker scene. I know the way the clubs work, with the daily fee instead of rake. However I haven't seen any updates about the cash game "tournaments" that some posts mentioned. Did these ever take off? If so where do the run with the most consistency?

Thanks all.
The terminology used to describe Portland's poker scene is misleading. There are variations in how rooms handle the game (at PDX Poker Room, formally Encore, you are only allowed to cash out during five minute breaks which occur every hour), but the games play like cash. You buy in for 40-300 blinds, depending on the room, and you play.

I've only been to two clubs, but PDX Poker Room has cash games running every day, starting at 5:00 PM. Usually 1/2 NLHE, but we started a 2/5 NLHE game last night (Tuesday) after enough players requested the game. By 11:00 PM there was a full table of 2/5 and two full tables of 1/2.

It amazes me how many players at PDX Poker Room talk strategy and complain about the quality of play. Earlier this week there was a good player discussing the definition of value betting, expected value, and, believe it or not, range-merging. Last night a player complained about the player pool because they "call 3bets with 94s" and laughed and shook his head when someone tabled a rivered gutter. Please, for the love of god, STOP.

Noticed that too. Lots of young kids with out of control poker egos who can't wait to lecture people.

It's incredible, for sure. And no doubt it makes the calling stations tighten up, some of the poorest players stop playing, and even a few players decide to try to learn a few things on their own time.

It hurts, for sure. But people suck at learning and misapply pretty much everything.

And the big ego kids can all be exploited, too. Image awareness and manipulation is huge with them, precisely because of their ego.

Spite spend time away from the table examining how to exploit them after paying careful consideration the their lines at the table. Find ways to play for stacks against them when they're deep.

If they are talking strategy and stuff at the table. A) they prolly have no clue what they are saying. Just regurgitated something they heard on TV. B) They are the fish at the table. They don't realize it cuz they all are most likely surrounded by other fish. No real poker player would ever complain about bad players at there table. Let alone talk strategy. Never read a book or watched a video where they say its ok to talk about that stuff. They have maybe at best read half a book. Do they even track there stats? If not they are most likely not winning players. A 1/2 should be no problem for a good player. Yeah, ull have your swings. Thats what a BR is for. What is there BR? Thats another clue to if they even know what there talking about. So IMO these guys r not poker players. They are wannabees. They prolly just give there money back and forth to each other. They r easily exploitable by just playing ABC. Let them get all tricky and act dumb. They'll give up there stack eventually. Blame u for being horrible when they donked there stack off trying to bluff. ABC TAG players will crush these guys in the long run. Guatenteed.

Maybe you guys can clarify something things. I've been in Portland almost two months. Eventually I'm going to start making it out to these rooms.

What's the deal with the add on's at the first break? I've never seen that anywhere before. Does that go to the prize pool or is that some kind of donation to the dealers since they are "volunteer" or whatever?

How is the monthy 35k at Encore/PDX?

Add ons go in the prize pool. Dealers are tipped out by cashing players.

It is/was pretty common in online rebuy tournaments. Gives the impression that if you bust out and want to rebuy you're not paying as much as the full cost of a freezeout style tournament with the same size guarantee, so it encourages rebuys.

Hey folks
I'm going to be in Portland the weekend of July 15. I have the option of staying in Portland or staying in Newberg (which looks to be about 45 minute drive from Spirit Mountain).
I'm not interested in tournaments.
Is there anywhere that typically spreads 1/2 or 5/5 PLO cash games on the weekend? I'm only interested in NLH if it's 2/5+ or possibly deep stack 1/2. Are any of these spread at Spirit Mt. or any of the clubs in town I've read about? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like Encore is the only one closing; rest of clubs are, at least as of today, business as usual, and will appeal. Trying to figure out what the form of decision was.

That does suck if the clubs are all going to shut down, but why couldn't they at least try to keep their games going self-dealt? It worked for many years in California.

Does anyone know more about why this happened? New law passed or new interpretation? I imagine it has something to do with the new poker room at the racetrack, are they shutting down also.

Lot of rumors out there. The guy who owns One Good Hand claims they've never received anything or heard anything about a rule change, and neither have the other clubs. Claudia's is pretty popular outfit, surely known to the City, so if they were sending to clubs it would certainly be on the list. Seems a little far-fetched, but speculation/additional rumor is Encore owner has been looking to close for at least a few months, and is using this as an excuse.

Why? The most cynical of speculation I've heard is a player was one top-3 finish away from winning Encore's 5k challenge. Win 5k if you finish in the top 3 in the noon tournament 7 times w/in any 30 day period. Guy apparently had 6 days left in his 30 day period.
