Hey im currently living in Winnipeg, MB and will be attending some short classes in Montreal for a few months and was looking for any advice for as to where i should be looking to settle while there?

I have been to Montreal a few times but not for longer than a few days, im actually not too familiar with all the different boroughs. I do have a basic understanding of french but would prefer a primarily anglophone/student area if possible since I wont really need to work as it wont be for that long.

So far ive been told the plateau , outremont , rosemont, cote de nieges and ville marie are good to look just wondering if anyone there had any suggestions as far these places are concerned?

OK well Ville Marie is just "downtown" and there is lots of residential downtown - but IMO it takes a little local knowledge to find the right areas. I wouldn't focus too much on that though Old Montreal could be an idea.

I would focus mostly on the Plateau, which is a huge residential and mixed-use area. Tons of students though it is much more expensive that it used to be - it's still easy to find affordable apartments by Toronto or Vancouver standards, not sure about how it would compare with Winnipeg. In the Plateau I would focus first (based on what you've described of your situation) on the area between St-Denis and St-Laurent or Av du Parc, from Sherbrooke st north to Mont-Royal.

A lot of this depends on where your classes will be - can you give more information?

Wait Plateau used to be cheaper? I'm living in the McGill Ghetto but a bunch of my friends from first year moved to the Plateau. They say rent can be as low as 300 a month up there and meanwhile, I'm paying 750 a month (sick pad though).

Plateau is less anglophone than downtown but it's cheaper, some say Europeaner, and compared to the area near McGill campus, much less of a student vibe. If you're attending classes at McGill or Concordia, I'd definitely suggest getting a place in the Ghetto or St. Catherine. Check on craigslist. Students going on exchange for a semester sublet their apartments out more often than not and it's cheaper than paying rent full on.

Back to poker - Playground has a $1000 + $100 deepstack event coming on October 22/23 (two day event) - T30K starting stacks and 45 minute levels. It's starting to look like it could sell out (170 seats). They're running satellites on Sunday nights - $50 unlimited rebuy for the first 4 levels. Two sundays ago they awarded 5 seats - not sure how many were awarded this past Sunday.

(Brag) there was another tag-team tourney on Sunday, my partner and I took down 3rd place from 80 teams. Sick final table bubble took over an hour, maybe 90 minutes even though we took a collection for the bubble and he was extremely short stacked. The problem was one table was relatively short all around so they had trouble dealing with the 9th place guy.

I have also heard from many people that Snakes has very much rallied - both tourneys and cash games are very busy all the time now. I'm definitely planning on going back a bit more often soon.

Oh also the tournament schedule at playground has changed a bit - more freezeout events, fewer rebuy events, plus the "morning" tournaments during the week now start at noon, not 11am.

I'm interested to see if that is still the case now that the BBJ (which was over $120k) finally went out at Snake's. With the CdM BBJ over $200k like it is I would not be surprised to see a serious down-swing in south shore rooms in the short term until it goes out. Once it does, can Snake's maintain the market share they have gained while their BBJ has been so high? Will be interesting to see...

EDIT: And congrats on the strong showing in the tag-team event Mike.

Yeah I'm very curious to see how much the business at Snakes was related to the BBJ - I assume some of it was.

And thanks - that tourney was super fun and my partner and I were making some really good decisions while also winning the (few, luckily) races we found ourselves in.

I assume this was a chance thing, not a paid appearance? Does anyone know?

Is anyone here playing in the big tournament on Oct 22/23? $1000 + $100 deepstack, 45 minute blind levels, 30K starting stack (plus dealer add-on, I presume).

I played in the satellite on Sunday to try and get in ($50 rebuy) and had one of the larger stacks with about 15 left but it dwindled down, and the blinds went up and I busted in 9th I think (4 seats were awarded).

It was kind of an interesting hand I busted on. I'm holding KsQs in middle position. Smaller stack than me shoves with what I am sure is A-rag. I shove behind and am called by AsJs. First shove turns out to have Ad8d, so my read was correct and based on the known information I was actually exactly 40%-40% to win with the AJ. Flop comes down KQJ and I moved WAY into the lead but both are still drawing live to either a chop or an outright win. Of course the 10 comes on the turn so now I'm behind but still alive (but drawing very thin). The river was a blank so I didn't fill up to triple up plus blinds...

Even though my math was correct (-ish - with around 5BB, a true coinflip is awesome) I'm pretty sure I could have nurtured my tiny stack for a few more hands and found a cleaner spot. And given the flat payouts - 1-4 got a seat in the tourney that might have been the smarter move. At the same time, it was an OK spot so I'm OK with it.

Anyhow I have the $ in my poker roll to play on Saturday but I won't - $1K+ on a single tourney isn't a great idea...

Canada Poker has a good, very frank interview with Chris McClung aka doritos who has had some good results in Europe recently. It's actually quite refreshing to see how honest he is about his play at the end of EPT San Remo.

Nice article Mike, thanks for the link. I find it refreshing that even a guy on the up like Chris can still mangle a hand like he did there - makes me feel better about my occasional brain farts at the table.

Uh, if anyone's interested in trying to satellite into The Big One - the million $$ buy-in charity tourney at next year's WSOP - Loto Quebec and the Casinos of Quebec have a huge satellite program running.

Here's a link:

http://tournoipokerlotoquebec.com/en/

Basically there are a whole bunch of ways to satellite into a tourney in May at Lac Leamy, and if you win you get the $1M seat in Las Vegas.

Hey everybody,

My name is Max and im new on 2+2. A member suggested i give it shot so here i am lookin for a grind/study partner(s) !

Been playing fulltime for 2 years online now, and i obv currently live in Montreal.

Was wondering if any of you guys are on the daily grind like me ? Guess it would be nice to get to know you !

I also like to play at the Caisno ( esp when BBJ is INSANE like it was 2 weeks ago or so, sometimes go to PG as well but since i dont own a car it kinda sucks to get there by bus.

Oh and, i just switched to cash games too, i used to strictly play mtts and mt-sngs on FTP before it shut down. Since i had to change software and i didnt know anybody on stars, i decided to give a shot at cash. So yeah, spending alot of time studying/ watching vids / reviewing hands all on my own gets kinda old !

GL at the tables guys

Max

Hey Max gl on the grind. It is a bit of a pain to play live in Mtl without a car, particularly if you enjoy playing tournaments which are so much better in Kahnawake than at the Casino. One thing that some people I know do is to take the Metro to Angringnon and then take a cab. Reduces some of the costs.

Speaking of tournaments, there's a $225 deepstack at Snakes on Sunday that will fill up (100 players) and the next $1100 at Playground is December 12 with satellites starting this Saturday - there's a 30 player $200 tourney at 8pm with 2 seats guaranteed, 1 seat for every $1100 in the prize pool.

That $1100 is December 10 Mike (the Saturday), not Dec 12.

Heh - not any more LOL! I had seen that site a while ago - first a placeholder, then a more fully realized site - but then I went back and it's down. It simply says, "This website has been temporarily disabled. Come back in a few days."

There have been quite a few rumours that the place may never open, though I don't believe those at all. But it's clear there are some hurdles.

From what I've been able to ascertain, it comes down to the license. The KGC states clearly on their website that there will only be three licenses issued at any one time. So: Snakes, Playground, and Four Aces. Four Aces was suspended, and what I heard through the grapevine was that Stardust was going to take it over in some way. In the last two weeks, there was a notice on the KGC website that the Four Aces license has been reinstated pending certain changes that were requested to the operation.

This may seem to indicate that Four Aces will somehow be re-opening, but I don't think so - if Stardust is indeed taking over their license then the reinstatement would be a necessary step to make that happen. If, however there is someone new in the picture at Four Aces (again, I highly doubt this) then Stardust would be up in the air.

Anyhow long story short I think this is all going to work itself out shortly - hopefully in December at the latest.

In other news - the $78K BBJ was hit tonight at Playground - TJ against 22 with the board 2T2TT, quads over quads.

How strange it went down. I checkout out the building they are opening up in they did so many renovations. It's be terrible if that all went to waste. I feel like all the other rooms are dying anyway other than playground. I just saw the pictures on face book. Damn I was about to go last night but didn't stayed for the casino BBJ.

Also some dude won the TV in the spin the wheel promo, which is a neat promo that I like. Wish the casino would do more things like that.

Anybody planning to attend the Legends Banquet and bounty tourney at Playground December 4th?
Montreal Quote
11-25-2011 , 02:27 PM
I'm not particularly interested in the banquet but the tourney following should be fun. I'm a big fan of bounty tournaments, and a big fan of any tournament that could, in theory, be softer than average LOL.

I am very optimistic about winning a seat to the next $1100 tournament on Dec 10.

It would be even better (for better players than me, anyhow) if PG started submitting results to the Hendon Mob DB and announcing them in the MTTc-Live forum here. Even though it would run the risk of strengthening the fields considerably, I know there are a lot of high-profile online pros that have relocated to TO that might be interested in a relatively big tournament in driving distance...
